Early start ... My first go at a Red Mage. They look promising, as 5% Healing, Haste Self, and Dimension Door are all available at upper levels. Plenty of detection, and plenty of offensive spells. Plus decent fighting. Also, double resistance to any element.

We'll see how it goes ... A long battle with Smeagol netted me this chaotic war hammer, and that's a good start.

Oh, and Satisfy Hunger is very nice for vampires ... no need to worry about starving while crossing the wilderness, or doing some undead quest.

I've noticed that spells are priced higher than the spoiler sight lists ... good thing I did do a quick test char to confirm the 5% fail rates before launching this guy!

Killed the orc and got lame armor. Killed Wormtongue and got more lame armor. However, Hobbes came thru for me with a vampiric weapon! There were some undead masses on the quest level as well, so I fought those until I stopped gaining XP ...

One really annoying thing for me was just that I had to lug around *so* many damn books, and despite my trying to have RFire up at all times, sometimes they still got destroyed.

And *gasp!* Blackreaver, playing a character with only 15 base CON! I thought that was your favorite stat!?

Yes, I'm regretting my low CON as we speak. But fear not, as I have broken thru the DL24 barrier (stupid Alberich ... better than Gachapin in that the quest was actually doable, but very annoying!) and am now heading to Stat depth. With detect objects and small levels, perhaps I might find a potion or two?

Thank goodness for my trusty staves of speed ;-)

!oXP are nice, but not much more than that. Finding one early can speed things up, but that's not very often. And later on they can get more common (too common maybe?) but at those depths you're likely to have maxxed or nearly maxxed your level already.

I hope you get this char somewhere, I tried a few red mages too but I never got them past stat gain either, so I second dzhang's first comment here that it will get tough. On the other hand, I too may be too impatient to get deeper =].

At 140,000xp, I figured I'd just drink them now rather than waiting for 200,000xp (net loss of 30,000xp). From CL29 to CL33 in the blink of an eye :-)

Hours at stat depth have yielded ... !Str and !Wis. About 1 potion every 1.5 hours of play, as expected. Just bought a !Dex though, and that finally yields my 5th and final attack. That and an Amulet of the Magi have put me in a good mood!

Still, more Con required before the Cloning Pits, so I envision about 5 more hours of working my current depth.

All but done :-) Just the MasterQ to dispatch. Firepower was essential, as was a few well placed Dimension Doors. I saw the sleeping GWoL and Grand Master Mystic together on the right side, so I cleared the left side, shooting the Q's. Once I had a "safety zone", things were easier. The mystic was up and summoning good hounds, as expected. I could not shoot him, so I dimension doored around the corner and let him come to me. More than a hundred hounds to mop up though. Shoot them, breathe shards at them, etc. Wish I had brought my Mana Burst ;-)

Lord of Change, Greater Balrog, Great Unclean One, GWoL summoned GWoL so I had to fight both at once, Demilich, Archilich, etc.

It is indeed a tough quest, and not quite finished ;-)

Quest complete! MasterQ summoned some whimpy monsters and a GWoBalance. I carved through a clear centiped so I could get next to the Master, and then sliced it up ... It could summon no more. The GWoBalance could breathe, but not summon, so it was not too difficult.

Quest is tough, but I was +37 speed hasted, and could shoot for 350 or so damage a round. Dimension Door, Healing, Double Resistance, Telepathy all played a crucial role.

Here is the result ... +37 base speed with all resistances save blindness. This last is important, so I guess I'll carry Buckland along should the need arise.

Posing with Heroism, Bless and Berserk. In practice, I almost never use Berserk ...

Wow! Nice work on the Spawning Pits! But I'm unclear on exactly how you killed the Qs. Did you Dimension Door next to them and melee? Belthronding plus those seeker arrows of slaying? Just let them pile monsters up around you until they couldn't summon or teleport away? Inquiring minds want to know. I haven't even been into that quest since my archer and he fled screaming.

On 18.9.2005 21:20 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
Q's died exclusively to missles. No dimension door required, just shoot them in preference to anything else, and only try to have 1 in range at any given time. The quest is wide open, so often I could step gingerly until just one was targetable (If you can't target them then they can't summon) at which point I would shoot it. Most of the Q's died to 1 missle, but some of the tough ones took 3 or 4. My speed meant that summons were rare, and they usually either died or blinked only to die later (Not to say they didn't summon at all ... I listed some of the nasties above).

Speed is key, and +37 was plenty!

Oh, I meleed the Master Q (does he even teleport?) since he was summoning like crazy and it was my only hope ;-)

Probably the last post for the week ... not much has changed other than I wore Aglarang for all of about 5 minutes before switching back to Ringil. Give me Dor-Lomin and I might reconsider. Better Ring of Speed, too.

I'm using the Autoscummer to flush uniques out of their hiding holes, but its making for some very interesting levels.

First potion netted an 18/130 intrinsic, but of course, the required potions of Con have been showing up at about the rate of 1 every 10 hours of play or so. So my equipment remains stuck in place, and I lost some Int to boot.

Of course life rating remains a hefty 117%. I wonder why that is? Certainly can't be luck ;-)

The quest for the +3 attacks ring goes on. In the meantime, I'll settle for the second +2 ring I found, as it also has +4 to damage.
