For a work in progress, I give Steamband a thumbs up. The difficulty ramps up quite fast (I just lost consecutive level 19 characters to the One-Eyed Jack, both on level 7. He's fast, has at least 750 hp, hits quite hard and blinds plus has a decent breath weapon... and he's on level 7?!? Out of depth, admittedly, but its still a bit scary.), but its only 50 levels deep, so I guess it has to.

Like all Angbands, the difference between this character and the ones who died pretty much comes down to taking detection seriously. Earlier, I had a level 9 character get one-hit killed by an off-screen monster on dungeon level 2 (it was a unique and I was doing a difficult quest, so I wasn't completely surprised). If I had been detecting more aggressively, I might have seen him coming.

I like bringing the various books back to the library. Kind of like the ToME god quests, except there a million of them (and the reward is a bit less), so it doesn't matter if you miss a few.

Definitely still getting the hang of the skill system, as this guy already has some serious skill redundancies. If I realized what survival skills could do, I wouldn't have bothered with the magic.

Anyway, its got its warts (IMO guns are still too powerful), but its fun.
