9 hours of patient play to level up to CL35 (well, I did abuse the tower a bit, so that probably cut a few hours off my play time).

Key notes so far:
[1] Really early BoSpeed! Only +3, but I'll take 'em.
[2] Crappy life ... need a new one. Str, Con and life rating are all biffed, and Dex is only 18/100 base. So I keep stat potions at home for the time being.
[3] Really nice 4d5 trump weapon from lousy, followed quickly by a 4d5 pattern weapon. Both got the +1 attack boost and served adequately.
[4] Utter lack of Con essences. Eventually town scummed a Westernesse +2 and drained pattern weapon so I could add +3 Con to my boots. This adds over 100hp ...
[5] Amazing Bert. I saw a ring fly out of his hands when I whomped him. Figured it was Frakir, but it was a +10 RoSpeed! Amazing!

In celebration, I did the Cloning Pits (nothing interesting) and the Old Castle, where the Greater Titans brought me to deaths door 3 separate times (Probably should have Chaos branded my weapon instead of Slay Evil). One of them dropped a Lordly Protection, though ...

Sick of waiting for !oNew Life, I raided the Mountain. And wow, I gained 6 points of str (18/70 to 18/130) and 3 points of con (18/90 to 18/120). Gained Life rating all the way up to 102%!! Happy Joe!

And after patiently dispatching Tiamat's horde, I finally amassed 160 essences of con. Drained my elven cloak for the remaining 40, and presto: Some damn fine boots :)

Now I need to improve my melee damage ...

Regading Diamond Edges, for some reason they are "off limits" to everything except ?oArtifact Creation. So I'll just stick it out with this Blade of Chaos Holy Avenger. I think adding +1 attack was the right move, since it already has key slays for the end game. Vampirism would be nice, but that doesn't always work, while an extra attack never fails ... unless it misses ;)

[1] Failed the arena. Went in with Seeker Bolts of Exectute Dragon and Extra Shots. 900hp damage per missle and 1.5 shots per round at +25 speed with all resists and 1000+ hp was still not enough. Damn wyrm got off 5 breaths, and did me in.

[3] Charged down to DL99 to face Oberon. Failed the first time. He would get down to 1 star, teleport, and I couldn't find him on the big level. Had to search the entire level 2 times, missing him somwhere ... There he is, back to 5 stars. Bastard. Knock him down to 1 star and he teleports, and *again* I can't find him. Read 30 ?oTeleport hoping he would show up in my ESP range. Nope. Recalled to town and set the levels to always be small. Repeat and beat! Bad news is that I lost 5 staves of healing on the level as the RNG decided Unmakers were going to take over the 1x2 level after the battle was finished. I barely escaped with my life as my destruction was gone as well.
[4] Combat Echizen was impossible to kill. 5 goes. He would get down to 1 star, and then do his Blink double heal triple move combo back up to 5 stars. Bastard. Eventually, I built a kit just for him with a Kill Human diamond edge, and, what was really the problem after all, potions of heroism and scrolls of holy chant. He's got a 350 AC, after all. This time, I took him out in 3 rounds. "Oh, no" indeed!

Now I wait to get the remaining uniques before the final battle.

In fact, I never saw another drainable speed item (Cloaks of the Bat?) so I was stuck with what I consider low end game speed, especially encumbered with goodies for the final battle (+23 base is a bit too low ...). But give up my +2 attacks ring? Never!

I had the levels set to always small while diving to the bottom of the various dungeons, and forgot to change back. Small level fight wasn't too bad however, and it was over pretty quick.

Artifactless is very hard. Covering all resists, and gaining decent stats, and gaining decent speed seems all but impossible. Without the boots, I'm sure I would not have made it.

Oh, and the Serpent did drop his goodies. Let's just say that if you want to use artifacts at that point, it is OK ;-)
