I've started to play Angband a bit more lately and this is my latest character. I had a few scares in today's game but was able to escape from them. Still alive - still alive...

Just killed Lagduf, and felt that it would be a good idea to upload a new dump.

You can start descending a bit more. Many people will go down so fast that MaxDepth is (considerably) higher than their Level. Even if your not willing to be that drastic you can go down to dungeon level 10-15 without much problem. Remember that the deeper you go the better things you will find in the dungeon.

You seem to be carrying some means of healing already, that is good, always do that. You also have scrolls of phase door, good, add some scrolls or a staff of teleportation and it gets even safer.

Be on the lookout for things that give you different resists, see invisible and free action. They will all become necessary as you descend.

Good luck, and remember that running away is sometimes the best way to stay alive.

Since my last dump, I've replaced my main gauche with a scimitar that does less damage per round, but gives the 4 basic resistances, free action, and see invis. As for teleportation, I usually use my Words of Wisdom book's Portal spell for that instead of my Phase Door scrolls - the Phase Door scrolls are more of an "out-of-mana escape." In fact, I rely mostly on potions instead of spells for healing in order to have mana for escapes.

If you rely on portal to save yourself and it has a 5% failrate and have to save yourself 20 times, chances are that you'll die. Always try to use failsafe escapes.

How did one group of nexus hounds manage to mess up the character this badly? If anyone knows how to get that 18/90 back where it belongs - in Strength - without looking for more nexus hounds, PLEASE let me know! Thanks!

In other news, I've played a lot since my last dump. I've also been on a unique-killing and orc-killing spree - that is, until I met those damn nexus hounds! I did farm 50' for several hundred thousand turns after finding my first artifact in order to refresh the black market's stock - I wanted a see-invis ring to replace the see-invis I had lost from my old weapon - and gained a level while doing so, so the depth for reaching level 24 is not a mistake. I also had several run-ins with vampires around turn 2,100,000, so reaching level 27 three times is also not a mistake.

At this point, this character appears to me to be a dead man walking unless I either:
a) learn to play him as a mage
b) get that 18/90 back in Strength

Yeah, usually I just give up at this point. :|

This happened to me a couple times around dlvl 40 when I first started playing. I'm not sure if you were surprised by the hounds or if you chased them, but a general rule of mine is: Never fight hounds. It's not worth it. Most of them have nasty powers, and none of them drop anything (as far as I know).

You don't have to kill everything in the dungeon to win :)

I chased them, thinking they could only teleport me. Man, was I wrong!
