Slow early going, as none of the quests rewards proved useful, and then I found I could no longer complete the quests at all ;P Stupid thieves ...

I headed over to The Mountain without resistance, free action, see invisible, detection, or much of anything. I could no longer shoot as Mime disenchated my shooter and I was just too frustrated to scum it back up. Eventually, the BM stocked an excellent shooter replacement, some rings of damage, and my first potions of speed all game, so I did The Mimic's but there was nary an excellent object inside. That cost 2 !Speed, so was hardly worthwhile.

My last available scum was for Ishikawa, and that one finally paid off. After stiffing my last two characters, he finally put out, though I dare say the original katana is still more powerful, though not by much.

Thanks to the supreme power of Craft, I was able to complete the Barrow Downs. A few crappy arts and a few stat potions. I picked up the phial (confusion) so of course I made a go at phial #2. But I think the days of uber phials are over, sad to say.

I think I need to design a new quest now ...

I like the randomization a lot, especially in regards to the lights. They weren't powerful before except for the endgame ones and they weren't that interesting. Now it's actually cool to find a art light source and making Feanorian Lamps relevant is a big plus. You've managed to to make strangeband even wilder, no small feat.

Though I will miss having another chance at another Phial of Ea though.

Back to quests in Angband. Sangahyando drops PDSM and Alberich, who was no match for me even at -1 speed, dropped a +3 con rand art shooter. Sweet ...

On finding a nice chaos branded rand-art, I decided it was time to rework the chaos brand at last. I removed teleport other, earthquake and polymorph abilities, and decided to make the chaos brand stronger as well, while keeping in the random spirit. You should play and tell me if I went too far :)

Really, I do plan to pause Chengband releases shortly ... Perhaps 0.0.50 will be the last one for a while, barring some unforeseen nasty bug. I had to change about 1000 lines of commonly used code for the chaos brand tweak, so its possible I did something stupid!

But of course, I will keep playing :D

This character has had such a charmed life, I can't help thinking I've made the Craft HM too powerful. But finding PDSM so early really was a fluke. Not long after switching to Dara, my new Chaotic weapon of pure fun, I found this number:

The Bo Staff 'Spoils of Victory' (5d13) (+15,+15) (+3) {Cn(Cn}

Not *that* is awesome. At least for the Craft HM ... Oh, and 4th book really early, so now the fun can begin. Of course, the ultimate fun spells don't come until CL44 and then, finally, CL47. And I really need more intelligence by then!

Well Victor, you inspired me to tweak rand arts again. Also, I fixed a corpse bug in the Mine and hopefully that is why you were crashing. I don't like playing the Mine, but this guy killed quite a few foes here without incident, and I played a wizard mode test guy in the Mine for about 20 minutes as well (were I allowed monsters to fight each other too). Let me know if you see any crashes with 0.0.51 or later!

On 6.8.2011 17:18 kingvictory2003 wrote:
Heh yeah, I started to shy away from the Mines after way too many close calls. Can't believe I used to delve in there so much! Anyway, nice that you were able to find the bug--a corpse bug?!?! Sounds so random! Then again, so are most bugs no? :)

On 6.8.2011 18:12 chris wrote:

OK, I don't want to risk dying just to test my bug fix, so I cowered back to the lair, picked up some cool gloves and CL45. Now, I think I will dive to the bottom of the lair to look for Sky Drakes. I managed to kill 3 of them in The Mines, so it is doable!

I've sunk about 30 minutes into an uber vault on a special level (A couple releases ago, I made it so preserve mode characters get special feelings too ... This makes the game more fun for me :)

Anyway, the up shot was leveling up to CL47 for my capstone ability which is super powerful. I even managed to kill Fenris Wolf without breaking a sweat. But still, the vault seems impenetrable. Too many chasms and super deep uniques that can't cross them, so can't be led out. Also, Qzzlzzuup is inside.

Normally, I would surrender, but with that stupid blue special tag on the bottom of my screen, I can't seem to resist more effort!

OK, I'll let the cat out of the bag and post a dump in full buff. Polymorphing into golems is useful throughout the Craft casters career, but the bigger you get, the slower you get. The Colossus form now has a crushing -5 speed, but is still worth it in my opinion. I also toned down the AC bonus, which is still significant (also helped greatly by the Stone Skin spell).

