Don't really have much to show for it, but I thought I'd post anyway since this is the first time I've found a RoS in OAngband.
At least the RoS might give me a better shot at some of the vaults...

On 5.5.2007 19:19 AnonymousHero wrote: Slow, but steady progress... I now a couple of RoS, but I can't wear both because of lacking rPoison if I do.
On 5.5.2007 20:34 AnonymousHero wrote: Cool... found Narya! :) Of course I can't really use it for anything, but I think I'll keep it stashed in the home for now.
Getting increasingly impatient for rDisenchant (and rPoison on a non-ring slot), so I think I'll stop for today...
On 6.5.2007 09:43 AnonymousHero wrote: Lucked out and found a =Eregion with rPoison... so I can ditch the =rPoison and get a little more permanent speed (up to +12 now)
On 6.5.2007 11:55 AnonymousHero wrote: Nice... just bought(!) a pair of BoS (+10 no less) in the BM... Cost a cool 1.7M, but hey it's only gold... :D
I'm going to have to reshuffle some equipment to compensate for losing rNexus from my boots of Stability, but I think (hope!) I can get rNexus covered again.
On 6.5.2007 15:12 AnonymousHero wrote: Well, I've made level 50... That's a first in O for me (had a previous incarnation up to level 49 before he bit the dust). I'm still not able to swap in the BoS, but I did find Cubragol, so I'm slowing getting faster and faster :) Wouldn't mind finding Isildur right about now (for rNexus)...
Still haven't seen a single item (except Celeborn) with rDisenchant...
On 6.5.2007 18:49 AnonymousHero wrote: Thanks :)
Yeah, I've kind of resigned myself to hanging around at my current Dlvl 80 (or thereabouts) until I find *some* kind of item with rDisenchant. There are a lot of unique critters who disenchant at this level, so I just tele them/me away (or flee the level if that doesn't work). It gets pretty annoying around vaults...
Re: rods of light: I usually use them to wake things up from a distance or to light corridors when there are critters which can't be detected with telepathy (vortices mainly). If there are better ways to do that, I'm all ears! (I haven't played O very much, so any hints appreciated)
On 6.5.2007 20:42 AnonymousHero wrote: Hum... I'm not a total noob, so I know not to stand around in a corridor if there are summoners or big breathers :), but usually it's nice to be able to shoot at, say, vortices in corridors.
Of course, you're right that one might as well do a bit of damage to a critter when waking it up... I just hadn't really thought about it. :)
I'm probably going to try to ditch the light rods just to see if I'm actually using them enough to justify the invetory slot.
Staffs of Detection also show the dungeon? That's news to me... I've been playing some other variants where they only show objects/monsters, so I just assumed the were the same in O. I'll have to test this... They probably won't replace my set of Object Location staves though... ObjLoc are easy to get a hold of and expendable so they are perfect for stairscumming :)
On 6.5.2007 22:31 AnonymousHero wrote: Last update for the day...
Found a Balance DSM in a checkerboard vault. Luckily I was able to get to it with judicious use of my rods of Teleport Away.
Haven't tried to figure out a better combination of gear than what I currently have equpped; that'll have to wait for tomorrow.
On 7.5.2007 00:08 Matthias wrote: The great advantage of light rods over the low damage ones is that the corridor stays lighted after the use. The damage of the elemental bolt rods is so low, it doesn't matter if you do no damage or almost no damage when waking them, but a lit corridor is a gread help, especially before getting ESP
On 3.8.2007 19:26 AnonymousHero wrote: Resumed playing this character after a long break.
FINALLY found Belthronding (at dlvl91!) for rDisenchant. I'll probably hang around 90ish a bit longer to see if I can improve the kit a bit...
I think I'm basically ready to face Morgoth modulo consumables. Does anyone out there know if it's safe to face him without rShards? Also, I'm not sure how much I'll need in the way of !o*Healing* and !oLife, but I'll certainly need more than I have currently :).
On 4.8.2007 02:25 camlost wrote: What you need for Morgoth is mostly speed, healing, and a good source of damage. You'll only need *heal* and life as foolproof escapes. If you are planning on meleeing him, then ?PD + !heal should work pretty well, as LOS will be pretty bad due to earthquakes.
You need some resistances, but not nearly all of them. If you want to be spoiled, read lib/edit/monster.txt to see what he can do. Mostly, he's a mean summoner with mean melee. Of course my experience is in S.
On 4.8.2007 10:33 AnonymousHero wrote: Well, I've taken out Sauron. Alas, he didn't drop The One Ring, so I guess I'll have to do without it.
I'm probably going to go after Morgoth with my current equipment. I'll just have to hope that the consumables I have are enough.
On 4.8.2007 13:35 AnonymousHero wrote: WINNER...
Decided to risk it and go for Morgoth... here are some observations:
- It's a BAD idea to have lots of rods when fighting M. Best to leave those rods at home. I didn't keep close track, but I'd guesstimate that M healed around 3-5 stars just from draining rods. Most rod effects can be duplicated by scrolls and I'd very much recommend that for the last fight.
- Bring more than ~35 phase door (which is what I had IIRC): As you can see from the dump, I didn't run out, but if I had been a bit more unlucky I might have.
- The lowest HP reached during the fight was ~300HP, so that doesn't seem to be much of an issue during the fight.
- +22 permanent speed is a bit low... My problem was that I was Gorged for large periods during the fight from drinking pots. That left me at +22 hasted (and gorged) which is a bit low. I even ended up at +12 at one point due to M's brain smash... luckily I was able to teleport away.
I think this has been the most difficult variant I've played (seriously) yet. I think the main reason is the scarcity of items: The lowered item drops means that you get a LOT fewer decent artifacts than most other variants. Also, randarts were few and far between -- I think the randart total was about 5-10 which is *way* too few IMO. So you spend a LOT of time scumming for stuff which should really be less rare. Oh well.
Now I just have to make up my mind as to which variant I want to try next. :)
