I fired up this character to test new giants, but with the start I'm having, I think I better pull back a bit. I just landed near a Frost Giant without cold resistance! Now that was scary and I teleported away in fear. I guess I'll do Orcs for the Ring of Ice and DQI for the Ring of Flames first.

Why the hesitation? My L6 reward was this rand-art non-replacement Battle Axe that totally kicks butt. L12 was Boots of Thievery, albeit only +1. Robin Hood dropped replacement Gauntlets and the VM dropped a replacement dagger that ain't so hot, so will get sold. Geez, my last character got nothing but crap ammo and weak weapons of slay orc for the first *seven* ego drops. This is quite a different experience, so I don't want to throw it away on super giants just yet ...

Oh, and a Hill Giant is definitely too much for a L12 Shadow-Fairy Samurai ... He died in fright! (And Frost Giants are probably 2x as powerful, so I didn't want to make it 2 in a row :)

Mission accomplished. I picked up some crazy Bloodmail in the process so now I think I might finally be ready for those nasty giants! Well, I guess I need to leave Cloud and Storm Giants alone for now ...

Man, the game is really hard on characters that don't have strong melee. Last level had 900+ monsters on it (with no farming) and The Hoard only accounted for about 100 of those. (Noxious Fumes were about 400 leaving 400+ normal spawns). 7 Critical Situations and 35 ?Teleports required as the battles kept getting away from me. AC 94? Useless! Ogres just beat thru that, perhaps a little slower than usual, but far quicker than either my melee or my blasts. I just need to push thru it, I guess, but I sense death is near.

Giants are tough, tougher than before. But their rocks aren't quite as deadly, so I think they are more fun this way. Plus, they are rather rare and only a fool would be hanging out in the Giant's Hall for stat potions. Even Camelot might be easier, accept I can't detect monsters comming except for staves of detect evil. And knights ain't evil!

I spent 150k for this crown of the magi and now I am just waiting on my first ring of damage. I really need to get some melee going before heading for the Barrow Downs.

On 8.10.2012 16:33 dzhang wrote:
I think you are way overpowered for Barrow Downs! I usually go in at CL 16-18, as long as I have about 200 HP and FA, and reasonable damage per round. Sure, I die every once in a while in that quest when I get double Nether Bolted, but time investment to get to Barrow Downs is small.

On 8.10.2012 17:07 chris wrote:
You should try the quest with a distance player. Melee is a very different experience than distance approaches. You pretty much get automatic 100hp nether bolts from Emperor Wights if you hit them from a distance, and spotting them a speed advantage is very risky!

This character could probably do it now, but I want to test Giants a bit more. The Downs will probably raise my power too much ...

I finally went to the Arena looking for a Granite Wall, but could not find one! Instead, I finally found a Magma Vein which I farmed for 170k gp and used the proceeds to buy a couple pitiful combat rings. With 110hp of melee damage, I felt more confident about the Barrow Downs. I still had one near death experience, even with +11 speed and nether resistance. Those curses can hurt quite a bit too, and Emperors always took 3 rounds or so to kill (At one point in the quest, you need to fight 3 in quick succession). No big takes, just more potions of Int and Wis.

Afterwords, I returned to the Giant's Hall were the game continues to be tough. I've finally scored a bit of detection (though not enough for Camelot) and have improved my stats and damage (87k for a ring of damage +12 ... Where does all the gold go?). At this point the only giants that really scare me are Storm Giants. When was the last time somebody said that? But you have been warned!!

Speed is elusive and even with Harden to the Elements, I can't risk carrying my lone staff (I need that for quests). It took 12 attempts to pick up Acid resistance for the Icky Queen, for example, so the spell is still *hugely* unreliable. And you are paying with hp, so usually you only can risk 1 or 2 attempts (still 26% fail, too). But the Icky was sleeping, and I didn't need double resist anyway.

OK, its official. I eat giants for breakfast :)

Storm Giants are still risky but I finally have enough AC to handle Mist Giants, Cyclops and Biclops. Plus, my 12d6 giant slayer really puts them in their place fast! I just wish I had 5 attacks, but I need to wait until L35 for that (I think I have enough stats now).

So, where is all the speed? I even put my uber +2 speed boots on the shelf since they weren't helping noticeably. Monsters just triple move me either way ...

Well, its certainly doable and only took 10.1 kKills to get myself powerful enough for Utgard. Actually, I'd still be a little fearful except I just picked up Stunning Blast, a *massive* game changer (Way OP, if you ask me). Still, Utgard did manage to launch a couple of rocks, forcing me to play it safe with a !Healing.

Its been a buggy game. First Lancelot stiffs me on my drops and then my presumed replacement art from the Giant's Hall was actually a scroll of acquirement. Well, I fixed both bugs and I guess it is only fair that game bugs bite me rather than other players.

I retract my Stunning Blast comment ... It seems I already raged against this power so that monsters that resist sound and stunning are not affected and monsters that are already stunned are immune (to avoid perma-stunning). There is also a saving throw. It might be OK ... we'll see. Perhaps uniques need an extra save?

I got my 5th attack and rolled the Pits, but now I don't want to melee any more. I'm somewhat at a loss for what to do next. Normally I'd head to Dragon Caves or to The Arena. The first is out due to my pact and the second was nearly killing me, though I was only +4 speed at the time. I might do better now ...
