Here is 20th or so attempt to play a thaumaturgist. One of them made it to the void and died instantly after descending a stair directly into a pit. So I made this one strong instead going with a hermit.
It proved to be the strongest char I ever had.
I rarely quaffed a !of healing. Maybe 3 total. The angband quest vaults were ridiculously easy. I got a nice light-area thaumspell. With proper use of terrain and terrainshaping using wallblastthaumspells. The standing at some corners to stay out of LoS I always get 2 spells to cast at the monster before it gets LoS. My nice speed helps, too. Well, I am waiting for the last quest to finally allocate some of my spellpoints. This time I want to make sure I get Spellbinder to avoid instadeaths.
Seems I can only play characters with rather high HPs.
Missed some god-quests because I got to charlevel 25 before getting light-resistance. :-/
Any news about the (former?) bug concerning the MageStaff of Eternity?

I.e. an nice randart magestaff or Boots of Speed/Elvenkind.

Melkor hit me once to an abomination, which reminded me to give serious thought into strategy. I decided to create jumpgates, walls and used my Area-Shards spell to bring him down. It took me like 30 casts to take his stars down. He didn't hit me more than two or three times. The middle game with full quests was the most challenging in terms not to get overconfident. In the Void and Nether Realms I was really only looking for stairs nothing else.
Arveduis Resurrection now took revenge for the atrocities suffered in the cold realms of Melkor.
