Cooked up another attempt at a caster, and here he is, Chaos/Nature.

I just had to post now after getting a coveted piece of loot after a few hours of dipping my toes in the dragon caves. A huge vault was generated, and the level feeling gave me horrible visions of death (equivalent of superb in vanilla). Well blimey, not a single method of object detection at hand, so I beat up a few local mature dragons and ogrillons, and one of the ogrillons coughed up a scroll of object detection. Doesn't get much more simplistic than that, but it sure did its job. Read the scroll, and my pulse ticked a bit faster when I saw in the lower right hand corner of the gigantic vault:

a Wizardstaff (3d2)

Of course, the entrance was completely on the other side of the vault (2 screens over), and it could be just a cruel joke, being a Wizardstaff of Slaying, instead of the mighty staff it turned out to be.

Whatever, I went for broke and blew through all 5 charges of my staff of destruction, then set to work with the spell once that was depleted. A great hell wyrm sitting pretty on top of the staff was rudely awakened by a cowardly teleport other beam, and Moander made off with Gandalf's staff of uberness.

Interestingly, my int is already at 18/*** without benefit of the staff, despite my pathetic 18/70 max base int, and I'm wearing the Robe of Incanus, which already has decrease mana consumption. I guess that begs the question if the two different pieces of gear were of the two different versions of Gandalf or not. Well, wizards from LoTR weren't known for austere efficiency, so redundancy isn't out of the question. Regardless, the staff will surely come in very handy once I find the Robe of Eternity.

Once again though, very slow going with the leveling, as compared to my melee characters. How do you do it, Chris? Macros and all. I'm needling my way through great wyrms, as my best attack spells such as fireball (89 dmg) at 15 mana, Blizzard (121 dmg) at 28 mana, and Lightning Storm (141 damage) at 25 mana can take off at best a little more than half the HP of a wyrm with a full run through mana, all the while eating revenge breath attacks or melee attacks. Eat magic?

My best efficiency spell that isn't doing too badly right now is, of all things, mana burst. At master level and with decreased mana consumption, it costs 4 mana for 3d5+51 damage. Great in combo with Sonic Boom at melee range, even though enemies resist stunning more often than not. Works after several attempts though.

You seem to be doing awesome! There is a world of difference between a High Mage and a Mage. The former is powerful enough to survive and blast thru hordes of monsters with their spells. The latter is not. At least not until CL50 when mana storm reaches 8% fail.

What I would generally do with a mage is to use the needle exclusively, not bothering with offensive spells. Craft works best for this once you have telepathy. So, begin by needling dragons on DL60 until you have good resistance coverage and are at least CL40. Then, power dive to the bottom of the lair and seek out a Great Wyrm of Law. Use passwall and fist of force to get it to summon a dragon in a box, and then use passwall and stone to mud to get your boxed dragon to summon more dragons in a box. Eventually, you will get a Sky Drake, and then the fun begins.

With the needle, passwall and word of destruction, you can *easily* hit CL50, and very quickly. The gear you will get will be phenomenal and the only caveat is how to handle the continual onslaught of great wyrms of space time. Just teleport and they usually follow. Then destruct. March back to your boxed dragons, destructing along the way. With this approach, you should rocket from CL40 to CL50 in about 2 hours, and once you are done, you can switch back to Nature if you like ;)

Clvl 37 @ 07:10

I always enjoy hearing about your elaborate schemes, Chris, and I'm sure that one works very well :)

I think, however, that all this discussion really boils down to the fact that magic really isn't terribly viable in the mid levels, where getting experience in a rather expedient fashion necessitates a consistent 200 damage/round or so, and magicians just run through their mana stores way too fast. Might I suggest a boosted mana regen rate for spellcasters? I think this would be a fun solution, as it would enable casters to use their primary attribute (i.e. spells) as they should, instead of *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* *BAM* ...etc.

Keep the current mana regen rate for hybrids, and you have a more distinct feel of pure casters aside from the few endgame damage spells, and 0% vs 5% (or 3% with mastery) failure rates.

On 27.6.2011 06:55 chris wrote:
I like the regen idea ... but first, I think I might move some of the spells up a bit:

Chaos: Magic Rocket from CL40 to CL35
Death: No change. Vampirism True comes early enough.
Daemon: Kiss of Succubus from CL40 to CL35
Crusade: Starburst from CL40 to CL35

I don't see why those spells come so late. Damage will start around 170 or so depending on the spell, and with the fail rates, they should become reliable by CL40 (vs. CL45 before). Thoughts?

Clvl 40 @ 09:48, Cloning Pits finished.

Man, I don't think I've ever waited so long to do the Cloning Pits, but pre-40, it would've been really rough without lots of attack wands/staves. As it was, I had Wrath of Nature >:) which really shined in the quest. It took the Its out in 3 casts all together, and the hordes of fire ants were quickly decimated by a couple of casts. Frodo was actually an upgrade, sad to say. Whatever, it has the +2 speed on top of stealth, which overall is better than my +3 stealth boots I was wearing previously.

I think those are good ideas, Chris--I'd also suggest lowering their fail rates so they become at least somewhat reliable when you get them, a la Lightning Storm. I actually started using Lightning Storm for its good economy relative to most ball spells, and also Blizzard against plasma hounds. Certainly useless in endgame, but they have their place in the mid game.

