After many unsuccessful mages, I've hit on a possible working strategy. Plan is for him to a be a gentleman mage/martial-artist with lots of steamware and possibly mutations.

So far, he's working out great. The attracting elementals mutation hasn't been cool, but getting a scorpion tail absolutely rocked. He's also got 3 steamware pieces so far: Alpha eyes and spurs, and Beta dermal plating. Thanks to the plating and that amazing ring of protection (+32???, and he found it on level 48) his AC is 110-ish, which makes him extremely difficult to hit. That's handy, because he's still pretty offensively challenged, though he's slowly getting better.

He's used an even mix of magic and melee so far. They're both pretty mediocre at this point.

Gamma level dermal plating plus a ring of protection upgrade gave him AC 185 at around 20th level. Since opponents tend to use melee when a character is in melee range, Faustus's main tactic since getting that AC has been to close with opponents as rapidly as possible since pretty much nothing can hit him.

Its pretty cool. He doesn't have see invisible yet, and one time I had him rest and when he was fully healed he tried to move, only to accidentally attack something. At some point while resting he was attacked by a group of invisible monsters, but since they never hit him, he never woke up.

Other upgrades have been alpha level reflexes and core furnace (+3 to speed and +2 health respectively), gamma spurs (9d15+stun!) and dermal plating (+40 AC but -2 speed), and still alpha eyes (60' infravision).

He got a better hat and an upgraded 2nd ring of protection, but his equipment isn't all that different yet.

He's got quite a few spell books, but hasn't really used them that much.

Recovered 5 more books from 2 vaults on level 35, bringing his recovered total up to 37. Its amazing, every where he goes, there's a book. At one point he was fighting Steamballs and back to back balls dropped books.

Slowly upgrading the steamware and equipment. The pocket lantern was a great find thanks to saving the oil inventory slot, plus the nice stat bonuses. He's upgraded his eyes to betas and his spurs to delta (15d30+slow and stun, which is awfully impressive).

And I had such a good feeling about him, too. Instakilled by Countess Bathory on level 30. He was at about 400 hp and 60 wp which apparently wasn't enough to survive a full strength nether breath from her. Faustus only needed one round to get into melee range with her, but that one round ended up being one too many.

Really a shame. Those delta spurs were really shredding things and he almost had enough money saved up for delta dermal plating.

A few thoughts - martial arts damage does indeed scale up nicely. In the early going its pretty much useless (Faustus lived by shooting and scooting with his sad little ice bolts), but by the time he died, Faustus used melee on most opponents with the magic for special circumstances or to soften up opponents.

The reason for that wasn't the sheer destructive power of Martial Arts (its good enough, but not that great) or the killer spurs (which were by far his most consistent attack at the end), or even his great AC (though that probably helped him live as long as he did). The real issue was that the big mage spells drained too much hp for rapid casting.

Was I doing something wrong? Skills in the wrong places or casting the wrong spells, perhaps? Faustus primarily used fireball and at the end it averaged about 140 damage, but it seemed to drain 60-100 hp when he cast it. That was an improvement over when he started with it and with the amulet of regeneration and his AC, it never got him into serious trouble, but that's because he never expected it to be a killing attack.

Against ice elementals or one-eyed jacks and other fire susceptible monsters, sure, it could kill them, but even against, say, a bunch of 8s it would be a close thing as to whether the damage from the fireballs would kill the 8s before the hp drain killed Faustus.

I love the way magic works with the various drains and reducing your risk by building the right skills. Its a great idea. I just fear the hp drain is too high. If a clevel 29 gentleman who has mage a serious investment into magic struggles to kill 8s, well, he's going to be forced to play as a hybrid of some sort.

Struggles to kill 8s with his spells, I mean. He cut them to shreds with his melee attacks.

Having finally gotten another mage up to a respectable level, I've decided that DrFaustus's problems with spellcasting stemmed from poor spell selection on my part. While fireball does indeed do a lot of damage over a nice area, it has by far the worst hp drain of the various mid-level attack spells. The various other spells of roughly similar level are somewhat less destructive, but they are also far, far less draining to cast and are much better choices for regular casting.
