Wiruin the Maelstrom breathes ice.
You die.
I hate pine trees so much. Worst... tree species... ever.
On 23.2.2014 17:29 Philip wrote: It's always a shame when you have to let go of a great weapon to use a better, but less cool one, isn't it? I love Totila, but it can't really compare with a lance. Just imagine a bear running around with a lance and with a flail. Which is cooler?
On 23.2.2014 19:03 HallucinationMushroom wrote: I know, it's so annoying! It's not quite *so* bad since I was still only getting 2 attacks with the lance. I've yet to find a dexterity potion. The lure of finally having confusion and blind covered at the same time was just too seductive.
On 23.2.2014 19:56 Philip wrote: I have Totila now too, which is funny. What I wouldn't give for the Torque of Boromir right now.
On 24.2.2014 17:34 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Cleared a demon pit and a pit with a 50/50 mix of ancient and mature white. Finally, some dex potions! With the +2 dex ring, I net 5 attacks a round... though maybe +14 to skill is smarter at 4 attacks a round. ? Don't care. I want the 5 attacks! I guess I need to be on the lookout for rpoison.
I've been playing with autoscum on, though I tend to prefer autoscum off so that great levels are rarer and therefore feel more special. I try to find what triggers the strong level feelings before shoving on, but as every level is probably going to be amazing from here on out, I'm tempted to turn autoscummer off, now that the often snoozeriffic first stage of the game is over. But, it doesn't really seem fair to do so... I mean, shouldn't you keep autoscum off or on as a permanent setting for the whole game, or am I the odd one out on this line of thought? Now is when autoscummer becomes really dangerous, right?
On 24.2.2014 18:01 Philip wrote: I never felt autoscum to be more dangerous past dlvl 1-5. At that point you're far more likely to meet something out of depth than you otherwise would be. Past that it just keeps you on your toes. I wouldn't sweat it much. It's essentially just the game doing what you would be likely to do yourself for you - get rid of boring levels.
On 24.2.2014 18:32 HallucinationMushroom wrote: Then I think I'll turn it off and enjoy what I consider a more typical range of levels. I'm currently playing the pace I like: exploring all the levels and clearing most of what I see then moving on the next level. I love persistent levels, btw.
In the absence of persistent levels, what I would really like to see is a word of recall that ports you from home to the next level lower of the dungeon... what is happening is that I word of recall back to a level I've already marked as cleared, but get an amazing feeling, and then feel compelled to explore it and I get caught in this pretty much neverending loop until I decide to break it. Man, I've got some weird hangups.
On 24.2.2014 19:11 Philip wrote: Hah, same thing here, but worse. I have preserve mode on, so I get special feeling. Fair enough, I'll explore. Lots of Ego items. OK, won't hurt to do another. Special feeling. Ah, look at that, a vault. Hey, that vault is massive. Huh, bloodspike already. Miskey into a trap door, but haven't lost any artifacts, so that's a relief. Hell, I got spared that stupid vault. Superb feeling. Ah, I need to go home, screw it. And I'd like to just build up 100 000 gold and leave it be, but I keep buying stat potions.
On 24.2.2014 19:22 HallucinationMushroom wrote: I would much more likely play preserve off if it only gave a special feeling for an artifact on the floor. I hate that jelly-pit special feeling.

I traded off the acid brand activation gloves for free action, and with a few new dex potions after clearing a graveyard, I hit 5 attacks a round with both ring slots free. So, I'm going to try two +14 skill rings. If I find a good deadliness ring I might mix 'em up a bit... but it's good to have some free slots. A poison resist ring would be great, RNG, if you're listening.

Where's the loot, uniques? Lungorthin dropped mysteries of angmar and some {good} arrows. Saruman dropped less. Player ghosts drop nothing or just regular items... I thought they dropped chests. I've drank 2 regular healing potions all game. Thank goodness for the staff of healing I found... out of bear form I was able to use it several times during the Lungorthin fight. Out of recharge scrolls. I should probably just restock the scroll store. Maybe the black market too. Sometimes there will be a bajillion healing potions for sale at once there...
I don't understand the staff of winds, but I've seen lots of people swear by it. How, exactly, do you use it? The only times I tried it nothing much seemed to happen.
On 27.2.2014 23:26 Philip wrote: Player ghosts drop chests in variants which have a working DROP_CHEST flag. I was lucky enough to get the bazillion healing potions in the black market.
Watch out for powerful nether attacks, the more powerful ringwraiths can do serious damage unresisted.
As far as I understand, the staff of winds does damage to monsters and moves them some distance. The damage to all and Rift effect is handy enough, I imagine. It's also reliable - it won't break. Haven't ever actually found it though.
And now, since it is now the time it is on the server, 23:26, I should sleep. I still have school tomorrow.

