A Magic-Eater playing as a pure caster. Don't laugh! It is possible :)

Actually, my intent was to use hobbit archery skills to augment my chronically inadequate magical attacks. But, somehow, I've managed to do just fine without resorting to this. In fact, I lucked into an early Robe of the Twilight which I was quite happy to actually use, until some town visitation revealed a Wand of Dragon's Flame which I absolutely *had* to get. I even charged it up to 11 somehow, but it still fails near 50% so its not really that good. Better than a magic missile, though.

Havoc fails at 76%. Dispel Evil fails in the mid 50%. Even speed fails above 40%. Hopefully, these things will improve with level, though I don't really know the formula for fail rates. Intelligence counts, but I think there is actually more to it than that.

DQI yielded +3 speed, for which I am eternally grateful. Now, I think I want Azog's Ring of Ice ...

Ok... this is just weird... I just started a (patient) Hobbit Magic-Eater too because I was tired of the Blue-Mage. Except one difference... I keep dieing. :)

I began by eating my magic missiles and buying a pick. I then dug for gold until I could afford utilities and more firepower. Though, you need to adjust your tactics a bit to account for the new shop restocking code.

I probably did about 6k this way and had 30+ each of magic missiles and stinking cloud, plus all the utilities I could afford (enlightenment, detect evil, detect traps). Don't bother with teleportation yet as it is simply to darn expensive and scrolls are cheap and work better too!

Still, you can't kill much, so you need to play an avoidance game until you have enough firepower. For example, by the time I met Orfax for my L6 quest, he was soooo far beyond me. I could only do about 10 damage at the time and he has an 8 star healing spell which he gladly spams at will. I'm really puzzled as to how I killed him as he didn't come surrounded by kamikaze yeeks as I would have liked. And I still don't think I can kill Nar ...

A 54% dispel evil is not a wise way to take on the Barrow Downs! It worked OK for the first two packs, but not so good versus Emperor Wights and their posses! Instead, I had to lean on my Dragon's Fire, Fire Balls, and Acid Balls, destroying plenty of loot. Still, the take was very nice :)

1% Dragon's Flame. In fact, 1% everything except Havoc (55%) and Dispel Evil (21%).

Go, Bungo!!!

DL40 is so freakin' hard, I really don't know how I am alive. I'll feel better with nexus, dark and chaos resistance and at least 500hp, but that is not likely to happen any time soon. In the meantime, I court death!

Rod of Healing fails 32% and I am now up to 18 Dragon's Flame. I really want some Drain Life, though. Without intending, some recent changes have made things easier for the Magic Eater, including moving some device depths up as well as giving a steal life effect to drain life. This should help out quite a bit, though experience has shown that 80hp healing is quite situational.

Bungo Power!!!!

After playing sans telepathy, sans detect monsters, sans darkness resist forever, I finally ran into Jack. At least I assume it was Jack ("It casts a darkness storm" (tm)), but he only had 1 darkness storm readied for my +23 speed butt. Still, at nearly 300hp a pop, unresisted darkness storms from a +45 speed monster that starts showing up around L40 is highly annoying, and I quickly shuffled in a ring of light and darkness resist to avoid an outright insta-death. Darkness resistance is more important than any other resistance at this stage until you gain some means of detection, and I finally scored a telepathic helm. So, I'm back to tempting fate :)

I can't handle L40 monsters, but the good devices are at L50 and L60. Heck, _Healing is native to L60, so probably I should work the Dragon's Lair instead. Its probably safer, too.

I also scored some *destruction*, which is extremely convenient!

On 18.1.2012 22:12 chris wrote:
[CL36:DL60] 09:08
After blowing up 5 items in a row, including disintegrate, *destruction*, 2 dragon's breath and a dragon's flame, I checked the source code to see what the odds are and discovered 1 in 9 chance at worst. Even then, you get a 25% of just draining the item. So, my odds were (1/9 * 3/4)^5 or about 1 in 250,000. But this is typical for me and magic eaters ... sigh.

So, I'm playing really conservative now. I won't attempt to recharge healing and am happy to get 2 charges at a time. Ditto with *destruction*. But rockets will still require some risk taking, as you only get 1 charge from 4 after the first drain.

But its not too bad as I have enlightenment already, and am willing to spam the top of the lair for as long as it takes :D

Care to wager on how long my tiny hobbit can stay alive at this depth? With only 577hp, I'm guessing no more than an hour or two, and only if I avoid *all* battles. I really wish *destruction* wasn't so weak :(

Still, I crave Rockets. I'm not sure why, since they will just blow up anyway. Perhaps I shouldn't eat them?

On 19.1.2012 16:58 chris wrote:
[CL38:DL86] 12:42
Rockets!! I risked a recharging of course, and decided not to push my luck when the wand charged up to 7. I'm willing to scum quite a bit for resources, but I think I have pushed my luck long enough down here. Now, its time to return to the dragon caves for some experience.

Healing is all the way up to 41! But what I really want are the rods since those heal 500, but I've only managed 3 so far.

I've found plenty of spell power but don't think I'll be able to manage any with this build. I still need another +5 con, and that seems hard, let alone finding +9 more con (for +16 total). I'm really not sure how people manage Beruthiel, and I don't regret that that won't even be an option for me.