Can you guess what the other powers are?

Why is it the nice tame changes I make to Chengband only seem to affect me? Damn, pure nastiness :)

I'm tweaking the allocator a bit again, after seeing lice on DL96. Now, and non-unique below L30 gets dropped once it is 50 levels out of depth. That should make things more fun.

Is a nest of 95 Bloodthirsters typical? It certainly was easy to handle and gave 10 or so artifacts including these nifty boots. They are lighter than the pair Gachapin gave, easing my encumbrance woes.

OK, discussion on Craft being too powerful:

[1] They can dual wield with the aid of an end game spell. However, accuracy peaks at about 50% with all buffs up (depends on weapon weight, though). Dispel Magic is guaranteed. You must also be in Colossus form for this to work (or your melee skill is too poor), and this form has a -5 speed penalty. This means that you probably need to wear 2 speed rings to compensate (at least with rand-arts turned on where there is no Feanor/Ringil/Brand and arts will cap at +4 speed generally).

[2] They can gain 4 attacks base with a spell. I'm OK with this. Hex gets it, and the melee approach needs more than 3.

[3] They can stack a temporary force brand on their weapons. Very powerful, and combos with mana branding. Balance is that is costs very high (my current build pays 21sp per strike!) and is instantly dispelled by any monster who can do so. You will gobble up all your spell points in about 3 rounds of melee (less if dual wielding) with this approach, so only Eat Magic guys could consider. The spell is too hard to cast for non-mages anyway. But with Eat Magic and Passwall, it is very powerful.

[4] They gain the new ability "Enlarge Weapon". This boosts damage dice of your wielded weapon, but comes with a penalty to hit. Takes dual wielding accuracy from 50% down to 30%, so makes single wielding required. Stacks insanely with weapons already dice boosted, and especially if you are stacking force brands and mana brands. Again, monsters will instantly dispel.

So, Craft can get some insane melee damage, but in true Craft tradition, are rather helpless against Dispel Magic. End game monsters resist all, so the Mana Branding combo stops working. You can try to keep up a force brand or enlarged weapon, but that too will be dispelled. So I think the Serpent will remain formidable.

And the amount of "sickness" depends on finding a weapon with crazy damage dice ... Like 5d13 for example, which is just about the highest I have ever seen. 5d9 on my trident is also the best I've seen for tridents, so this guy has had some wacko luck.

Still, I think it might be too much ... Its fun though :)

Current build: If monster resists base and accounting for melee accuracy, damage output is about 650. Better than a mana storm but less than hellfire. If the monster does not resist all elements ... well, things go quickly :)

Above when I said cheating I was referring to looking at the char sheet to guess the colossus powers through all the other craft buffs.

Maybe it will balance out since HM are the only ones that can cast the spells for their full effects.

Okay, I just noticed your damage latest output, wow.

Monsters will dispel. Overall, this form is much weaker than Demon Lord, but has higher HP, Fighting and AC. The -5 speed is huge, and really balances, I think (Demonlord is +5 speed, +25 all stats, Fire Immunity and much much more!).

Damage output is all about finding the right stuff ... Here is a more plausible kit, having found a nice, tasty Blade of Chaos pattern weapon. Damage output drops by almost 400!

So, perhaps my Craft changes are not so crazy as I thought?

I'm creeping up on Destroyer quest depth, and I have to ask: Is it worth it? I took out Wahha with just 4 charges from a _Healing, so perhaps it won't be too bad. If only 10 !Healing, I could live with that. But 20 is probably too much to spare ...

Geez, I'm almost to the point where I no longer need my PDSM. I've just been ignoring resists all game, choosing gear for speed and stats. But it looks like I could almost swap in my MHDSM 'Hades' ... I just need Chaos resist.

I finally have enough speed so that I could consider a ring of extra attacks. I just need to find a good one first :D

OK, Shuma-Gorath was amazingly bad ... Dispel Magic on first move, every move, or so it seemed. I spent the first 5 minutes buffing up, stepping next and getting dispelled. I guess it was a stroke of luck that Shuma spawned next to a wall. Anyway, that guy doesn't resist fire, so eventually I got a few rounds of attacks and my fire branded, force branded, enlarged weapon of utter annihilation did him in. It just took awhile, and I'm not sure what I will do vs the big J when I don't have the luxury of backing off to rest up.

