Chlvl 19 - Angband 18

Insanely early post because the 2nd light source I checked with this ninja turned out to be a Torch of Darkness. Sting will be usable straight away when I get it.

I gave up on the Berserkers. Every time I made "the" mistake - they died.

Ninjas were the first characters I tried in Hengband and two of them were going alright until housekeepin accidents on my pc saw them expire outside of the confines of the game. I've gone back to my roots in an attempt to win this damn game...

:-)

Chlvl 23 - Logrus Master Quest completed

Just did the Logus Master Quest and what did he drop? Faenorian Lamp of Darkness - woohoo. Torch of Darkness now stored at home as a spare.

(Defender) Dagger is proving quite useful at the moment. Time to sneak in to the Vault and pick up Sting. I'm only going this early coz I am a ninja and that's what they do.

Chlvl 26 - Sting obtained.

Not updating dump here yet but just to let everyone know that the vault went ok (Grendel was there but didn't prove too much of a problem after hittting with 7 charges from Wand of Draining. Hairiest moment was when a stupid Lightning ball woke up an Elven Lord and Bone Dragon but Grimblade managed them both whilst quaffing a few CCW's.

Could've really sucked though because one of the chambers contained Mother Hydra and lots of Deep ones which may've been very protacted... Luckily Sting was in the room where I took care of the Bone Dragon so it wasn't an issue. Grendel was keeping Mother Hydra company along withhis retinue of Ogres and I was going to leave him alone but he stupidly decided to check on the noise he heard in the next room and paid for it with his life.

At this stage I'm just training up Sting by single wielding it. I paid a visit to level 60 of the Dragon Caves (killed Ancient White / Great Chrystal Drake + some Mature and Young Dragons) to get to chlvl 26 but the exercise cost me both potions of Healing and I now realise that a double move from the Chrystal Drake could've been fatal if he breathed both times.

Have now moved Grimblade back to Angband and will probably dive to @lvl 35 and stay there for a while until I feel ready for the Cloning Pits (probably not till chlvl 35 or so).

Who am I kidding - I'll probably get impatient and atttempt the cloning pits around ch lvl 30 if I pick up res Nether/Nexus. Being a Titan Ninja at least means I have Chaos and Poison covered.

Upwards and onwards.

Ok - I admit it I'm impatient.

I just purchased a Ring of Nether Resistance from the BM and with my current eq I have 558 hps and most resistances (esp Chaos/Poison) covered. I don't do alot of raw damage but I'm counting on Ninja criticals and evasion to get through a long and tedious slog.

I'm taking the following the ring of Sus Str for the inevitable swarm of Fire Ants...

I have the ring of Nether and Nexus resistance for whatever might be summoned.

I'm wielding the Defender dagger for the levitation but will swap in the Vampiric one for fighting.

I think Kwarimi ability is going to get a real workout.

I'm taking 10 *Identify* scrolls so I'll know exaclty what the relevant artifacts that I find will do so I can use them if required.

Hopefully with 3 Healing / 51 CCW / and Vampiric Dagger I should have enough healing + Kwarimi should be enought.

Let's see what happens (I know it's pure folly)...

I don't have any Res Dark so I Jack of Shadows get's generated I'm screwed - oh well...

Chlvl 31 - Cloning Pits complete:

I haven't updated his dump because I'm at work at the moment but thought I'd provide details re Cloning Pits quest.

First off - the Artifacts he reaped were really worth the effort - NOT!!!

He found 3:
1. Narsil - (What the hell would you use this for?)

2. Arvdui (Not bad Armour - but too heavy for a Ninja

and last but not least

3. Rhino Armour - Dasai (Great boost to AC +64 but it aggravates so it's unusable as well).

I did also get some basic Black Clothes (Stealth +4) and I guess they might be a candidate for Artifact Creation later...

As it turns out Thror are better better boots for Grimblade at the moment as wearing Shiva loses me 70hps/res Blind and nets me +1speed/res nexus/Levitation. I've stored them at home. This is the first time ever that I've completed the Cloning Pits and won't be using any items gained from it.

Tactically I tried something different and went for the Ant Queens first in a quest to stop the inevitable tide of Fire Ants but this didnt work out. One woke up before I stepped into their little Alcove and it was Ant Central pretty quickly. I killed one of them (thank God for Chain Hook/Swap position/Hide in Flame) and then left the other two for later.

As it was there weren't too many problems - I mopped up the Clones and left the Gachapins and two remaining Ant Queens for last. The second Gachapin summoned Hydras twice but Ninja abilities + Vampiric Dagger (Chain Hook / Swap Position / Kwarimi occasionally & Hide in Flame) proved more than enough without ever feeling in real danger. I was a bit impatient tactically and used my 3 healing and 2 *Healing* potions where I probably could've used Kwarim/teleport etc i to save them but I just wanted to get through it as quickly as possible.

Not sure If this quest can ever be completed without having to wade through a stack of stupid Fire Ants - If anyone has a suggestion I'd be happy to hear it...

Not sure where to go to next - Probably Dragon Caves to try and get some decent gear.

chlvl 34 - Dragon's Lair 60

Not updating dump as I'm at work but thought would update comments.

