Decided to finally play a Ranger (and went with the cliche Dunadan... also a first).

And I have to say... I got killed a lot. Like, I mean, a lot. I found it difficult (and sometimes tedious) to get characters to stat gain, and even when I did, life was very perilous whenever I tried to explore the deeper reaches of the dungeon.

So what was different this time? Luck, as usual. Two rods of detection around 2000'-2500' plus the Robe of Beldoreb (telepathy). And, I imagine, my sources of stealth (Cloak of Vandelya +4, armor of Elvenkind +3, a two-handed flail defender +3). I'd like to say there was more to it, but there really wasn't (though I did find a nice Dagger of Gondolin (+4, +7) at 400'). Once I could know where everything was and tip-toe through like walking through a statue garden, there was very little challenge. That was true even during the period when I was only fighting melee (because my bow was only +12 damage, and I hadn't found good ammo yet).

The game flipped a switch rather abruptly when I obtained two rings of speed (+8) around CL 38, and I was feeling practically ready for the endgame (which I wasn't). And then I hit CL 40, with its additional extra shot and Rune of Protection... and good gracious, nothing is more untouchable than a ranger at the end of a line-of-sight-abuse corridor punctuated with Runes.

For the first time in my experience, I decided to take out Morgoth without wading through all the uniques. I only killed 69 by the end.

I wonder if Morgoth moves more intelligently in current versions of Angband with respect to line of sight. After some trial and error, I discovered that I could set up shop in a large open room, cast <<... wait for it...>> Door Creation, and then pepper him with arrows as he advanced. Teleport Other, rinse, and repeat. There is no honor in LoS abuse, but on the other hand, I don't think I had victory without it.