So, for the Serpent, I will have to buff and take the dispel. Maybe things will look up once I score my +3 attack ring :D

Ewwww ... that did not go very well. 11 !Healing and 4 _Healing. I became gorged when trying to conserve healing after drinking 30 or so !CCW. Also, The Destroyer knicked open one of those wall opening trap rooms ... with Demons! A bunch of Star Spawn got loosed, and together with some recent "enhancements" I made for this release, led to some troublesome times indeed. I had to remove my speed shield too, for enhanced accuracy, despite my colossal form.

The the big guy finally fell. And that is with me able to use my buffs!! Well, 15 healing over all is low for The Destroyer, I guess. I probably save another 4 with my CCW's too. I've had characters sink 50 healing into that guy (usually with *lots* of staves, but I can't seem to find any??)

I don't think any hard quests remain. The Unicorn and Nodens were bugging me in R'lyeh, so I'll just march down to DL98. I've been meaning to bust Sauron, but he's tough in R'lyeh since the guy can't swim :D

I almost never am able to kill this monster, so probably, Craft is now too powerful :) He's got resist all, dispel magic, and one of his abilities is now very buffed up (although I was rather kind with frequencies, not wanting to kill too many characters with the change). However, his problem as I see it, looking back thru the logs, was a susceptibility to critical hits. With only AC100, he is easy to hit, at least for a big colossus. And for the Craft HM being all about damage dice, well, this was his undoing. When great hits double damage dice on top of all the other craft buffage, the result is pure pain. I really did not expect success when taking him on, but he kept showing up ;)

I'm still not up for Oberon, though. Actually, I might go with a slay evil diamond edge if (a) I can find a diamond edge and (b) I can find a good extra attack ring and (c) the RNG smiles on me when I try to Brand Weapon.

This was at the point where I took a bunch of stars off the guy and first thought the battle might be doable. From that point on, he tried healing himself every turn, but I out raced him. He also thru in a couple reflected mana bolts and a couple resisted hands of doom.

So, probably a fluke ...

Anybody have thoughts on making Rings of Extra Attacks "good objects"? If you ever noticed how rings of speed are frequently dropped by high level monsters, then you know what this means. Are rings of extra attacks so much more powerful than rings of speed?

(Granted, this guy wants one, but I've wondered about this disparity for years and now am finally in a position to change it!)

Ring of Attacks +2 from a vault, not a drop. But I did manage to get a drop, but it was only +1. Score 100+ rings of speed to 3 rings of extra attacks!

Oh ... My ... God. Oberon was the unholy spawn of satan. Most of that was due to my most recent change, which is pure evil! But, he doesn't resist acid (surprise!) so the battle was short, albeit very dangerous.

So, having found a Ring of Attacks +2, I see clearly now that things are OP. I think Enlarge Weapon will need to go ...

I wouldn't mind seeing more magic items (!, ?, -, _, =, ") get dropped by DROP_GOOD and DROP_GREAT monsters. Not too many of course --- you shouldn't be overflowing with high-end consumables --- but I don't think it should be completely out of the question for a purportedly "excellent" item to be generated as, say, a Potion of Life.

OK, play it while its broken! I think the next release will lose Enlarge Weapon. Force Branding needs to stay, as it is just way too cool :)

I think Oberon was actually a bit scarier then The Serpent, who did not dispel magic nearly as often as I expected. When he did, I was generally very low on mana anyway, and fixing to teleport.

@djabanete: I'm not sure what this change will do to distributions. I'm actually scared about letting Extra Attacks into the mix ;) But it had no effect on this guy ... Probably, it will for scumming the lair though, since while rings of speed are native to L80, extra attacks are native to L50!

I was thinking !Resistance are too scarce, but it as listed as:
A:20/1:45/1:80/1:100/1

Its hard to get more common than that! So, when it comes to object distributions, I don't really know what I am doing and will probably need to make changes conservatively. Its a good thought, though ...
