Should I wait on the Rod til I have more magic device skill? And would it be suicide for me to try the lost hobbit quest at this point? (CL 19)

On 25.6.2003 23:19 divinecloudburst wrote:
Magic device is a good loremaster skill for direct damage, but you don't have any worthy tips to put in you adamantite rod yet. You really need to get some more resistances (and hitpoints) before you take on the maze.

I'd advise finishing the Barrow-Downs, then cleaning out the Orc Cave. The special level has some artifacts in it, one of which grants Free Action which you desperately need. You could also use some better totems; try to get a hydra or a lizard king south of Bree.

On 26.6.2003 00:47 satinka33@netscape.net wrote:
Thought so -- and the mage staff as well, seems stupid to put a low-level spell in it! Would you put an attack or a defense spell (or something else) in a mage staff?

I agree, my resistances rot. I do have a lizard king corpse in my house, I just don't have high enough summoning yet that I want to risk it - I've tried a few higher level totems and they tend to turn on me, so I thought I'd keep the corpse tucked away for the time being. (Gruesome thought, eh? :-))

Finally got a few Fumblefinger quests - before I read the fora I didn't realize you'd get something for refusing his help, so now I've got some added areas. It's way too tempting to branch out, and I did, a little... but Loremasters seem like generalists to me, even if that means it'll take them a lot longer to gain in level. Maybe I'm making a mistake there. (That Harp has me itching to put points into Music, but I've staved that off so far....)

I'm working my way down the Barrow Downs; did one beastmaster quest but the God quest worries me.

Thanks again for your reply!

No problem, and you really should make some partial totems. You've got enough mana that even with a low summoning skill, you can have a small army to help for a while. The best pets are fast, hard-hitting monsters who don't have breath or ball attacks, since they tend to accidentally fry you. Cyclops, lizard kings, and some hydras fit this category.

On 1.7.2003 02:11 satinka33@netscape.net wrote:
You'd recommend partial totems over true ones? I suppose there's some sort of fine line regarding that decision, but I don't have enough experience to know where it falls. Right now baby dragons are obeying me, but I'm going to take your comment regarding accidental attacks to heart and find something else that doesn't do breath/ball attacks.... Swamp, here I come :-)

On 5.7.2003 05:28 satinka33@netscape.net wrote:
Still looking for rconf, and really despising the #$@ breeders. I seem to be able to sustain about 3 pets from a partial totem before the summoned critters get angry (summoning skill = 4).

Any suggestions as to whether I should allocate any more skill points to corpse preservation? Currently at 5.2. Oh, and I am having a hard time understanding what's so great about mimics, but then my skill in that's only 1.5, so...

On 5.7.2003 09:29 divinecloudburst wrote:
Corpse-preservation isn't too useful for non-possessing loremasters. It's handy to get totems, but it's not essential, since unique totems are useless. With more points in Summoning, you'll be able to use partial totems, and then you won't have as much need for corpses.

On 5.7.2003 16:57 satinka33@netscape.net wrote:
I've seen the posts about how powerful Possessors can be, and it does tempt me, but the few times I've tried it I've had trouble with the mechanics of it. (Which says to me I just have to kill off a few more characters for practice ;-))

A summoner needs corpses to make their totems, so I'm not sure I understand your comment. Also, is it always preferable to use partial vs. true totems? When would you use a true one?

On 6.7.2003 08:00 divinecloudburst wrote:
You can use true totems as backup in case your mana runs out. This isn't usually necessary though, since the higher your Summoning skill is, the less mana partial summons consume. Since partial totems are never destroyed, you only need one corpse for each type of creature you need.

AUGHHHHH!!!!!! *sigh* This character is effectively dead, and it's no fault of mine, either. My laptop was hit by a worm (not the "big" one that's been going around lately) and I lost internet access while dealing with it. Eventually I had my SO ghost my system and then we wiped it and reloaded... and when I did so, *ALL* of my Roguelikes were gone.

FWIW, this character had achieved CL42, had completed the Maze, Sand lair, Mirkwood, Illusory Castle (off the top of my head, I think there were more), had taken a big bite of the Helcaraxe (though that ice is a pain in the butt!) and was starting to go into Moria and Mordor.

The last symbiont was a Silent Watcher with 2000 HP (I tried a few quylthulgs but they were nothing compared to that - hadn't run into any "greater" Q's yet though) and my two partial totems were an Elder Areana and an AMHD. In the kit (among other stuff), two ROS (about 18 total) that I found, not bought, at low depths. Got the antiteleportation mutation which made finding the Anchor somewhat redundant. Boy, was that handy!

I realize this is nothing much in the grand scheme of things, but I'm rather sad about this. I do have an old backup, but it's something like CL12 or so and just not worth it.

Onward and upward, got a new char going.