I lied!! I just could not resist the power lure of R'lyeh! In the end, I landed on a level with a Bubble Vault and *loads* of goodies. Wowzers :D

Here is me after the fact, having *identified* everything in town, and shuffled equipment the best my tiny brain can manage. I can fit spell power after all, but I will quickly go to a second ring of speed for the time being as I am too darn slow. Look at all those amazing goodies :)

The vault was *extremely* risky. Hardest was Mephistopheles that kept commanding me to return and pummeling me down to 200 or so hp. I was attempting "Quake and Take" tactics, but as you can see, that no longer works so well. Plus, the level had the Unicorn and the Destroyer, both of whom turned out to quickly pick up *destruction* immunity. Still, I *had* to burgle the vault, and ended up triumphant! About 10 runs thru my meager stash of earthquake charges, resting 1000 turns between bouts (out of "Command to Return" range, of course), then back at it!

Boy, that was a game changing experience!

Here's the kit I finally settled on. Nice melee. All resists. Poor speed.

I took the DQII ?ArtifactCreation and used it on my simple dragon gloves and was richly rewarded! Heck, I can even resist the elements these days :D

Melee is for the weak :)

I'm slowly starting to kill stuff, but I have a long road ahead yet. Rockets are up to 15 charges, Disintegrate 14, Mana Storm 14 (and I can still do the Volcano). I take risks with Rockets, trying to eat 7 charges at a time and it has worked out well so far. My last delicious feast netted me a whopping 4 charges! Wow!!

Tiamat was fairly easy to kill, though I really need to level up a looong way yet before Mana Storm gains some semblance of reliability. Pazuzu was hard, as he double Psychospeared me twice during the battle. In the end, he killed himself with a mana bolt which I reflected back his way. Fool :)

Raou was hard for me, as he has the triple combo Ticked Off, Command to Return, Hit for Heavy Stun. Not a nice experience, and I might start carrying Phase Door and perhaps even !Healing.

Only 77 uniques down. Like I said, a long road remains ...

Hey, I managed Wahha-man! Actually, for the Magic-Eater, this is no great achievement, but does serve as a reminder that Phase Door is really necessary now. Instead, I just teleported him away when he got close. 15 rockets, 13 disintegrate, then a risky 31% fail Mana Storm for the final blow. I don't quite have enough resources for Pappa just yet, but ESP Nonliving really helps me see him coming. Once I hit 30 rockets and 30 disintegrate, I'll give it a go, but I'd really like Mana Storm to be more reliable too. Perhaps I'll just use some !RestoreMana if I lose patience.

Without Levitation, the Volcano is not accessible :(

Here we go again ... Anyone care to point out the optimal equipment set for me? I can't make heads or tails of what to wear :)

OK, after much contemplation, here's my kit. I give up Spell Power, but even so, I barely have enough speed for the end game. I usually like +35 base so I can match the Serpent after Dispel Magic, but this will do. All resists. And I even cover levitation at last. Geez, I was so loaded down with artifacts last trip that I was constantly drowning in the deep waters :)

Melee is not an option. Stealth is poor. Sigh ...

Ah, I see regeneration helps the Magic Eater. Sweet :)

I have a strict "No Vaults!!" policy ... except when there is a wand of rockets inside!

Man, getting thru vaults at this depth is extremely hard, often requiring 40+ surgically applied destructions. Still, I need the rockets, so I persevere. At 29 charges, I probably have enough now but my experience is still inadequate. As are my lowly hobbit hitpoints ... So, more of the same :)

Leveling up is tedious in pure caster mode, and especially with the Magic Eater. I can basically kill one or two monsters per trip down and then I am out of my premium firepower. Regeneration helps, but generally I just destruct whatever I see and only fight deep uniques.

Closest call all game was a wake up call for me. I was tip toeing around the Norsa for some magical goody when it woke up, breathed frost for 80% of my hp, and then the Unicorn popped into view from off screen and cast Antimagic. I fortunately resisted the attempt or you would have had a nice death dump here! Since then, I now carry scrolls of teleport as well as potions of healing. Probably rods of teleport other would be prudent for Nodens too.

With hitpoints this low, I can't really risk Cantoras or Oremorj. I tried to kill a Cyberdemon but it was too risky, as even a resisted rocket brought me down into the 200s.

Destroyer down. 41 rockets. 30 or so Disintegrate. 20+ Mana Storms. But only 1 !RestoreMana required.

Ticked off every turn, the Destroyer responded with Disintegrate (250hp) for the most part, although occasionally he tried out a mana bolt which never got passed my reflection.

19% fail Mana Storms are still too risky, and I want access to these for the Serpent since summoning shuts down rockets. And I have heard a rumor from a reliable source that the Serpent has been known to summon aid once in a while ...

So, CL50 is a must. I feel much better now that I have more than 800hp, but I will never break 900hp. Ah well, hobbits are tiny :)

Another Serpent bashing! I kept waiting for him to kill me, which is quite possible, if not likely, given my ultra low hp. But he only got me down to the low 100's twice during the battle. Uber annoying was the Antimagic which worked three freakin' times. Ah, well. That's what the ?Teleport and ?*Destruction* were for.

So, CL50 isn't a must ;) (See your own second last post).

But congrats on the win! Now go win with the Sorcery HM, or did you already finished that one?

Yeah, my Mana Storm was 16% fail, so I mostly just used 0% fail rockets for the Serpent. Mana Storm is nice for fighting next to the J after he summons, but rockets also work. In the end, I had 30x the firepower I needed thanks to Restore Mana, so no need to bother with the storms ...

I'm soooo tired of rockets and crave powerful melee, so my Sorcery HM will have to wait.
