I guess I better do some play testing myself, and yes, the 26 minutes on this guy has been about all I've been able to muster in the past week.
Lucky Kutar for their slick good looks, and I've picked Charisma at every chance so far. I think 18/38 will have to hold me for a while, and its time to start boosting Con.
The bad new is, I can't remember how many quests I picked with this guy???

We join our brave adventurer after completing the early game quest run.
Orcs were retaliating with arrows, which wasn't very troubling. And my damage has climbed up high enough now to make the quest comfortable. No infravision sucks, but I knew where the orcs were lined up and used my stealth and spear technique to clear the snagas. Then ?Light and I faced down all the orcs that woke up.
The range limitation is mildly annoying, but I am just leaning on my extended attack for the moment, which is range 9 last time I checked.
I picked up a nice cloak in the quest! Also an amulet of jumping which recharges very fast, and should prove useful.
Its been a good day for my Warlock ... Time to learn how many quests I chose. I'm guessing I picked the max ...

Oh ... My ... God!! Not only was Nar the Dwarf one of my pact monsters, he has the Mind Blast ability! So, I blast him with my spell, he retaliates, and whammo, I'm hallucinating. I barely ... oh so barely, pulled it off. I had two hallucinations, and they last long enough for the guy to regen quite a bit. In the end, he gets ticked off and starts panic healing, each time for an amount equal to 3 or 4 of my spells! Jerk. I got him, but I'm down to only 61hp as you can see.
The game is definitely harder!
On 15.11.2010 03:46 chris wrote: This aberration pact ain't no joke ... While struggling to kill the Fast Robin Hood, I must have accidentally blasted Nami. Now, Robin Hood was not too hard to kill, since he fire sometimes, but Nami is a fast, healing, thieving, b$*. I'm not sure why I every married her ... In fact, I don't even remember marrying her?
I'm still hunting Wutugu ... He is probably a pact guy as well, even if he is a 'P'. There are just soooo many human uniques, and lots of early 'h' too, it seems. Not many Dragons (1), Demons (?) or Angels so far. Undead are fairly common early on, but definitely, the aberration pact is the most difficult in the early game. I suspect other pacts might have it a bit easier since they can get their damage up before meeting many pact monsters ... I'm dreading Oberon :D
On 15.11.2010 04:50 chris wrote: [CL25:DL22] 02:07
I got The Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner 2 levels early, which means Gachapin is probably lurking nearby. Helm of Beauty, Amulet of Charisma (+1 is the best the towns can stock???), and another Charisma choice at CL25 have me doing some decent damage. Except against humans. And 'h' monsters ... Hmmm, I'll need to avoid DE Warlocks, as I probably can't one shot them.
I'm going to regret not picking Con last level, but I really am borderline against all the human uniques. I've score and extra d3 by focusing on my charisma so much ...
On 15.11.2010 15:44 chris wrote: [CL25:DL24] 02:12
Yup ... Hp down to 1. I drew Grendel for my DL24 quest, and finally hit on keeping an a big ogre between us in a corridor ... except that my AC is low because I can't wear armor without taking a hit to speed, and I got beat on pretty bad while finishing off Grendel. I'm not out of the woods yet, since he still has 30+ big 'O' monsters in his entourage, and the level is micro sized at 1 by 1.
Time turn off the small levels option, and stop diving for quests. Maybe I'll push it DL30 first and risk failing a few, since if I'm going to hang out, then I at least want some chance at picking up stat potions. Strength and Con are desperately needed.
On 15.11.2010 16:49 chris wrote: [CL29:DL30] 03:10
Ishikawa ... damn. This pact is kicking my butt :)
Anyway, the Barrow Downs was an object fest, and I also managed a !Chr, and !Int. Celegorm and Spell Power too. Mimic's had !Str and "Magi, but not much else. Ishikawa had super katana and Hammerhand :D But I have yet to melee, even with all these attack mutations.
Hammerhand is costing me d2 on damage dice, but I don't care. And I'm still picking Con for my next level up. I'm posting early since I just found a Magical Figurine of a Cyberdemon in the Magic Shop for 70k. But, to piss me off, none of the towns had a Capture Ball, so I need to wait. And the BM in one of the towns had a !Con which I would have preferred. Oh well ... Hopefull Mr. Cyberdemon will be fun once I can capture him!
On 15.11.2010 17:01 Djabanete wrote: Make sure your pets are set to "on" or you will have an unpleasant surprise!
With my Demon caster, I need to make sure never to type "m1g" when I mean "m1h" --- Summon Hostile Manes All Around You is really not the ideal emergency spell when you're in trouble :D
On 15.11.2010 17:13 chris wrote: I tried to capture my new Cyberdemon pet and got the message "You need to weaken the Cyberdemon more." WTF??
Ooops ... Birth Option: Allow Pets = No. Damn! This was a character I started a while back, and I just don't remember the birth options I picked. But that was a waste of 70k. Not to mention that Cyberdemon had two rounds in which to launch a rocket for 800hp damage on my sorry butt. I would lament my lack of shards resist, except even that would not have saved me. ?Teleport and count my blessings ...
On 15.11.2010 17:15 chris wrote: @Djabanete: Sure, now you warn me :) Its a birth option, so it can't be toggled. I'm also playing with no monster fighting, and no friendly monsters. Its just me vs. the whole freakin' world :D :D
I still say a trump caster with this option might be interesting. Summon Ancient Dragons. Kill. Repeat.
On 15.11.2010 17:55 chris wrote: [CL30:DL34] 03:53
I've killed over 300 pact monsters so far ... and 11 pact uniques!
I decided to risk the DL34 quest. Note, one can get Jack of Shadows at this point, a +45 speed monster with ready darkness storms! He's pact too, and would tick off easily, so I'd just fail that.
I got Ariel, and figured I could take her. I had a lone !Speed, but no !ResistCold and no !Healing. Her distance attacks are formidable, so snuggled up close to her (I still refuse to melee), hasted and blasted until down to 60hp. ?Teleport. Chugged !CCW, ?Teleport back and finished her off at 121hp. I didn't really know how much damge she could do, so I couldn't tell when she could finish me off ... No nice drops, just Lordliness which will not supplant Hammerhand and a couple of crap egos. The level had my first in dungeon stat potion: !Con :) That and my CL30 boost have me feeling pretty good, but I'm still a little weak for comfort. I'd also like to top off my Charisma before proceeding further.
The GHMMWQ quest was undertook by accident. I really need to check myself before descending ...
Gachapin is on this level, but I *still* don't feel up to that guy. Another 100hp and more speed, I guess ...

