Another Day, another fairy. This one got way more HP than the last one. It seems like it depends a lot on the starting stats. Anyway, I'm really happy having found the Angband dungeon... No more forest this time :) I've found a really nice shield, but it will have to wait until i can get off-weapon res confu. I also found the artefact stone, the reason why last fairy entered the vault where he died...

Ah - High-Mages.

I tried them in Zangband back in my Zang-only days (2.2.8 or so). I really wanted the narrow, but great spellcasting to work. Never tried it out in Heng the few weeks I tried this variant out though.

Seeing a High-Mage makes me feel like trying Heng out again. I guess much has changed in the couple of years since I played this variant though.

On 7.7.2005 11:35 Matthias wrote:
Can't tell how much changed, as this char is only my second to survive orc caves. As for High-Mages: my last one had more mana than hp when he died... Really nice damage till that point, but poor defence. This one is skilled towards cons as good as possible, and is looking much better

On 9.7.2005 17:14 Matthias wrote:
Died again. A nice combo of playing too fast and not paying attention. First attacked an Emperor writh with a low spell, because I thought it was a lesser W. I was lucky and noticed my mistake at 4 hp, just to then read recall instead of tele level, perfect. ... And it looked really good this time, almost twice the hp compared to last fairy

Third fairy to reach clvl 30, and this time, she won't die... At least not before reaching that cursed 31th level. RNG is having an intresting day. Haven't found book3 yet, instead I found book 4. Grav beam is nice, the others will not be available for quite a while... And then there is this Armor... Robin Hood dropped it, when I stumbled over him in the orc caves.

humm according to edit files this thing has a rarity of 0, what makes it a special drop right?
Anyway, I really wonder if finding this armour is a great fortune, or if I am wearing a sign that sais kill me please. I realize that with 0 total defence Melee is much more lethal than it is anyway with my fairy, but I just cannot resist putting this Armour on anyway..I mean res All :) omg :)

On 11.7.2005 03:46 wrote:
The Robe of The Twilight is one of the most useless armor in ordinary circumstances. For example, go into the Old Man Willow quest wearing it, and you are to be instakilled. And you don't actually need ALL resistance coverd at lower level, and in depth just one summoning and you are killed at once.

But, in Hengband there's a certain interesting place out there, named "Anti-melee Cave". If you are able to deal with enemies there, the robe is better than a PDSM.

On 11.7.2005 15:23 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
I always wondered if a Robe of Twilight would actually *help* a low level sorceror in the AC department ;-)

Seriously, I tried using one of these once. I mistook Sleipnir for a horse (they have the same "old tiles" bitmap) and you might guess what happend!

On 11.7.2005 18:23 Matthias wrote:
I think it really is a nice Armour for lower level casters. Because, with a normal Armour, I would still not having more than some 50-70 Ac. Sure I don't need res Nether in early game, but having the complete lock in one slot opens possibilities. I do see that I cannot wield this armour deeper down, as sooner or later i will be forced into a melee round or two. So I guess i'll reshuffle equipment right now..

btw: it's nice to hear i'm not alone using old tiles mode :)

On 12.7.2005 01:47 Matthias wrote:
I changed back to Elvenkind. Thandruil completes the lock so it looks kinda safe for the moment. I don't dare going much deeper yet though. Also found my first Potion of self knowledge. 18/110 int, 18/130 cons and 98/100 life rating. I have no idea if the live rating is good or average but the cons certainly is nice. Still no third book.. In the meanwhile I know three spells from book 4... With fail rates around 25%...
Probably because of this i now have a mutation... attract demons, oh well

If you can find a robe of twilight with a sorcerer early, it may be a real help as they start with negative AC. But that's pretty rare.

Remember there's a few ways to get rid of mutations; right now the attracting demons thing may not be that dangerous but as you get deeper the demons get nastier ;).

