So far I haven't been using magic *at all* except for the illuminate spell. Maybe that will change as time goes on? I'm not too familiar with the Illusion school so I don't know how useful its spells are vs. high-level monsters.

I REALLY like Horrid Visage, it's a great defensive spell. Hypnotic pattern is a lot of fun to play with too, a good help in going after deep monsters that are vulnerable to sleep. The detect spells are nice, of course. And you've got a permanent lite source now but I still might suggest learning Luminosity: the +4 light radius is like a "light room" spell that doesn't wake up monsters.

The temporary telepathy spell isn't bad either.

I also like Invisibility. It lasts long enough that you'd still be invisible after your mana regenerates, so if you use it carefully you can have a +4 stealth bonus a lot of the time you aren't in heavy combat. Also, Noble Visage is a decent use of a spell slot if you can remember to use it, especially when buying or selling expensive objects. (And, hey, you probably have the tier-1 slots for it.)

Unfortunately my shiny new sword was not enough to slay the unique AMHD. I had to flee for my life after being double-moved (at +10 speed, no less) with consecutive nasty breaths. If not for !Resistance that would have killed me - heck, if one of the breaths had been poison then it would have killed me anyway. If I had known that this dragon was so fast then I wouldn't have even attempted the quest. Other player take note!

It would have nice to find a Shield of Resistance with ResPoison, but no luck so far.

The big thing holding me back right now is a lack of speed. I've cleared dozens of vaults around levels 50-60 but without finding any speed. Frankly that's one of the things that's always bugged me about Z... =Speed is native to level 100, whereas you need it for survival much earlier. In the meantime I'm burning through staves of Speed at an extremely rapid pace.

I opened the door and a forgotten jumping fireball (undetected by ESP) explodes in my face, waking up the Jabberwock. The Jabberwock instantly breathes chaos and I die.

To add insult to injury, my swap shield had rChaos.

I swear, ESP does me about as much harm as good sometimes...