Okay, really Glaurung? A pair of good dwarven boots and a wand of dragon's breath? It'll be our secret you can't breathe fire on your own anymore...
I'm getting much better drops from Greater Hell Wyrms with much less risk. Lungorthin, Glaurung, Saruman, the ringwraiths, the defiler, ... the list goes on and on. Where's the excellent treasure you guys? I guess I'm going to have to enter hunter mode and look for the few nasty dragons I can actually take down.

I don't like to spoil artifact knowledge, so unless I remember what something is, which is quite rare sadly, I'm going to have to table decisions on some of this. Pretty sure Tulkas has +4 to the str/con/dex, and activates for haste. Barahir has +1 to all stats? and rpois, and goes great with Angrist. I burned my last *id* on Osondir. Thalkettoth I think has rconfu? and +3 dex and 3 ele resists... or just acid? I'll probably get nakie, except for Thalkettoth and drink my self knowledge potion. Barakkuled is probably junk, Turmil probably the same. The heavy crossbow x6 is first time I actually paused and considered a bow, perhaps in my whole life. I think my Hellband ranger used a crossbow to kill Lucifer and Satan, but other than that, I've got nothing.

The arkenstone is great for unlimited enlightenment, and the mantle of shadows pairs well with it for some quick theft. Still need *identify* scrolls, or maybe a food of paralyzation or potion of sleep or self knowledge to find out of gloves of agility provide free action... if so, I can net 6 attacks a round. I'm still kicking myself for ditching the unique shield that covered it along with minor element res. I'm considering buying out the stores again... maybe the black market will cough up the 21 potions of minor healing I need. Also, with all the ring swapping I can't stay in Dragon form, which has been great for activating all this magical bullshit I lug around everywhere I go.

Man, I need a whole heap of *id* scrolls. Tele-away and mantle of shadows really make picking the level clean not so tough. I was able to id everything that looked like it might be good. I didn't tackle the center of the map, though, but I did *destruct* it, which is where Thingol was.

Anyone who plays O, and then goes, you know what, I'm going to branch a variant off of this sadistic shit, is someone you probably don't want to cross. You Vanilla players are in for it, you just don't know it yet... Oh, hai Nick! Nothing but <3.
This is what this fucking bear looks like right before the Morgy fight, because, damn, I am sick of grinding up and saving for it. I bought out the black market as much as I could afford and have 20 healing potions. And that ring of light and dark resist... you know, just shoot me.

I have a new respect for the Cuddle clan's FA victories. Bearform = horrid magic device. Even out of bearform device use is sketchy. I spent much of the game in dragon form to get around this, pretty much negating the only reason I chose to play a Beorning in the first place.
*sigh*. I would've like to have won, of course, but this was such a miserably boring character, I don't think I would've treasured the victory much, other than saying, yeah, I beat O... by grinding forever and buying out the black market 10 times. I don't think I had any fun at all. I'm going to load a saved version of this character and see if the game generated any awesome randarts at all. My main draw to play O sure as shit isn't fun, but I hope to find some fucking cool weapons. Even regular cool, like Calris, or Angrist with Barahir's ring, or the Glaive would be nice, but man, I spent most of the game with Totila, and yeah, Ringil is like, cool and all, but it doesn't scratch that big damage dice itch.

Buffed up and in bear form, I was at ridiculous lethality with it... +78 skill and 248 deadliness is madness. I was dropping stars of Morgoth fairly quickly. Plus, since it's light, it often triggered the 7th attack.
I don't know about Ringil-specific advice, but I guess general advise-wise, just watch out for the monsters that hit your resistance holes and keep your ele resists at least at 70, more if you can. I was still running from Balrogs at the very end, and wary of disenchantment/chaos breathers. Most of my O/FA characters tackle great worms of power for fun and loot, but this guy was struggling to put a kit that had blind/confu/freeaction/see invisible/elements together, much less covering the gotcha breaths like dark, disenchant, chaos, shard, nether. I will never ditch the weak ele resist, light/dark shield again.
