Here's a tough challenge character: Arcane HM!

I picked Balrog for the intrinsic demon breath, despite how much I despise this race (Feeds off human corpses, horrible charisma and shopkeeper rage, abysmal xp penalty). I scummed some corpses from townsfolk, but they are rare (1 in 20?), unlike skeletons (1 in 5?). In so doing, a let my light almost go out (initial town had no oil), and I was reduced to tedium to slay Smeagol, casting Light Area consecutively to march down corridors. And Greater Hell Beast was generated right by Smeagol, who danced around it taunting me with laments over some precious or other. Well, I zapped him to death, and some how the GHB never woke up despite my Bad stealth.

CL15 before I can breathe, and the breath runs off of Con (which is where my first 2 stat boosts went). Imagine my joy when Con bumped from 18 to 18/51 on the second boost :D

I'd like to do the Sewer, but stealth prohibits. Plus, no gold. And I can't dig or I will starve. So, I guess I'll play some more quests, but it is hard for this class to kill stuff. Maybe The Orc Caves so I can flee when things get out of hand?

Oh, and Smeagol either dropped a westerness or a pattern weapon. Don't know yet, but it is surely welcome. But I don't think I will pursue melee for quite some time. My next stat boosts are going to Int for spells, and more mana for breathing.

I tried one more quest, but managed to kill Lousy with just 6hp left, completely surrounded by lice. So, after that experience, it was off to the Orc Caves to baby myself up to CL15. Even Servents of Glaaki require me to teleport in panic ... I could maybe handle 1 of them at a time, not 20. So, there's me, teleporting around the level like a fool, selling out to kill tigers and such, and finally ... oh so finally ... I hit CL15!

Only to learn I fail at 54% on my breath :(

Well, at least someone dropped me a copy of Hellfire Tome, which I can sell for 30k gold. So maybe The Sewer is doable after all, but I better wait for a couple !Speed first, just to be safe.

[CL20:The Sewer] 01:30
In the loot was a !Speed (not needed after all) and a !Experience. Nice.

So, off to The Sewer, where I teleported immediately, leaving rats to do as they wish. I smacked down the lone Blue Icky with my eternal zapper, used my stone to mud wand to approach the gremlin, who never managed to breed, but did manage to eat one of my corpses. Then, clear the right half, use stone to mud to setup los on the undead mass posse, and zap away! Breeding got out of hand, so I actually managed to hit CL20 on the quest, and I'm not done yet, but I think things are under control. Picking Con twice more and going up 5 levels has brought the fail rate from 54% to 29%, which is manageable, I think. Plus, I like all those hp :D

On 24.6.2011 21:42 chris wrote:
[CL21:DL18] 02:16
OK, I severely miscalculated this guy. The Demon Breath isn't quite useless, but it is about 2% as effective as melee. Lets see what the problems are:

[1] High cost.

[2] High fail rate. I'm down to 24%, but I still fail 3x in a row routinely.

[3] The above 2 points mean I am out of spell points quickly. So I have to ?Teleport once hp run low.

[4] All evil monsters resist nether. Breath is nether 1 in 2.

[5] Fire resistance is rampant. And monsters don't just resist fire, they are typically immune to it.

So, I usually bring myself down to 100hp or so trying to cast the ability, since I pay with hp once mana runs out. To put things in perspective, Nar the Dwarf was so far beyond me. I'm really not sure how I managed to kill him (melee for 12hp round or breathe and take 20hp damage, fail half the time, breathe fire the other quarter which does no damage, breathe nether the remaining quarter which does 30hp damage. I got him, but only by getting lucky with breathing nether (and he heals himself, brain smashes to hallucinate, etc). In the process, I took over 4000hp damage (20 or so ?Teleports when down to 50-80hp) and was sent hallucinating 5 or so times.

Then I drew the Icky Queen, who is just like Nar (immune to fire, resist nether) but is fast to boot. I couldn't even get a star off her, and just gave up.

Finally, I drew a conventional orc unique in Ugluk, who somehow does not resist fire. I can kill one or two orcs at a time with my breathe unless I line them up, so slogging thru his entourage was tedious. In the end, I lured him into a wide open room, pelted him with all I had breath wise, was down to 80hp with him next to me, tried one more breath that put him into fear mode. Thank goodness! Quaff !CCW and breathe again to finish him off.