Items that boost mana capacity (by a percentage of your base mana) could help.

Allowing certain monsters to be vulnerable to certain elements (fire/cold/lightning) could help.

Providing more ways to enhance your spell damage could help.

Well now, quite a good number of staffs of mana storm decided to pop up, and a couple of uniques came to play in melee range, and soon regretted it (Eric and Ahtu). To be honest, Eric summoned Ahtu, who died to collateral damage from the mana storms, but I ran out of charges of mana storm before Eric was dead. He had maybe 3 stars left from teleporting away and stuff. I probed him, and found that he wasn't resistant to fire or cold. Okay. As I stupidly didn't have my wands of disintegrate or rocket on me, I had to go with Blizzard. Problem was that I had like 30 mana left.

Fortunately, a pot of restore mana was lying partway through the level, so I ran there, quaffed it, and played another few scenes of cat-and-mouse with the badly injured Eric, and hit him with maybe 9 more blizzards before he fell. I weathered about 3 packs of summoned monsters during this time, but *destruction* took care of them (Eric was kind enough to teleport away after summoning in each instance). Where Eric usually isn't so tough, he gave me an epic battle this time, and it was actually quite fun. He dropped Crimson for my troubles.

At 14 HD, half-titans have the most delightful HP pool of all. Of course, the other side of the coin is their +155% exp penalty, which is fully warranted.

Nonetheless, in the trudge to 50, a LOT of good loot has shown up. With INT and CON maxed even without benefit of the rings of power, I've been bouncing between Narya and Nenya as the situation warrants.

I've also never, ever had so many rods of healing, or staffs of mana storm before. Also on my 3rd scroll of artifact creation, waiting for another pair of dragon boots with resist nexus on them. Or else, Feanor :D that would be a *great* solution to my nexus resist hole. The first pair of dragon boots with nexus resist got the artifact treatment, but is less than stellar.

Holy cow! Just updated to 0.0.37, and I have to say I was immediately struck by my mana pool :D

I think this will work well, Chris. With the cost of top-end damage spells, I would say this should be less frustrating to have to keep running from deeper uniques to rest up.

Clvl 50 @ 16:52

That took a while to get to 50, as it always does with a half titan. But 0.0.37 really sped things up, and props again to Chris for the awesome changes.

As it's been a while since I've played a pure caster, I'd have to agree, Chris, that the endgame spells are good right where they are in terms of power and cost.

As much as I hate to suggest a small nerf right away, I think spell capacity could be reduced to +8% per pval instead of +10%.

Also, finally being able to cast mana storm with some efficiency, I definitely think melee needs a bit of a buff again, on the order of 15% or so more damage. I think the increased damage resistance of enemies really has weakened them in the endgame a bit too much.

Hmm that's odd...I don't remember getting the electricity aura mutation. Maybe I accidentally drank a potion of polymorph, as unlikely as that is? I'm pretty sure I didn't cast polymorph self, as I didn't even bother to learn the spell, and half-titans intrinsically resist chaos.

Unless failing chaos spells has a chance to give you a mutation as well...

Congrats on CL50.

For the spell capacity, 8% sounds fine. However, having a mage actually find Gandalf is rare, so most mages won't be so lucky :) Actually, one of my worries when adding this stuff would be to unbalance the end game. I'm trying to improve the mid game for mages with Spell Power and Spell Capacity, but this inevitably translates into a more powerful end game for a class that already can "dish it out." And for Spell Power, I find that my mages can't afford the hit point drop until the end game anyway (e.g. going from 480 to 310hp for my current mage was out of the question!)

Failing Chaos spells not only gives mutations (expect to pick up a few during the final battle) it can also disenchant your gear despite your having disenchantment resistance!

And finally, melee. Well, I was against that change initially, and already biffed it once. I'll look into some sort of redress again. As an example, if your damage output reads as 500 damage per round, you need to realize that max accuracy is about 70% and often 65% is more realistic, at least versus the big AC opponents like the Serpent (AC 175). So, damage before reduction is 350 at best. Factor in a 20% damage reduction and you are down to 280 damage per round. Of course, dual wielding Behemoths like warriors, craft rogues, etc can suck this up, but what about something like a ranger? Or playing with a weak race like a Shadow Fairy? Well, I'm open to ideas ...

I decided to finish it before I went crazy looking for Vilya, or Feanor.

As I didn't do a good job of clearing uniques, and didn't hit a single dungeon unique with the execption of the Minotaur of the Labyrinth, the Serpent had quite a selection of allies to choose from. First pick was Great Cthulu, who of course got the destruction treatment. A few packs of greater undead, dragons, and cyberdemons later (he was down to 3 stars by now from mana storms), he decided to call another dungeon unique to his side.

Azog came to his call, looking fierce as all hell, but that's about it >:)

After I picked the two storied artifacts out of the smoking pile that was the Serpent of Chaos, I went to the arena for unfinished business with a certain little flowing blob of molten metal with a smiley face.

I hung up the gear, and grabbed a Forgotten Realms book and headed off to the Telmora Cafe to enjoy retirement.
