z_o_z, I like your Android Time Lords ... interesting idea. So, here is my own. First go, and the thieves quest had some Broad Sword that gives 73k construction points. What could it be? CL23 in 2.5 minutes ... not my fastest android start ever, but it will have to do.
BTW, in the shortest variant maintainership in history, Chengband has already been abandoned. Anybody want to take over?
On 16.6.2011 15:38 chris wrote: [CL23 : Orc's Q] 00:28
I really should have picked more early intelligence. Haste Self is a CL23 spell, but fails at 54% ... I really don't risk it. But at +6 base speed, and with a handy Time Spurt, I should do OK. I just need some excellent armor to boost me up to CL25 so that I can pick Int for a boost ...
The Sword was Orcrist, and I blew all my early money for a 9.3k ring of damage. To replenish my gold (so that I could start buying ?Recall, ?Id, ?Teleport and !CSW), I did the Orc quest. With horrible stealth, I was minutely concerned, but I spammed Haste Self for success before entering the quest, and, gee, +21 speed really helps :)
Back to Angband to run the early quests, probably to DL20 or so, hoping for some construction points ...
On 16.6.2011 16:34 chris wrote: [CL25 : DL18] 01:03
3k construction for The Cloak of Merry. 120k construction for an Ethereal Cloak of Stealth ... That just ain't right ;)
I picked up a baby white dragon and evolved it to ancient. I think, for the sake of balance, a pet should have a chance of going hostile upon evolution ... Anyway, Ancient is the best I can do, though I checked that at CL23. I can get CL26 now, but I doubt that will give me an Ice Wyrm ...
On 16.6.2011 17:17 chris wrote: [CL29 : Mimic's Q] 01:30
I got my Ice Wyrm at last. The Mimic's Quest had Tetsu-geta of Flame, which normally I would never consider using, except it is something like 300,000cp and popped me all the way up to CL28. I swapped in my Ethereal Cloak for CL29, and that proved enough to advance my dragon to the final state of evolution.
Now, I need more dragons :)
On 16.6.2011 18:42 chris wrote: [CL33 : Barrow Downs] 02:22
Before looking for more pets, I decided it was time for Sting. I barely pulled it off, since I forgot to bring 30+ ?Teleport, and only had 17 instead. It took 16 scrolls before I finally managed to enter the 4th and final chamber, which as fate would have it, was the one were Sting was sequestered. Lots of bad monsters, in there, and a Seraph battling some undead so it was probably too crowded for the teleport code to find a spot for me. In the end, if I didn't have a couple wands of teleport other, I would have failed the quest. And without that 17th ?Teleport, I probably would have died. Shame too ... cuz Sting is darn nice and this character is proving fun to play :)
Then, on to the Barrow Downs, stocked up with 6 _Perception, fully charged. I forgot about the extra Emperor Wights, and I nearly died being surrounded by 2 of them at once. Those 100hp nether bolts hurt when you only have 300 or so hp. And lack of *any* detection really sucks. I picked up 2 _Detect Evil in the quest, so I'll carry those around from now on.
Merry's replacement cloak was a winner, though now I lack Confusion resistance. I think I'll carry Merry for a swap since this cloak is worth 800,000cp and Merry is only worth 3,000cp.
And on the way back, the BM stocked a +4 con rand art shooter :D
On 16.6.2011 20:01 chris wrote: [CL35 : DL33] 03:16
I worked up to 200k gold, and scoured the various BMs for a day or so to pick up a nice suit of nexus resistance armor (Nexus resistance is mandatory, IMHO, at this point in the game, and is probably the only resistance I won't play without. Later on, Disenchantment resistance becomes my favorite, but not until I get some uber gear).
