I've been absurdly lucky with mutations; initial mutation was polymorph self, which I don't use, but level 2 was an extra pair of legs (speed +3). Got my patron at cl15 or 16, and shortly thereafter when to the anti-magic cave to try and gain a level or two. Ran into a troll pit and was level 27 when it was cleared (26->27 was actually a gift from my patron). Got telepathy as my gift for clvl30. Right after that, running from Gachapin on dlvl34, I read recall, phase door, and went to quaff a potion of healing. Typo, quaffed an un-ID'd potion of polymorph and got the +4 CON mutation, which raised my HP from ~370 to 446.

I've never seen 'attract dragons' before, and it's only activated a few times since I got it, but I'm guessing it could really suck once I'm deeper and an AMHD shows up at the wrong time.

Got an absurdly easy Vault quest; everything more or less stayed on its side of the level, only summoner was a Quylthulg, etc. But I also got nothing but Sting out of it. So it goes.

Anyhow, my equipment is now very out of sync with my level/stats, but otherwise this character's doing pretty well so far.

The RNG really loves me this game: two nice equipment boosts right after each other. Grendel dropped Metal Scale Mail of the Sprite, and on the same level I picked up a third scroll of Acquirement. I'd used the first two in the Dark Cave and got nothing of note, so I crossed my fingers and tried R'lyeh. Got a Ring of Speed +9.

All I need now is a source of poison resistance and better melee damage (my current 102/round is pretty paltry), maybe a better bow, and I'll do Cloning Pits.

As a side note, I had a Great Wyrm of Space and Time pet for a few turns. Posted a screenshot just for the sake of it.

That is some darn fine armor, certainly end-game quality.

I'm rather intrigued because its name and attributes are vaguely reminscient of an item one of my characters found a long while back: the Amulet of Brilliance of the Fairy, a randart with some claim to being the best ever found randart in Hengband (a couple of weapons have been made with scrolls of artifact creation that are almost certainly better, but they weren't found). Plus, not too many randart amulets floating around.

Got impatient and did Cloning Pits without poison resistance, but since I had a stack of 8 potions of resistance it wasn't much trouble. Used 2 potions of healing, 4(?) potions of resistance, 2 potions of speed, and emptied a staff of teleport. I think I had a few destroyed potions of healing, too, cuz I could've sworn I had more than that when I went in... Most annoying issue was Father Dagon draining my wisdom to 15, which really killed my saving throw. And I only had about 200 fire ants to kill (compared to 350 on my last character).

Didn't get anything too spectacular, but Cambeleg finally lets me get rid of my Set of Leather Gloves [1, +6]. About time. And with the boots reward my base speed is up to +20, melee damage at 225, etc.

I also just noticed that I'm playing with preserve off -- I've missed the Phial, Thranduil, Hammerhand and a handful of low level weapons. Nothing bad yet, but I still haven't found any sources *Destruction* or Teleport Other, so the gigantic vaults in this game are gonna ruin me soon...

Is it worth the effort of training my sling/bow skills? I've got expert in Short Bow, since that's the only thing I've used the whole game. I'm gonna have to waste some time collecting more Healing potions and such anyhow, so I guess I'll do it.

I write too much here.

Finally found a potion of self knowledge at the BM, my life rating is only 95/100, and my stat maxes are all wrong (INT and CHR are the highest...). But potions of new life cure all mutations, no? I might just live with what I've got, I like guaranteed telepathy, speed +3 and my patron too much.

Went in to do Killing Fields and attracted a Great Bile Wyrm, which dropped Brand's crossbow. Raised my speed to +30, so I did Haunted House and Old Castle. Both were very easy. Got the Terror Mask in Old Castle, which leaves me without resistance to electricity, but gives me poison resistance for the first time, and I'd rather have that. Also picked up another scroll of Acquirement, I'll have to go read it later.

Moved on and did more of the Arena, got the scroll of *Acquirement*. I guess I'll save that for the point where I can actually dive a little bit in R'lyeh. The fights were remarkably easy, but I researched the next guy and I definitely can't beat him.

Time to finally get around to doing the level 38 quest in Angband, I've been avoiding it for a while.

Finished all the quests I've played before, so after this I'm not really sure what is required before I go into a quest. I'll have to look at other dumps.

Pretty good kit at this point, still have the electricity hole, but with my mutation to resist elements it should be manageable. I've cleared the hurdles I ran into on my previous two characters (sorcerers, which I think is what has caused me to play a lot more cautiously this game), so it's time to start diving faster.

Found another scroll of Acquirement, this will be my fifth. Or, my third, if you don't count the two that you're more or less guaranteed to get. Are they supposed to be this common?

Attract dragons is starting to summon a lot of Wyrms, which makes me nervous, but it hasn't proven too difficult yet. Though if I get a lightning breathing wyrm at the wrong time, I'm gonna be screwed.

