Another try at a barehand possessor. Have run into remarkably few uniques so far, plus have only gotten one Tulkas quest, so I've had to put way more skill points into Prayer than I expected. Maybe I'll play with a grape jelly for a while and get another shot.

Used a cyclops, then a dark elven sorcerer (the spells and speed were awesome), then got Shelob's body and head to Erebor to hunt for Glarung and the big Wyrms. Finally got a GWoL and somehow got forced out of it and it dissolved. Got back into Shelob, killed Glarung who thoughtlessly failed to leave a corpse. Amazing battle that raged over most of the map. Didn't get a single decent corpse out of it, though. Kept scumming until running into a Master Q which flung opponents at Thumper until a GWoC corpse survived.

Off to get Trone now, then Mordor. Still not sure how I'm going to handle power spell casters like druj and the like as the GWoC's breath really isn't that impressive. Hmm.

Wow, I'm not even sure how he died. One minute he was cheerfully bashing skull druj and still at around 1,800 hp (dragon possessors rock), and the next minute he was at 1 hp and a druj was finishing him off with a water ball.

Could it have been a mana thing? I was careful not to get too low, but breath was my main weapon against the druj. He was probably at 5 or 6, then suddenly he was at -1. Maybe a couple druj in a row drained mana, he had cursed equipment so he couldn't get forced out of his body, and maybe some other side effect I'm not aware of happened.

Very sad. Thumper was unstoppable one on one and his hp/resist combo (plus reflection, immunity, etc) was good enough that he could usually just take whatever everyone else was dishing out while he pummelled his opponents to death one at a time. Deep Angband would definitely have been doable, but the Nether Realms would have been tough. A lot of run and hide, I guess, as I have no idea how Thumper would have been able to kill multiple 150th level Dreadlords.

The Tulkas/barehand combo works VERY nicely. Against Maeglin, loaded up with rings of extra attacks and damage and with the enhanced Divine Aim on, he was doing around 4k damage per round. Maeglin fell in 2 rounds and lesser Balrogs generally went in 1.

I knew druj (or some sort of power spellcaster) were going to be his downfall. Dragon breath is sufficiently destructive to be an adequate ranged attack and area attack, but with just 17 mana, he couldn't afford to throw around the GWoC's breath attacks freely. Sure, they were often free, but 3 mana a shot adds up fast. Even at speed +52 he just couldn't close on enemy spell casters fast enough to avoid major summoning.

In this case, it was a princess quest for skull druj. Charging into a room with 11 skull druj is suicide, so melee was out of the question. With breath, he could take on 3 at a time, but his limited mana was tough. Had to rest and recover after the first three, and against the second 3, killing one and seriously damaging the other 2 got him down to 6 or so mana (which was when he died).

Well, he was fun to play, but Archers and Thaumaturges remain my favorite.

One final note: In addition to thoughtfully dying fast, Maeglin was also incredibly generous - 5 artifacts! I stuck them in Mathom for posterity. As an added plus, all were 'real' artifacts, not a randart in the lot. Of course, not one of them was useful either, but its the thought that counts.
