This is the first character of a challenge I'm trying to beat the game killing only Sauron and Morgoth.

Sniper made some progress leveling mainly by finding and disarming traps. He did accidentally punch and kill what was probably an unseen clear mushroom patch. It didn't go in the monster information kill total, and I didn't terminate the attempt based on that, just noting it on the honor system. :)

I chose a rogue on the theory that if I could make it to potion of experience death I could scum with detect items and level into the 30's, at which point with lots of TO'ing & hopefully a source of mass banishment I could loot vaults.

Choosing a half-troll was, alas, a mistake I think - I hadn't banked on the absolutely terrible saving throw and stealth. I got some gear and could soak up damage, but essentially every monster I got near would wake up immediately, and I was frequently blind and/or confused.

The other great difficulty was not having a spell to detect traps/doors/stairs, and this is the one character I've ever played where rods of trap location weren't tumbling all around me.

A few tidbits:
-My dream setup was to have a master thief stuck in a corridor behind a mold or other immobile creature, so I could let it create traps over and over again to farm for experience. Alas, Sniper met his fate trying to bait Wormtongue into creating some traps, and ended up phasing into a room full of casters hasted by neekerbreekers I think.
-Disarming chests gives more exp than a normal trap, though I only found one.
-A few times I did escape death by causing enough damage to scare a quick monster (panther, etc) so I could run away
-I'd forgotten about scrolls of trap creation, but it was a nice surprise to find a stack, 40 free exp apiece!

For the next attempt, I'm thinking I'll try a kobold or elf-rogue.
