Another day, another crazy diamond edge. Yawn ...

Man, Magic-Eaters start slow. It took me til L25 to get a second attack, and then stat drain put me back down to 1 forever since I couldn't afford to restore. Lots of earling digging and wilderness ambushing really put this class to the test. You simply don't have the firepower to get thru an ambush if you can't melee!

But a lucky extra shots sling turned the tide (rand-art with +13 damage too!) and shooting pellets is vastly superior to any early magic devices. I even picked a good race/personality combo but the Magic-Eater can't really melee early on it seems. Maybe a demigod?

Anyway, I took a suicidal run at the downs at L26 with 210hp. I figured being undead and all, I would resist nether, right? Nope! And those Emperor Wights are terrifying from a distance. By this point I could melee for 60 damage (30 counting accuracy issues) so I tried fire balls. But I was only +2 speed with no haste, and there's nothing like getting taken down to 6 hp followed by "The Emperor Wight tries to cast a spell but fails". With Nether Bolts and Cursing both doing 100+, I wonder how I made it? Indra and then Jack didn't help, but hitting L30 did as I picked Con and shot up to 270hp. Still, it was a close finish in that quest, which is definitely brutal for non-melee characters.

Now, with this edge, perhaps I should rethink melee? How widespread is poison resistance, after all?

Quick celebratory boots ... again. I had to do the quest with just 4 attacks in order to keep levitation, but it was enough. Aside from a Rotting Q bouncing about, that is. Man, I hate those guys.

Back to 5 blows and AC 155. Time for the lair?

That edge...

By the way, are you still messing with new talents for Wild Talents? I thought of a pretty obvious one, Wild Brand. (It does what it says on the box.)

I like the idea of Wild Brand ...

Wowzers! I've never seen a weapon so big, have you? The Weaponmaster says I'm good for a cool 1100 damage with poison but I probably need to cover resist base, eh?

Still trying to cover resists, increase speed, increase hp, increase int. In the process, I've managed 2 _Healing, 1-Rockets and 1-Disintegrate. But I still fail Healing at 5% so am a bit nervous around the big dragons.

Nobody finds bigger weapons than me ... *Nobody* :D

Speed is covered, but still no Sound or Nether and I desperately need Int and a dash of Con.

Well, it was a bit of a joke pose ... Here I am back with my tiny 14d5 sword. It seems so small by comparison ;)

The Old Castle at last despite no nether. Its not really necessary at this point, with +41 speed, but 2 of the Raals woke up instantly (I was on them in under 10 moves, too!). Nasty, but not threatening. And I've been spanking Dracoliches for quite some time ...

The reward is a winner, and even covers Chaos resistance. I still struggle with Sound and Nether, but its only a matter of time!

In the "Surprisingly Useful" category are Holiness and Aggravate Monster. Holiness actually cures fear too, though I finally managed to cover that resistance.

Since I will never find the Jewel of Judgment, I'll just have to make do with this substitute. Pretty spiffy, eh?

To celebrate my new found intelligence, I New Lifed a half dozen times to get this miracle allocation of stats. I was clinging to a 112% life rating (and 18/90 Con, 18/70 Int) and this life is only 99%, so my hp are a tad lower despite +2 Con. But gaining +4 Int is huge. Now ManaStorms are still unusable, but Rockets are now possible. I just need a bunch more is all ...

*Monkey King*

Actually, my edge is still more deadly, but I have strict policies regarding minimum speed, so the +2 speed King gets the call. In complete strangeness, my Heavy Lance of Attacks is more deadly than my edge (unless poison works) which means that quantity still beats quality ... But at least a +3 attack dagger now comes up short and a 4d8 weapon is fairly hefty.

Nenya was an unidentified ring in a vault, supsiciously looking like either Mana or Tulkas to my untrained eyes. And man, was that hard to get despite my 55 charges of destruction. But barely possible ... I need to start taking down the 120 or so uber high powered uniques whenever I can, which is hopefully when there aren't 20 or 30 of them on a single level!

I desperately need rods of healing since I can't quaff potions when fighting toe-to-toe. Where are they?

On 3.8.2012 18:02 chris wrote:
OK, I'm a bit bothered by extra attacks on weapons now ... One should prefer this:
a Heavy Lance (Pattern) (6d8) (+16,+12) (+1)

to this:
a Heavy Lance of Extra Attacks (4d8) (+17,+10) (+3 attacks)

or this (Which has +2 blows as well):
The Bo Staff Monkey King's Cudgel (2d8) (+20,+25) [+15] (+2 to speed)

Also, I think this is too nuts:
a Diamond Edge of Slaying (14d5) (+25,+26) (+4) {|P}

So, I went thru artifacts and decreased blows on a lot of stuff. Weapons of +3 attacks are now harder to come by. And Diamond Edges resist becoming egos quite a bit, though it is still possible (1 in 7 and there is still WeaponBranding and ArtifactCreation).

Finally, I tweaked the odds of dice doubling for slaying weapons:

1in3(Heng) -> 1in(dd*ds/5) (Old Cheng) -> 1in(dd*ds/2).

So getting a Diamond Edge to double is now 1in17 rather than 1in7.

Now, back to the fray!

Captain Immunity! This after clearing a GCV *deep* in the bowels of Angband. Geez, I killed quite a few uniques and scored all the artifacts you see here, plus about 6 more I couldn't carry.

I think I want a touch more speed after all. Getting double moved, double breathed, full hp down to 120 by Bahamut is anything but fun, and me with +35 speed at the time. And this is with the speed system toned down a bit, too! So I think Amber will get the call and of course, Jack's cloak needs to come back on. Is an extra +3 speed really worth it?

Oberon down! I really wanted more rods of healing, but had to make do. Man, those are apparently uber-rare. Heck, I even found the Jewel already (at 201 uniques, 120 artifacts, 17hrs).

I'm pretty sure quaffing *Healing* splashes for 500hp to all adjacent monsters, so I really ... *really* ... want rods of healing before the Serpent. I'd like Vilya anyway, so I guess it is time to hunker down and see if I can't out-wait the RNG. (Spoiler: Splash for 50d50 healing, though I'm not sure if there is distance reduction).

So obviously, potions are out for the final battle, which makes this a difficult race indeed.

OK, that will be my next project. I've been meaning to play a Forcetrainer anyway, to check out all the recent monk biffs.

I got bored looking for rods of healing, and went for the J with only 5 (but picked up #6 on L99!). That was far too many, it seems, as I totally spanked the guy. Well, maybe let's just say I spanked him before he could spank me. He had some tremendously deadly rounds in him, each of which forced a teleport out of me. So it could have gone either way ... When the dust settled, I found a couple drained staves in my kit! Doh! I forgot to remove the auto-pickup stuff, and I was really wondering how he regenerated so damn fast!

Pure melee for the win. This character dump vastly understates the damage output as I had both slay evil and enhanced criticals working in my favor.

On 4.8.2012 02:52 chris wrote:
>Do the new power rings/WM do anything for unarmed / monk / forcetrainer?

Actually, yes they do! I went in to add code support for this and it was already there, though I don't think the character dump damage output reflects this (and would be hard to figure since it is table driven).

But, Monks currently don't benefit from Elemental slays (e.g. Mana Branding or a Ring of Power). I think I'll give them that for 1.0.109 ... My take on elemental slays from off weapon equip is that it is nice, but not overpowered. In the battles that matter, monsters are immune to all elements anyway, so it won't work. Of course, monks have huge damage dice on their fists so this will be very powerful, but they've really lost their true power relative to hengband: gratuitous, infinite, uber-stunning.
