He's another Daione Sidhe gentleman martial artist/mage, though he's found some nice weapons so far and hasn't used barehand very much.
He finished a quest on level 7 and after getting his reward, took a medium difficulty quest. The guild told him to kill the Marquis de la Tour on level 9.
What!?! For level 9, de la Tour is a wrecking machine. He's durable, he resists everything, he's speed +20, and he fires a shotgun all the freaking time which does 100+ damage per shot, is unresistable, and I've never seen it miss.
Bodb was level 20 at the time, so he hung out of level 8, clearing it over and over, looking for the third mage book (Sepher Yetzirah) which has fire storm and ice storm, which don't do a lot of damage, but can be cast out of LOS. So, finally, about the time he made level 24, Bodb found the book, had almost totally upgraded his kit to ego equipment and earned enough money to get beta wired reflexes.
So now he's down on level 9, and its not going well. The fire and ice storms barely even dent de la Tour, and Bodb has faced him 3 times, all ending with de la Tour barely scratched, and Bodb teleporting away and severely injured.
The real duel isn't between de la Tour and Bodb, because de la Tour is just toying with him. The real duel is between me and the quest reward. Can I force myself to intentionall fail the quest and more on before de la Tour kills Bodb? Only time will tell.

On 15.2.2005 20:25 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel: 31, dlevel: 20) Just upgraded from 3.9 to 4.0, which generally was a good thing. I like the more consistent and in-theme naming of things. However, there was a problem in that the green eyeshades of Augustin Dupin were transformed into the green eyeshades of the Pharohs and now has all the powers of the Bulltail of the Pharoahs. Since that seemed a little weird, Bodb isn't using it.
In other good news, 4.0 does indeed solve the sphere of flame bug (Thank you, oh powers that be!), so its rapidly returning to the list of spells that get used a lot.
I also checked out the new gentlemen skill-tree and I'm trying to figure out how someone is supposed to get Fleetness up to level 20 without buying skill ceiling upgrades. I don't know if it can be done. Bodb certainly can't, but that's my fault because I spent points without looking at the skill tree.
Anyway, the magic/martial arts combo is working GREAT. Haven't really tried the Glaaki or De Vermis spells yet, but he hasn't really needed them yet.
Using Athleticism's Burst of Speed, he's at speed +20 most of the time, and the combination of Soul Storm and his martial arts is working very well at this depth. He just cleared a pit of aces and scattered higher cards (jokers and kings, only) and never needed to heal or use his other spells except to knock down cards that got out of the pit and tried to flee.
On 16.2.2005 03:20 valis@oook.cz wrote: Well, you were responsable for getting the sphere of flame bug fixed, so bully for you. The artifact is a consequence of switching from 0.3.9 to 0.4.0. A fresh 0.4.0 game shouldn't have that problem.
Otherwise I'm glad you're playing! have fun!
On 16.2.2005 23:26 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel: 39, dlevel: 34) Thanks to slowly plugging along, clearing pit after pit of cards and various other monsters, Bodb has grown in power and pumped up his skills. For a while, he was my first Steamband character to ever actually have more skill points than he needed. I then decided it would be neat if he could cast "priest" spells too, and I don't think that's going to prove to be a good use of skill points.
Still, Bodb seems powerful enough, so far. Just killed Dracula and the poor guy spent the whole battle stunned. Martial Arts starts getting quite powerful at the high levels, even with Bodb's paltry Muscle. Additionally, maybe I'm crazy, but Soulstorm seems to be getting more powerful as time goes on as well.
Still, Bodb definitely has his strengths and weaknesses. Anything that tries to melee him is toast, since it really won't be able to hit Bodb through his 270 AC, and Bodb will stun it so it won't get many chances. On the other hand, Bodb's resists are pretty lackluster for this stage of the game and virtually anything that has a breath weapon of something other than the base 4 elements will send Bodb running. Even 2 or 3 Envys can work him over pretty well.
Bodb still uses his magic quite a bit as well. Soulstorm gets cast every time he gets close to an enemy, and meteor strike and sphere of elements are perfectly acceptable ranged attacks, and they realy shine against opponents that are vulnerable to something.
On 17.2.2005 23:23 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel: 43, dlevel: 37) Getting reading for the final battles. Bodb's offense, stats, hp, and AC are ready for prime-time, but his resists are still a little shaky. 43% vs Elec, 24% vs Nether, and 9% vs Sound are some really exploitable weaknesses.
Funny that the only Steamband character I've ever run who was primarily a melee fighter (Bodb's spell casting skills are perfectly capable of carrying the load, and he just killed a bunch of Vorois using nothing but magic, just to show he could do it, but melee has been the backbone of his offense since about clevel 25 and I can't say that about any other character I've run who has even gotten close to this far.) has such a crappy muscle stat, but that just goes to show you never know how things will turn out. Without skill and equipment bonuses, its a whopping 273.
On 18.2.2005 22:28 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: (clevel: 49, dlevel: 44) Finding the ring of Dr Materialismus and the Robe of the Djinn Princess were the two key finds that rounded out Bodb's kit. The ring boosts stats and speed, and gives huge bonuses to exactly what Bodb needed: rNether, rPsi, and the other mental attacks, but it penalized his more mundane resists. The robe of the princess gave much better boosts to the basic resists than did his prior armor, enough so that he could swap that pendant (which was basically +35 rBase) for an amulet of regeneration, which is by far my favorite magic item in the game. Nemo's ammy is great, but blocking spell casting is too much of a hindrance.
Last quest was for 15 Nazi SS, which was kind of silly as Bodb had already killed 130+ of them on previous levels. His skills are pretty much set, so I don't think I'll bother with any more quests.
He's killed all 67 of the uniques he's encountered, with the Babbage Engine as the toughest, and none were too much trouble. I'm gulping nervously, but I think Bodb's ready for the end.

True to his word, Bodb darted down the stairs, manhandled Moreau, and then went to town on Fu Manchu.
I forgot to mention earlier, but Bodb has been experimenting with the Glaaki spells. They're pretty darn useful if you've got any melee capabilities.
Against Moreau and Manchu, Bodb had burst of speed running (so total speed +46), stygian warfare, demonic shield, and demonic fury all running, plus had cast Soulstorm a few times for good measure.
Since the spells all worked so nicely together, Bodb pretty much overwhelmed them. It took 3 rounds of melee attacks to kill Moreau and Manchu only 4. The each managed to get off a couple moves, but both wasted their opportunities. Moreau tried to melee both times, only landing a couple blows, and Manchu tried to, hmm, confuse Bodb or something, and it didn't work.
I'm still a bit surprised at just how devastating Bodb was at the end. I'm not a code-diver, so I don't know for certain, but perhaps the critical hits multiplied the damage from all bonuses as well, and with all those spells running, Bodb had some pretty hefty to-dam bonuses.
In other news, Bodb killed 2(!) Etheric Dimensional Phase Automata (I believe its my first time killing them). Those things are horrendously nasty. In fact, I'd rather face Fu Manchu and Moreau working together than, say, a half-dozen of those things all at once. Panther tanks are bad, but at that point, Bodb was cutting through them pretty fast, and they were too slow to be much of a problem anymore.
On 19.2.2005 10:20 valis@oook.cz wrote: Heh. You got lucky. Fu could have been *much* nastier. :-) He's got some nasty nasty tricks up his sleeve. Congratulations on your win.