So I can swap in a confusion ring for my nexus ring, and stop carrying Merry about. Plus, the armor boosted me up to CL36 which is nice. But with encumbrance, I decided it was time to give up my Tetsu-geta, and I am down to CL35. But still, this is a good level. Haste self is basically fail proof at this point, and I'm clocking it a +31 speed. I guess Sting is a bit weak though ... Only 207 damage per round and I'm not that great of a fighter. I'm tempted to go look for Ishikawa in the Castle.
Also, I'm holding up a bit for Stat Potions. I've scored 3 so far in Angband (and another 3 in the Barrow Downs, which is why I so love that quest :). Also, the level boosts allowed me to keep choosing con, so I am finally at 18/01 base, ready for that next killer boost to 18/50+ (yeah, right)!
So, at this depth, I don't need pets and they just slow me down. Sorry, Scatha (my Ice Wyrm), but you can just stay at home and play with the townsfolk until I return ...
On 16.6.2011 22:48 chris wrote: [CL34 : Cloning Pits] 05:08
I decided the time had come to test my luck for Shiva's boots. I went in around 500hp, Very Good stealth, +31 speed at CL35. No pets. No detection other than _DetectEvil. 11 !Healing.
I figured with my humongous speed, I could dash for the Bokrugs, and take them out (~237 damage per round with Sting). I could, except that my Int got diminished, and something cursed my uber cloak, which knocked me down to CL34 and cost me 3 points of speed. Yikes! On the plus side, I regained +2 Str, Dex and Con (Time Lords trade fighting stats for speed at CL35 and CL45). So I bounced up to 550hp or so, which was nice, and my damage output increased.
After that, the quest was fairly routine. No moron. No Its got loose and only one Gachapin escaped. But boy, that one Gachapin proved troublesome, as it got hung up on a fire moat and began hydra summonging. So, I killed the Queens first and was resting up when a Maulataur popped out of the queen's corner and got a nice jump on me. I reflect and have ~150AC, but still, I had to quaff a !Healing. In the end, I mopped up, and then teleported away Gachapin's hydra army, and made a mad dash to finish him off with melee. Its good to be so fast :)
No big takes. Hammerhand, Hithlomir, Twilight, Lotharang. And Frodo's boots. Well, I'm still doing OK, and Frodo's boots give +2 Str which is pretty nice.
On 17.6.2011 00:29 chris wrote: [CL37 : DL44] 06:24
OK, I really need to park it here until some form of telepathy shows up. I was pretty sure that Bull Gates was beyond me, especially as I just switched to full size levels :( Also, my first vault, a Troll Pit, and countless other monsters, and my only heads up for the Bull was being surrounded by stat draining exploders! Well, I had some _DetectEvil, but I really needed to conserve those (Used 23 charges out of 28, so I did OK). The first priority was to clear the level, except for the vault, which fortunately, was a permanent wall variety (with a single door entrance). No sense teleporting the out of depth monsters (Bile Wyrm, for example) until I gave Bull my best shot. So, 400 - 500 monsters slain later, and I'm starting to make a dent in the level! I had a half dozen encounters with the thief, but he quickly steals and hides so, pretty much, you have to clear the level so that you can hunt him down before he regenerates all his hitpoints back.
Stat drained and wounded, I finally got him! He was apologizing for MS Dos as he ran away, and I was blinded so I didn't chase. !CCW and wait for him to recover his courage ... Score! Nothing but Thengel and 3 spellbooks for my troubles though. Fortunately, I had found quite a few stat restore potions while slogging thru trolls, so the stat drain was minimal, and I think I am now ready to face that vault. There is an 8d8 Heavy Lance inside that I wouldn't mind owning ... especially if it has a poison brand!