And ever since Smeagol, rewards have been trash. But Ugluk made up for it with a force weapon and Arvedui. 2 attacks? I think I will melee now! (But look out ... no FA again :D

Are you wondering where all my food went? I am. I just turned hungry and discovered all my corpses are missing. Seems The Icky Queen does that too ... Grrrrrr.

[CL29:The Barrow Downs] 04:13
I spent some time in the mountain ... running for my life :) So, I decided to just sell out like crazy for Sting. It worked, except for one small sword I couldn't get to thanks to a elven druid who summoned a gazillion phase spiders (that was sword #3). Fortunately (?) Sting was waiting for my as sword #4.

With that, I figured to go for The Barrow Downs. For some reason, Hellfire showed up as a drop in this quest again ... Actually, this is useful for me and I'll be on the lookout for steel bolts from now on. And +4 strength is always nice.

So, I have FA covered from Sting. As tempting as Hagen is for the speed boost ... I ... must ... resist ... this ... time!!!

On 25.6.2011 00:49 kingvictory2003 wrote:
Haha I know that temptation too well. One of my recent rogues actually died doing the mimic's quest when I swapped out a FA-granting weapon for a higher damage one--I had no idea door mimics could hit to paralyze :P

My melee sucks sooooo bad that I'm going the pure caster route. I'm actually finding the Balrog Breath more useful now than early on! Plus, with Anti-melee, I can wear this nice +6 con ring, and swap in Hagen for some speed as well as a chance in hell of surviving an encounter with Jack of Shadows.

Maybe I can score some good wands this way?

On 25.6.2011 04:16 chris wrote:
Yup. -Disintegrate and -Dragon's Frost, both really nice for me.

Boy, Balrogs normally level slow. But Arcane High Mage Balrogs level really really really slow.

I'll need some uber gear before even considering The Cloning Pits. Perhaps Eonwe and Shiva's Jacket :D

Time for The Cloning Pits and Shiva's Boots ... not! A pretty easy quest, and I only undertook it for the FA on Frodo. Seriously, wearing a ring of FA at this stage of the game is downright embarrassing. And I just realized that with the no monster in fighting option, this quest no longer has the potential to go explosive anymore.

Disappointed with my hobbit boots, I decided to sell out for The Old Castle. CL35 for an Arcane HM is definitely *extremely* early, but I could melee passably. Its not like I wanted Thranduil, but perhaps the other reward might get some use (probably not, though).

I brought the requisite ?MonsterConfusion but each Titan took 3 attempts to confuse, and even once confused, they stumbled into me by accident, flailing those gigantic fists randomly about, dishing out in the neighborhood of 50% of my hp in a single round when lucky. So, I had to liberally quaff !Healing, but I have a bunch of those and went into the quest with 10.

The Iron Lich was easy, but the last Greater Mummy summoned another Iron Lich for fun, and it promptly summoned a Demilich. Oy! But, leading them out into ASC, they were no problem. Nothing was a problem after those damn Titans, confused or otherwise ... And I got that crummy leather cap for my troubles.

I might give dragons a go now. I'll mix it up with one and done wands, flaming seeker bolts, and a smidgen of melee.

Bubble Vault on DL60! I managed to clear the minor access point, which netted an artifact ring of speed (esp evil, I'm pretty sure), BDSM, Mjollnir, Destiny, Laputa. Unfortunately, an Unmaker was in the vault (on DL60??) so I had to burn a ?*Destruction*. I'm saving my staff, as well as a ?Recharging, but I don't think I'll need it.

Check out the 6 attacks for 444 damage :D

Still to go, an executioner sword (C'mon Slayer!) and another ring of speed!

5 attacks for 462. I freaked out when I spied an 8d4 katana in the middle of a somewhat significant vault. I used destruction, but oh ... and I mean *oh* ... so carefully, so that I could get it. Still, it was difficult, and just when I thought it was a guaranteed tasty treat for Mr. Balrog, I scrolled up the screen so that I could view the top half of the vault and noticed a Great Wyrm of Power!! On DL60!!! It was still sleeping, though, but just goes to show one should never get too confident.

Aglarang is super nice, but it has some drawbacks. The big one is that is only supports single handed wielding, which nets something like -30 to hit vs. using two hands. That hurts for a mage ... Also, it has low plusses at (+0, +0), another bad point. Still, I won't use anything else ;)

Now, I just need Fingolfin and Shiva's Boots ...