Feel free to tell those ways to me. Can'T find them in the spoiler files. Will get Polymorph self in 5 levels :)

Still alive :) GameTimer sais 24 hours. Wow can't believe i've been playing such a long time on that character already. Still no book3... Must have found at least one of all the other realms...
I'm a bit confused by summoners. They don't seem to need line of sight to summon, and start sending monsters when I'm not expecting it..

That is the notorious "ball radius" summoning, which I think is unique to Hengband.
In this game monsters can use the los-trick just like you, and summoners can do the same thing as those direct attack spells!

And if the summoner is attacked using los, it can do the counterattack with summoning spell (but just once), ignoring walls almost completely, so there is little way to "abuse" los left in Hengband. Beware!

Getting closer to my target (casting call void). Got some really nice drops. First perfect speedboots from a chest, then this really nice xbow with res cha/cnf/dis and cons. And then, finally, in a Gvault, not one but two of my third books :) Dived to lvl59 for now. It feels like I could go deeper already, but I'll take the time to learn about all those scary new monsters. Manastorm is at 13% fail and dropping, really nice spell :)

On a sidenote: I've finally found the first monster deeper then the solar that killed my second fairy, a Time wyrm. Left it alone

omg wtf whatwasthat??? I manastormed Bleys, Master of Manipulation without too many problems in a gvault. Guess I can call it a "unexperienced player" death. I was maybe 4-5 positions away when he... Yeah what did he do?
Some kind of curse it seems ..
Paralized, Orochi dragon ownes me from max to -250 in two rounds.... There goes fairy #4

42, the answer to all questions and my Level when I died... Yes I was asking myself: When will something happen that kills me?

That's the dreaded and bloody curse from ZAngband! (but nowadays I don't see anyone playing the original ZAngband and killed by the blood curse, and I wonder why)

But that was a real tough luck, you've got the worst curse, and you failed the saving throw, and the summoned creatures were extremely nasty! I think no one could survive that situation, though you should be double-resistant to all elemental attacks when you kill Amberites.

And, some other character dumps on the ladder and screenshots might be of help: try Google "blood curse" on this site.

I'm very sorry to see you dead, as this time the pretty sprite looked really promising to my eyes!
Anyway I'm sure you are a player with very good sense on this game. Hope you have fun!

Google brought up a spoiler file... Guess the RNG really wanted a payback for all the luck I had earlier this character. Getting saving throw up seems kinda impossible, as I had enough problems getting cons up. I only get para'ed 1d3 turns... damn then double res might really have saved me..
That or more luck with the orochi's breaths... oh well time for the next fairy :) :)

I suppose a High Mage could swap to an Amulet of Anti-Magic just before killing an Amberite (say, with some high powered wand or staff), but I think you simply got really unlucky. You are chaos rank on the saving throw and something like Amber[3] is high enough to prevent the statue effect. All I can say, having lost 2 characters recently to this curse, is that I feel your pain ...

Another option when confronted with Amberites is *Destruction* ... but at some point they really must die!

Another thing to watch for is the dreaded double move. Check out this dump:

Even with high resistance, you can die in a single turn with anything under 800 hp.

Heh, the first time i got hit by a bloodcurse it was immediately the worst one, and died from it. I was like 'what the?!?!'. I was 'lucky' it happened not very far in the game, as it was done by Rinaldo.

Yes and this is the one point where I noticed the biggest difference to vanilla. My later vanilla winners all had half the high uniques still alive, simple because they can be teleported without a problem. Leaving anything touch alive in Heng seems to be a bad idea because of that alone

>Another thing to watch for is the >dreaded double move
Just as the curse, this thing seems like something that requires several bad luck rolls in a row to be deadly... I'm not sure if i like this kind of "random insta-death", but it defenitly makes late game more intresting

I was bored, so I checked it out. Its still there, but toned down. In Hengband, rand(125) must be greater than you saving throw skill for you to avoid the Statue Effect. In latest Zangband source, this has been toned down to rand(100) ... a much easier saving throw.

Well, atleast it wasn't removed altogether ;-)

Of course, I meant to say rand(X) must be *less* than your saving throw skill to *avoid* the statue effect ... Sorry.