Gee ... I wonder who that was. The only monster at the moment that is faster than I. Fortunately, that Darkness Storm was targeted one square off and he only lobbed one. 2 Darkness Storms kills me! He's not even evil, so I think I'll switch to that Amulet of the Magi that has esp human for the time being ...

OMG!!!! Balance Dragon Scale Mail in the BM!!! 390k gold and I only had 40k or so ... but I had a boat load of spell books, and quite an arsenal of artifacts. So I sold nearly everything I owned. I was fixing to sell Zantetsuken and Fiona when I crunched the numbers and realized I actually had plenty to spare. I actually had sold Merry (only 5.4k?) so I just bought it back for 14k. I need that confusion resistance.
3,400,000 cp or so for the BDSM, and now I am CL42. I knew that shield of resistance would come in handy :)
On 17.6.2011 05:05 chris wrote: [CL47 : DL50] 08:45
After a long stay at DL45, I decided to spend some resources and do a few more quests. I figured this would be my best shot at Thranduil ...
Well, Garm was pretty straight forward. My only mistake was after picking up all the goodies and recalling to town, I accidentally dropped Sting off at home leaving me without a swap weapon for quest #2: Madame Debby. Damn. Well, my Beam Cannon did her in, but I had to perform a risky teleport half way thru. Quest #3 was Shudde, and when the dust settled, special cesti and a a special hard leather cap survived my auto destroy options. Thranduil at last!!!
...
Nope: Sam. Damn, I forgot about that one. I guess that completes the hobbit artifacts, as Garm dropped Bilbo, which is nice, but BDSM it ain't :) The Cesti were Fingolfin, though, and I'm sitting pretty at CL47.
I've gone thru 2 !NewLife so far, both early on trying to get an above average Int. It doesn't look like I'm gonna see another potion anytime soon, so I decided to drink up my waiting stat potions. The -4 Str, Dex, Con is pretty harsh for this class, and I'm not sure the extra +6 speed is worth it. I'm +33, but +27 ain't that different, and I'd rather have the +4 fighting stats at this point in the game.
On 17.6.2011 05:11 chris wrote: BTW, the extra +6 speed will make a difference later on once Dispel Magic becomes commonplace, but that is quite a while off. We're talking +18 vs +12, and that is quite a difference.

I fell off the contribution train after RL heated up, and it's gonna get much worse for the next year, then cool off after that. I haven't given up on my stale ideas for Cheng, and as the only constant in the world is change, who knows that the Cheng fire might burn in you once again :)
Finally, it's always fun to see the speed at which you manage to make wrecking ball characters in such a short playtime.
Carry on!

Myself, I play Cheng from time to time --- in Vanilla Town mode --- but I always die so I haven't really been uploading characters. I've been playing random characters, lots of fun but not too hardy.
Good luck with the Time Lord! Hope you take home another Crown of Chaos.

This was a tricky decision. With innate 18/130 Str and Dex, my fighting was pretty decent, and I stood a chance of using my android rockets (29% fail). However, my Con was 18/70 and Int 18/90, and I have no chance of casting high level spells. Time Essentia is too costly and fails too high to be reliable, plus it runs out quickly, so it really is not getting much use. Remembrance becomes uncastable once my Int gets significantly drained ... So, I figured I wanted Con and Int higher. In the end, I probably messed up. I lost 6 points of Str, 5 points of Dex, my Int remained unchanged, but I did score the 18/130 innate Con along with a 10% increase in life rating. So now rockets are out of the question and I still can't cast high level spells :O But rockets taking all my sp and then costing 60hp a throw was probably not such a hot idea after all anyway.
And still *no* detection. Well, I only spotted Jack once so far, and that was indirectly (As in "It casts a Darkness Storm! You are blind, etc"). So, I figured I might as well give him a go hoping for his cloak. On my first trek down to DL42 of the Castle, he was bottled up in a weak weak checkerboard vault (The kind with traps and crappy objects, but permanent walls around every square). His darkness storms still hurt, but no longer blinded me. With my high AC and his low level, he also was unable to steal from me, so I just pounded on him while he healed every turn, and in the end, I eventually got him ... *and* *his* *freakin* *cloak* !!!! Yes! 5 minutes before this, I scored my first -Detection (I guess I'll do the Vapor Quest now, too ... I wasn't sure about scumming for mutations). 5 minutes after this, I score a rand-art sword with esp evil. Damn RNG is taunting me ;)
So, finally, I can see monsters coming! Boy, what a change that makes :D