OMG! Some of the hardest quests ever, and these began in the late 50's which is not a good sign :D

First, there was Ahtu. He hits very hard, and has a big whopping nether breath for over half my hp. With Amber as my only healing, I quickly exhausted that, and had to continually teleport and rest to regain hp. Thank goodness Amber gives regeneration, too.

So, at that point, I decided DQII for the _Healing would turn things around. It did ... until I quested for the Yamata-no-Orochi. Think baby Tarrasque here. Baby, only in the sense that hit has fewer hitpoints, is not quite so fast, and doesn't drain charges. But it breathes just as often, and nearly as hard. Fortunately, the wide variety of breaths meant I didn't take the big powerhouse killer chaos and disenchantment. Nexus and plasma are relatively weak damage breaths. So, this took Amber, 4 _Healing, and 50 !CCW until I finally got it weak enough so its breaths didn't hurt so bad. It really makes things tough when facing a 1 in 2 breather that forces you to heal 1 in 1!!

OK, how hard can it get? Fiona was not so bad. But Pinky? OMG! That bitch heals like crazy, and we fought for about 30 minutes before I finally finished her off. She easily healed herself 40 times, so add 22,000 hp to her otherwise hefty total. She just kept blinking and spamming line of sight to heal herself. And I tried shooting her, but she got ticked off, healed more often than usual, and tossed in a casual brain smash to slow me and drain all my mana. And if I ever did get her down to one star, she just sprinted away from me to rest up, and I dare not chase here cause she would just double heal and then proceed to whoop me with her absolutely bone crushing hooves. Damn! Then, when the dust cleared and I only had 200hp to spare, I noticed I forgot to swap in the Harness. Oy! My bad ... :(

But I picked up a +2 attack ring and Ulmo along the way some place. I know I said Aglarang was it, but you need to realize that Ulmo gives 25% to 30% greater melee accuracy at the high end (Aglarang is around 25% accurate vs big dragons, so I constantly need to buff just to reach the mid 30%'s ... It takes 40 rounds to kill a venom wyrm!).

Once CL46 hits, I gain Clairvoyance, so maybe I can start looking for -Rockets and 5d5 swords ....

Here's an equal opportunity slayer:
a Blade of Chaos of Force (6d5) (+14,+12) (+2)

Now that I am leaving the Dragon's Lair, this is better than Ulmo. Besides, what else are my spell points for? 5 attacks for 595 (with berserk ... 530 without berserk).

So many failed quests ... Where to begin? I was doing fine with the likes of Glaaki, Caine and even Rhan-Tegoth. Rat-Boy was a pain with his stat drain, so I switched to Anarion and Aglarang, and the Dragon Caves after that, but was frustrated by my lack of melee accuracy, and decided that what was really fun was the Force Sword. Oh sure, the Glaive is nearly as deadly (470 per round) but I need every last bit, it seems.

The Emperor Q? Well, he just out summoned me. Once Black Reavers and Dio Brando showed up (3x Dio got summoned!), I had to destruct. No sense risking a time stop with all that nastiness around. So, I decided no way, and gave up.

Against Caldarm, I barely pulled it off. Monsters that heal themselves out of line of sight are brutal, and Caldarm and I did the blinky healy summon lockey dance for quite some time. My mistake was fighting thru his initial locke clones, which cost me 6 _Healing and Amber, leaving only 2 _Healing charges for Caldarm. And that's not enough! We fought so long that all my speed ran out, as he just kept healing himself! Eventually, I must have got lucky or something because he died. And I must say I really enjoyed feasting on his corspe after all he put me thru.

Then, a string of failures: Richard Wong? Stat drain equals no way. Shum-Gorath? Palease! Wahha-Man? I gave him a go, and got him down to 3 stars before all my healing ran out. Nothing I could do at that point, as he regens faster than I, and dishes out so much damage. I needed to heal after every round of combat. Yog-Sothoth? Well, I'm failing left and right, and could not handle his massive con drain. Ditto with Shub-Niggurath.

Then, a victory! Cerberus. Took almost all my healing, though. Gothmog, I should have handled, but he spawned in Lure mode, and I just could not get next to him. I used 15 *Destruction* dealing with his posse, and still never got a round of melee against the guy. So, its not like I'm pushing for a clean sweep of the quests here, and I just failed that one too.

No way I'll be able to handle 92 thru 98, so I might as well keep failing them to end my misery? My money is on Destroyer, Nodens, Unicorn and maybe Talos. We'll see :D
