You may want to drop to 1500' (dlvl 30) quickly. It's not any more dangerous than where you are now, and there are potions which increase your basic stats down there. Where you are now, it's just annoying hounds everywhere.

In the end I thought I was being clever running away from a tough fight by climbing up the stairs. Unfortunately I didn't notice how low my HP were at the time, nor how badly I was poisoned. Death came as a surprise! I guess that's the game's way of telling me I need to be more careful and pay more attention.
