Yes, i'm crazy. Its a dark elf pure spellcaster with no melee ability whatsoever. But i totally owned Wormtongue the first time i saw him with Wonder and a wand of lightning bolts i had picked up on the level. (I'd already seen all the cursed wands so i tried it out on him).

This character has also found a ridiculous amount a MM wands (~9, some of which were sold with 0 charges to afford to recharge the rest). I approve. It really helped kill a bunch of orcs for massive xp boosting.

Not going to bother to update the dump yet, but i'm down on level 12 and about to dive some more. Just killed Lagduf - managed to get him separated from his retinue, finished off his retinue, rested, and than toasted him. Wonder is *so* good some of the time, and completely reamful other times.

For instance DL10 (featuring both Brodda and Bullroarer) where i had Brodda down to 2 stars and then wonder healed him to full. Twice. ug. Eventually i wondered him to confuse him and then machinegunned him to death with MM wand.

Bullroarer was easier - got him across from me in a large room. Wonder didn't screw me and he went down in 2 castings.

The Scimitar of Slay Orc dropped by Wormtongue has been useful (+11, +5) because it means i can actually engage in a little melee, especially with orcses. Because my mana pool is relatively small compared to the number of orcs i'm seeing.

About to drop down to DL23. No free action or see invis yet (sigh). Pasted the two hill orcs at some point (why is golfimbul resistant to lightning, nether, darkness, and plasma?), and both yeeks. Ulfast went down to wand of lightning bolts and sonic burst (i love that spell). Dropped Mail Gauntlets of "Free Action" that were secretly fumbling and bumbling. As the only ego armor i've seen all game, that's really annoying - the hidden cursed items are far too common, and shouldnt be allowed to appear before DL ~40 to let characters actually have a chance at finding equipment.

That made me leave a 'special' level too, which i presume means player ghost.

Prediction: This character is going to die to paralyzation, because free action is not forthcoming (or when it does its actually cursed).

Sangahyando went down after a long fight and dropped nothing even remotely interesting.

Recalled, restocked, came back to DL29 - sense 2 presences. Bolg and Azog were virtually next to each other. Thank you high stealth - i got to fight them one at a time. Both of them took quite a bit of blasting to bring down - and there was a scary moment vs Azog when my haste wore off and i was getting repeatedly doublemoved. Blinked and pulverized him as he was running towards me. Those fights left my charged items fairly drained, it was time to head for town again. Both were made easier by an unIDed !intelligence that i quaffed which raised my int by 3 and increased my mana 50%.

Smeagol was also on that level, meh.

I'd go down to at least 32, but I keep getting great DL 29s - Oh well, i'm finding some statgain potions, so its ok.

I've passed (depth-wise) about 6 uniques so far which may or may not show up and i won't care. Morgoth summoning orcs or smeagol would entertain me.

On 13.4.2006 14:52 jmiddendorf@hmc.edu wrote:
The really obvious solution to the hidden curses would be to prevent unique drops from containing it -- as is, it's a flat 1 in 10 chance, I think.

There's no harm in passing over uniques -- but they won't get summoned. The shallowest unique I've ever seen summoned is Draebor. who's native to dlevel 35.

Personally, I'd've started this character with a 17 (base) int -- with devices and spells as the main offense, str seems far less useful. Sure, there's carrying stuff, but somehow fail rates and mana seem more important to me.

I routinely drop below dlevel20 (1000') without free action -- most of the really nasty paralyzers are deeper in Sang. Of course, slowing and spellcasters with paralyze are anonying, but rarely lethal, in my experience.

On 13.4.2006 17:02 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
All my skills at or above 50%. Yeah, i'm not diving very fast, i'm still at stat gain and not seeing all that many potions - considering diving again.

Most recent unique kill was Ibun. He resists fire and cold, which is really obnoxious because thats the two elements sorcery gets in abundance (at least early on - i've not had a character find Raal's or the grimoire who can browse them). Unfortunately for him, he does not resist darkness balls or gravity. Thanks wonder.

Found _11_ Throwing Axes of Westernesse - almost made me wish i was a thrower. Regardless, that was a substantial boost of cash that got immediately invested in the bookstore. (I kept one for the +2 physical, free action and see invis on a slot i'm not otherwise going to use much). I'm ready for at least 1 dungeon book at this point.

Guess its diving time, statgain be damned. But i really wanted some more int. No, really.

Just post clearing a giant pit in a 'wonder'ful way. Giants drops lots of goodies, including staves/wands, for recharging my mana. Yay giants.

Got a few of uniques, including the sword forged by Eol (i'm wielding it, duh). The gauntlets are useless to me, as is bloodspike, but i've no real reason to sell them...

Got my first !oCon this level - good thing too, i was getting worried about running into something that would kill me by breathing on me *despite* resisting it.

I'm amused that i have as much mana as hp. Yay mana.

On 14.4.2006 09:57 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
I need to dive faster. But i'm still missing RConf despite random crafting, which is annoying. And i keep getting 'You sense a powerful object' feelings.

But thank you trap of summoning for conjuring up Bert, who was kind enough to invite Bill and Tom. I enjoyed mopping up all three of you at once.

Instakilled my Walden. Entirely predictable, but i thought getting up to almost 400hp would probably be enough to face elemental lords. Wrong.

It seems he did plenty of attacks in a single round. How come?

Thats one spell actually. It just has multiple sources of damage.

On 15.4.2006 19:26 jmiddendorf@hmc.edu wrote:
Yes, that was all one spell -- you take around 110 damage (no resistance), around 220/3 damage lightning (with resistance), and 220/4/3 cold (with resistance), and 220/4/3 acid (with resistance), for a total of 220, even if you resist, assuming you get unlucky and everything happens. Assuming everything does what it's supposed to. Also, lack of a "You are struck by lightning!" message indicates that the lightning bit should only be 220/4/3, instead of 220/3, for a total of 165.

Were you at full hp? Also, had you cast elemental protection -- I consider that very important once it becomes available.

On 17.4.2006 16:42 naj wrote:
I actually had totally forgotten he could deal cold damage. (Elemental Protection only covering cold and fire), and so no i hadnt.

I was at 226 before he cast that spell, which i thought would be enough to survive any one thing he did. (I was fast +10 from haste self, and extra dodgy from Evasion). (I had considered healing again, but i'd done nothing that combat except heal up to that point).