Spent a while gaining easy levels in the Dragon's Lair, until about clvl43 or so, and by that point I'd accumulated 5 scrolls of Acquirement. So I took them, along with a Summon Pet scroll from the wanted uniques thing, a capture ball, and the *Acquirement* from the Arena, to R'lyeh. Summon pet got me a warp demon -- maybe it'll come in handy later. *Acquirement* got me Earendil, and one of the Acquirement scrolls got me the Jewel of Judgement (I _love_ clairvoyance, since I no longer have to cart around potions of enlightenment for when I get special levels). The rest were just books and mediocre ego items, but all in all I got very lucky again.

Ended up with some more mutations, the only important ones being Illumination at level 44 (I do consider this important; it frees an inventory slot that I normally have for rods of illumination, and it's only 2hp to use it), and then Resist Magic at level 46. Good stuff.

Anyhow, I started spending some time in R'lyeh after picking up the two artifacts and finally have all of my resists covered (not to mention an unhasted speed of +35). Mainly just "half-stair-scumming" level 80: I'd explore a little bit, find a huge pack of nasties, let a few follow me (a Behemoth was worth 40k xp, which seemed unbalanced -- he didn't manage to hit me at all...), eventually scout for a killable unique, then scum on the surface to get a new level. All of the uniques currently on my top 10 list, excluding Daoloth who was my level 50 quest, were killed in R'lyeh.

I'm _still_ using Sting, and I highly doubt it's the best weapon I could be using right now, but I just never got around to checking out my other weapons. With my crossbow and seeker bolts (+9, +9), my damage is 196/470, which has so far been enough to kill just about everything before it comes near me. I keep trying to use the Fire Branding activation, but it fails every time.

Eventually I need to get around to going back into Angband, but levels are so quick and easy elsewhere that it seems like a pain in the ass. I'm also unsure about the quests I have left; Spawning Pits was very easy, but I got nothing worthwhile from it -- even the reward at this point is worthless. Are the rewards from the higher level quests really worth the effort/risk of dying?

Very rough time on the level 62 quest for Fiona. She was pretty easy, really, only summoned twice and both times it was just a big group of deep ones. I wanted to melee her to minimize the problems from summons getting in the way of arrows, but I had no idea about Zantetsuken's "I can't attack women," um, feature. So I ended up firing bolts at her while standing right next to her, which was just as good - I do more damage that way anyhow. But I didn't realize she was an Amberite -- when she died, she summoned Ungoliant and Bleys, both right next to me. Teleported away, and Bleys either followed me or had a lot of luck teleporting/being teleported, as he was in the same room that I landed in. He wasn't that tough to beat either, but I was running low on Seeker bolts. He dies, I'm drained again, prolly got some more equipment cursed and he summons Brand. I have to scamper around and pick up my bolts, get Psycho-Speared a few times, use my second *Healing* potion for the level, and then kill him off. Another Amberite. I should start actually reading monster descriptions that I keep an extra term open to display... Anyhow, this summoned Sleipnir, or he was already on the level (he was "summoned" on the other side of the room, and I've never seen that happen before, but admittedly it was a small room and pretty packed at this point). Easy enough to kill off. I left the loot for later, picked up my bolts, rested a bit, and killed Ungoliant, who was remarkably easy. All said and done, my rewards for the level? Sleipnir's corpse, the club 'Spoils of Victory', and yet another scroll of Acquirement. I spent tons more trying to get through the level. Super.

Dropped off everything at home and dove to dlevel 65, where Fundin Bluecloak is. He's friendly, but wanted, so I've gotta kill him. His first move consists of summoning a lot of nasties around me, namely Dworkin and a giant pack of Chaos Hounds. I melee Fundin, pick up his corpse, and the very next thing to happen is everything around me being destroyed. This is a very lucky character. Dworkin was tough, I think he summoned a Solar, or maybe Fundin had, and they kept summoning more of themselves, so I went through a _whole_ lot of Healing trying to finish off Dworkin. Dropped some mediocre amulet, which I grabbed and then got the hell out of there.

Getting much tougher. Definitely not looking forward to dlevel 76. Also, just noticed that one of my wanted uniques is Eric, so I've gotta at least do that quest still.

Level 71 had a lot of uniques on it, spread across two trips: Caine, Atlas, and Kenshirou, each in a different room of those 2x2 room groups. They weren't much trouble, but I picked my order badly and when I killed Caine, it woke up Atlas. Still, no particular problems.

Next trip down I see Ancalagon, who summoned Narse and Eibra, along with about eight billion wyrms. Had to teleport a lot and get a group of just one or two wyrms to fight me, but at some point, something else killed Eibra, and Ancalagon was extremely low on health by the time I got back to him -- died in one hit. I searched but couldn't figure out what did it; I guess the wyrms did?

Anyhow, picked up some minor artifacts, but also another ring of extra shots. Looking for a way to wear it, I noticed I could've been wearing my other for ages now; I'd been wearing a ring of resist nether for no reason whatsoever. So, switch to Belthronding and wear one of them, my damage output is 169/1014 with seeker arrows. I think the current dump shows me wearing both, with 169/1183 damage, but +16 speed which isn't an option.