[CL31:DL36] 04:22 (Quest for Gorlim)
The unceasing parade of human uniques continues, and I am finally stopped in my tracks by Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir. With Ironman quests, I don't fail the quest by tucking tail and recalling back to town, but I am stuck until I can kill the guy. He has 1600hp ... I only do about 60 per round max.
Here is how the battle went:
First, I abuse line of sight with my Burst ability, which is nicely still full damage:
It is ticked off!
It cries out feebly.
You are less effective against monsters you have made a pact with.
Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir is ticked off!
Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir grunts with pain.
Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir shrugs off the attack.
Oops, Gorlim now has line of sight, watch out!
Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir grunts with pain.
Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir casts a mana bolt.
Yeah. Another Mana Bolt kills me :D
Fortunately, there are other dungeons to explore. I'll come back with more power next time ...

Yeah, that worked nicely. After reflecting a Water Bolt and then a Mana Bolt, Gorlim learned not to try casting spells anymore, and I just owned him, even if my damage output is mega biffed vs the guy.
I won't be able to pull that stunt if (when) I draw Jack of Shadows at DL38.

Hmmm ... I just noticed that Wild-Talents were being granted to me. Don't worry, I can't actually use them, but apologies to anybody playing a non-Wild-Talent class on 22 or 23. Just ignore the messages, they won't hurt you unless you are playing a Bard/Hex HM/ForceTrainer/MagicEater, in which case your character will probably become corrupted. I guess I better push that as a patch, now that I think about it. Stupid bug ...
So, on resuming this guy, I learn that Lucky no longer buffs charisma. So probably I would not have picked this personality, but I'll just make do. After upgrading an "Charisma and plopping down 110k for a !Chr, I'm back to where I was before damage wise (13d20 at the moment).
Also, this guy is doing Ironman Quests??? Well, Utgard-Loke is waiting for me at CL38. I'll get to him when I get to him, which will probably be a looong time. For the time being, the Anti-Melee cave is the place to be, and I'm running strong here. I could use some speed, but don't want my lone staff to burn up.
On 5.12.2010 00:44 Antiguard@gawab.com wrote: Oh that reminds me. When i played my Cavalry balrog: This charisma rework is quite painful for undeads etc ppl with shit charisma.n You cant get amulets or cheap potions and stat gain is long ways so starting is quite a pain. Also Eldricth horror boon is lot less relevant with hallucination / moronify nerf. Maybe reduce xp costs for such races since their boons got nerffed and Char penalty is rather bad now.

On 5.12.2010 21:04 chris wrote: Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. The only real use I see for shooting is something to do after casting Empowered Blast. Otherwise, blasts are going to be more deadly, no?

