I see weaponsmiths as some bizarre cross between a tourist and a warrior... A warrior does pretty much everything better, but the weaponmaster does have a bit more survivability than a tourist.

One note: don't drain un'ided equipment. While the game protects you from destroying un'ided artifacts, there is no protection on draining power from, oh, an unidentified Werewindle. A weaponmaster I played once did exactly that! Particularly embarasssing given the existence of the innate ability "judgment."

I tested this with a freezing Bastard swrod that I added fire brand to and it worked. In this case you'll lose the essences you used to add the speed but the trident will still be of slaying and you can add another ability to it.

You've indirectly pointed out one of the reasons that the poor, maligned (well, not as much as the weaponsmith, perhaps, but still maligned) Archer is a formidable class. They can make their own arrows AND get bonuses to their missle RoF and multiplier.

Imagine if you were getting 3+ shots/round with that crossbow and its multiplier was bumped up by 1!

I agree that Slayer is usually the better choice, but I think Vorpal is better for my situation. I generally get 3 or 4 Snicker Snacks around. Not sure how much the vorpal hit bumps up the damage totals, but it's pretty cool see all those gauging, maiming, smiting and, ultimately, cutting in half messages ;-)

Bad Luck in the Arena, though. The Shambler breathed on its first 2 moves, and that was too much for poor Lordonn ...