I think I'll try the GWoP soon. Losing Brand's xbow drops me to +25 speed, but with a little luck, which this character seems to have a lot of, maybe I can manage to kill the bloody thing... Probably gonna wait for a way to have reflection, though.

Any tips from people who've actually fought him before?

Just killed the Babble. 99% sure it was pure chance, as I _really_ screwed up. I wasn't paying attention and was firing my normal arrows at him, instead of seekers. But he failed casting spells three times, and the rest were mana bolts and one raw Logrus -- no Psycho-Spears, which I'm guessing are the really evil attack, based on what some uniques have hit me with. It is now official: the RNG is going to eat my children alive on future characters.

I also picked up a Diamond Edge from the Tarrasque on my level 76 quest, so I'm guessing that's what I should use the scroll on. I'll have to look at some other people's characters and see what they did with it.

Posted a screenshot of it to make a friend of mine jealous.

Trying to dive pretty quickly now and pick up the final 5 wanted unique corpses, but I'm constantly running into a lot of other uniques and losing a lot of healing sources. I'd avoid them, but I'd really like to get my hands on Feanor's.

I'm hoping Eric the Usurper will show up outside of his quest. I looked at the edit file describing it and it looks pretty tough (multiple lords of chaos that I can't *destruct* or teleport far far away, which is my normal method of dealing with them). If I still haven't seen him by the time I hit dlvl 98, I'll just try the quest and fail it if I have to. (I _should_ be able to beat it, but I'm trying to conserve the rest of my !Healing/*Healing*)

Still hanging on to my artifact creation scroll, just in case I find something better than the diamond edge to use it on, but I doubt it'll happen. I'll read it on dlvl 98 -- though I looked at the artifact generation code, and strangely, depth doesn't seem to be applied anywhere. If anyone knows the code, am I just missing something?

Spent a lot of time scumming the dragon's lair to build my supplies back up, since every trip into Angband was causing me to use more than I managed to gather. I was mainly concerned with Genocide and more arrows, but luckily found a fair amount of *Healing*, and after a while managed to put together a decent sized stack of 70 Seekers Arrows of Hurt Evil (+10, +10). Already used a lot of them fighting Morgoth, but the remaining 48 should be helpful against the Serpent.

Made one trip to dlvl 100 and quickly realized the Serpent is a lot bloody harder than I expected. Got to the stairs and now I've been playing on lvl 99.

The Unicorn was pretty easy, it didn't summon any uniques, and was able to phase door in corridors and kill it pretty quickly. Morgoth was only a lot tougher, as he summoned the Nazgul, Bahamut, and some Balrog, but I got rid of the Nazgul with *Destruction*, and was able to teleport away and fight just Morgoth. On the same trip, I found two of the rings of power, Nenya and Vilya, but I'm not going to wear Vilya since I'd rather have my ring of extra shots (an extra 200hp/round or so, which is probably worth losing the electricity immunity).

Next trip is back to level 100. Hopefully I'm right about having dispatched the most dangerous uniques...

Yay for my first winner. I'd go on to try and fight the Chemist, but I ran myself completely out of supplies while I was fighting the Serpent (or really, when I was trying to fight off all of the crap he summoned). Used a lot more resources than I had expected to: 14 Healing potions, 7 *Healing*, 8 scrolls of Genocide, 9 scrolls of Mass Genocide, and ran through 3 stacks of 99 seeker arrows (+10, +10), and my stack of 48 seeker arrows of hurt evil.

All in all, archers seem to be a pretty easy class, but this character got so bloody lucky throughout the game that my perspective is probably pretty skewed.

On 26.4.2006 16:00 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Congradulations! A well earned victory.

Archer was the class of my first Hengband winner way back when, and IMO, its an underappreciated class.

What really makes the archer shine is its relative safety from monster double-moves. When a melee character gets 6 attacks per round, he throws them all at once, and then waits until relative speeds and the RNG say he gets to go again (same with spellcasters). If the monster is faster, or even if some bad luck comes along, the monster could get a double or even a triple move, and its moments like that where characters tend to die (double mana-storms are pretty hard to survive, for example).

Archers are different (well, really, ranged attacks are different, but Archers are the class most affected by the difference). Rather than getting 4 or 5 or whatever arrow shots at once and then waiting, each arrow shot splits up the Archer's turn. For example, if you get 5 shots/round, each arrow shot takes 1/5 of your "energy" (which is how moves are calculated).

Ever notice that sometimes you'd get 6 shots in a row before a monster got another move, but sometimes 4 and sometimes 7? That's because of the random factor in speed comparisons. If you were a melee character, you'd be inflicting or receving double moves on some of those occasions. Instead, you just get more or less shots between monster moves. Non-missle attack actions still take full time, but the increased granularity in you choice of when to move means that if a monster mana storms you (of hand of doom or summons uniques or whatever), the archer can almost always teleport away or heal before the monster can follow up the move, a follow-up that could have been a character-killing double move on almost anyone else.