Blasts are going for about 192 at the moment (16d23) which is quite formidable. And the stunning effects are really nice. I even took down an Archon which normally I would think to be beyond me, but it was smoothly done. And the Anti-Melee Cave is *the* place to be, so I'm sure that helped as well.
I couldn't figure out why none of my pact monsters were friendly. In fact, I've been meaning to test this feature out as it is one way to equalize the Angel Pact. Fewer pact monsters means fewer friends to help out. Eventually, I had to go into the debugger to figure out what was going on, and it seems that when I first created this character, I was testing out all the no pets, no friends, and no monsters fight each other options, which are all birth options. So, I cheated and switched them all on :D I left Ironman Quests on, though, since turning that off really would be cheating.
At the moment, 1 in 5 pact monsters will be friendly. We'll see if this helps or hurts ...

As expected, the Jurts were the hardest part of the quest, but still not that bad. A single Gachapin proved difficult as well, unleashing a non-stop torrent of hydras, perhaps 40 in all? All this before I could hit him 5 times with Eldritch blasts to kill him, so he was quite berserk about spamming hydra summoning.
An Elven Cloak of Thievery and Frodo's boots give me respectable speed at last, but I have yet to spot a single source of disenchantment resistance all game :(
On 6.12.2010 00:05 dzhang wrote: I think I did this math somewhere else? Belthronding + extra shot from pact = 3 shots per round.
Seeker Arrow 6d4 (+10,+10) would do 3.6 * 3 * 46 = 497 damage per round. You're not going to get that range from blasts, and that's not even counting Slay Evil / branded arrows!
On 6.12.2010 00:09 dzhang wrote: Currently, you would do 4.72 * 1.76 * (13+9.5) = 187 damage with normal (+7, +7) arrows. Blast is at 192 damage, so it's higher, and has no miss chance, but arrows have longer range... I still think it might be useful!
On 6.12.2010 00:23 chris wrote: Don't forget to multiply by .65 for accuracy. That 500 end game damage is probably 350 at most. And you are assuming Belthronding ... I'd like it, but might prefer Brand for +10 speed if I had the choice. I guess I'm just not a big fan of shooting :(
On 6.12.2010 00:54 chris wrote: Also, I'm only 4.12x multiplier now :) I figure 106 damage with arrows counting accuracy versus 168 on the blast (16d20), but arrows are such a hassle. Plus, the Stunning is just awesome at the moment :D

A hairy encounter with a pack of greater demons, but I fortunately survived. A teleport put me 3 spaces from the top of my monitor, but there were 5 Greater Balrogs and a Nycademon, and 17 other U's lurking just off my screen. Scared the bejeesus out of me!
I'm up to 18d20 damage, and living off the stun effects. I haven't had time to test the confusing blast, but it fails at 13% at the moment, so I'll probably just use it sparingly for the time being.
I think warlocks need more abilities and more blast techniques :)
Also, I kind of like the Pact Monsters friendly change ... I've had a friendly Rinaldo a couple of times, and I decided to beat up a friendly Mandor. Of course, he swallowed 4 of my rockets and laughed ...
On 6.12.2010 15:00 chris wrote: OK, let me rephrase: I *really* like the pact friendliness change :) I recalled down to DL46 and what do you know, there is Jack of Shadows, my nemesis! Except he is friendly! Together, Jack, you and I could rule the world ... I let him avenge Tarzan by smacking Giganto the Gargantuan down to 0hp. Life is much easier this way :D

I finally got around to Utgard-Loke, and he was no sweat by this time. The Stunning Blast is waaaaay too powerful, so I'm cutting down its effectiveness (again!), looking for the correct balance. By the same token, Confusing Blast should be at least as useful as Stunning Blast. Actually, confusion resistance is the most common monster resistance, nearly 15% more common then even fire resistance, and more than 200% more common than acid or lightning resistance.
So, the changes I've made are as follows:
[1] You can no longer pile on the stun/confusion effects. Once stunned, there is no benefit to attempting further stunning. Once, confused, likewise.
[2] Durations cut drastically. Most effects only last for 2 or 3 turns.
[3] Stun always gets a save. Confusion gets a save if the monster resists, otherwise it always works (no sense making it weaker than regular confusion attacks).
[4] Monsters are more likely to save vs. confusion than vs. stunning.
All of these changes only effect warlocks, but I might move them out into the general population.
My next quest hangup was Shudde M'ell, but that was just due to a lack of disenchantment resistance. Eventually, a 1.5 hour super vault provided a suit of chaos dragon scale mail, together with an amulet of resistance (poison, too), that allowed me to feel safe about my stuff.
Bull Gates was annoying, being a pact monster, but not too bad. And now there is Hastur, which I will wait a bit before taking on.