Been hanging out in the top level of Dragon's Lair just levelling up and seeing what items drop etc. Everything going pretty smoothly. Hide in Mud and Hide in Mist are pretty cool ablities (Hide in Muds res to Acid and walk in walls is great actually).

Am training up poison needle when the opportunity present's itself as down the track I'm thinking of wielding it in the Arena for the requisit toughies (GWOP and Babble and maybe some other).

Oh forgot to mention that on second trip to Dragon's Lair a Doom Drake dropped a Katana 10d5 - I id'd it back in town and it was Murumasa - sigh where was this when I was running one of my umpteen Samurais who all died @lvl 30..... Anyway I activated it twice for 2 pts of Strength gain before it blasted itself. Shattered remains now in museum. I can see how it would be a handy weapon for a Samurai (or warrior type) to keep in his back pocket for tough uniques but for a Ninja it's kinda useless.

I've never done the Old Castle Quest - Can anyone tell me whether a lvl 34/35 Ninja dual wiedling Vampiric Dagger and Sting with a Poison Needle in his backpack would be able to do it? Poison Needle is only at Beginner skill level at the moment but I am going to train it up for the next couple of levels. I guess a ring of extra attacks would make it much more effective.

We'll see what happens.

Chlvl 34 - Dragon's Lair 60 (updated Dump)

Well things are going ok.

Decided to test poison needle on Greater Titan and the results are in the screenshots above. After that knocked off a Great Bile Wyrm the same way and it seems that that was enough to take my skill with the poison needle from Beginner to Skilled in the space of two opponents.

Neither of them dropped anything too earth shattering but I'm beginning to think that I will be carrying the needle around for lots of non-unique opponents :-) - on the downside I've found a Ring of Extra Attacks (+1) and worked out that it doesn't affect the needle - oh well - still worth using I think.

Hide in Mud was instumental for both of them of course.

I think I'll stick it out in the Dragon's Lair a while longer as the needle will probably make levelling a bit quicker now.

chlvl 35 - Spawning Pits Quest

DEAD.

I'm at work at the moment but I'll update his dump tonight. sigh.

Never done this quest (or Killing Fields) before. Killing fields was a picnic for a ninja. Spawning pits however was a different kettle of fish (in this case it was a big kettle of Dragons/Undead/Demons).

Fiona was there (but she stayed asleep the whole time).

I knew when I first stepped in that it was probably too much and I didn't have the right equipment but I'm stubborn and figured I would be able to get out when I chose to. I was wrong. Q's started summoning High Dragons/Undead/Demons and in the end Kwawarimi ability killed me. I had no nether resistance as my ring was destroyed earlier in the dungeon and I took an unresisted Nether breath from a Spectral T-Rex when Kwawarimi failed which knocked me down to @150 hps and it was a struggle from there with no healing left. Too many summoned nasties so even though Kwawarimi was kicking in and saving my butt initially there was so much traffic that I was getting hit when I landed at my destination. Vampiric Dagger let me surive for quite a while but I could never quite make it to the stairs and there were too many Demons and Undead who I couldn't retrieve health from. At this point I kept trying to get to the stairs to get out but I'd get close to them and then something would breathe on me or hit me and I'd be teleported away. At one point I tried swapping position with critters near the stairs but I would get hit there as well and then I'd teleport away again and swapping was costing me hps as well. If I had of made the choice to leave earlier whilst I still had healing I could've not turned Kwawarimi on and taken a hit or two on my way out. Couldn't take that chance though coz there were a couple of things that weren't resisted (eg Nether) that would've proved fatal if I got hit more than once.

I should've cut my losses earlier whilst I still had a couple of healing and my life potion and I could've just recalled and then bounced around till it kicked in - but as usual I wasn't thinking straight under pressure. (I hate failing quests and it cost me).

Man oh man hengband is proving one tough cookie to crack for me.

I refuse to let this variant get the better of me.

Samurai next I think (and then if he fails I'll go back and continue with my lvl 42 Beastmaster).

Spawning pits is a difficult quest, and is probably something most characters want to avoid completely. If you do want to do it, more speed and resists are a must. And it's nice to have taken care of some uniques of around that depth as well. I remember a character that met Bast there, WITH a great escort of (summoning!) nine-tailed foxes.
Ninjas should be able to do the quest, with good stealth, speed, and quick walk to get to the Q's before they summon, but it's still not easy.

Ninjas also have the rush attack ability (forget what it is called). But if things get out of control then, well ...

Sorry to hear that you died.

Oh, man. You went after the Spawning Pits? That quest is seriously bad news. Many, many powerful summoners in there. Its what, level 65? Old Castle is only level 50.

Oh well. It was a good learning experience.

Elliot - I was just impatient.

I've never done the Castle Quest but realised that there are undead there and I didn't have res:nether but I "felt" like doing a quest and was curisious as to what the spawning pits might be like so I decided to have a looksy - (stupid reason I know) - and I figured with a Ninja I would be able to get out of trouble (and I would've if I was'nt so stubborn).

The reward is definitely not worth it and I don't think I will attempt it with my current character (Frignur the Samurai) but I can see how a High level Ranger (Grow Trees, Stone Wall etc) + Bow + Stealth would have a qood crack at it.

I'm tempted, after my Samurai wins of course (lol). to build a Ranger just to complete this stupid quest and say I did it once.
