Let's try this again. My hobbit just can't back down from a good fight!

18/40 DEX becomes 22. (DEX+clvl/2-10) would be +11. 18/10 STR is +2, for a total of +13. Why is it +20?

Er... DEX+clvl/2-10 would be +12, for a total of +14, I mean.

Oh, are we dropping the weapon weight from the calculation? I misread and did (Dex + Lvl/2 - Wgt) ... I thought we were trying to penalize the big stuff. The +20 vs +14 is from a 4lb weapon (-4) versus a hardcoded -10.

How about (Dex - 10) + Lvl/2 - Wgt?

On 21.11.2010 02:07 chris wrote:
OK, I'm doing (Dex - 10) + Lvl/2 - (Wgt - 5). I feel strongly about punishing on heavy weapons. I centered the Dex adjustment around 10, and the Wgt adjustment around 5lbs. So, a 3lb whip actually gives another +2. A 20lb weapon gives -15.

So, 30s into this character's life, I spot Farmer Maggot. I didn't like the way he was looking at me, and quickly checking to make sure his dogs weren't around, I slapped him in the face and called him out! He died quick enough, and gave me a 13lb Long Sword of Burning. 9 extra lbs of penalty over the rapier, but the better dice and the fire brand should compensate.

I rolled the Thieves and Wargs, pushing Con 2x and Dex 1x. For DL2, I got Lagduf, who is somewhat tough at this point, but the extra dueling AC is huge early on. Sure, I'm -28 AC normally, but with a challenge up, I am +72, and Lagduf had trouble with that. He dropped a nice light 3lb Vampiric Whip, which I think I will hang on to.

On 21.11.2010 02:11 chris wrote:
@Dave: What do you think about making the challenge AC bonus 50 + Lvl instead of a flat 100?

On 21.11.2010 02:28 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Ah, sorry, I didn't mean to say there shouldn't be a weight penalty. I meant that 23 damage for a level 1 character was too high, so I wanted a -10 constant factor.

(DEX-10)+Lvl/2 - Wgt sounds good (so 13 damage with your Hobbit). Another +5 might be too much for the early game.

Regarding AC: 50+lvl is a bit too weak... compared to the -50 penalty, that's a +clvl AC bonus. At lvl 20 or less, that's hardly anything, and past lvl 20, you're having terrible problems with damage. I'm actually OK with the current +100 flat AC. Before level 20 is a breeze, but lvl 20 to 40 is pretty hard. If you really think +100 is too strong, we could do +75+clvl/2.

Could you upload 0.16? Avenger would benefit quite a bit since he's at 18/149 (32) DEX but only 14 INT.

On 21.11.2010 02:38 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Oh, and the INT bonus to AC is there to counteract the fact that you're not allowed to use your off-hand for either a weapon or a shield. With 18/220 INT and clvl 50, it becomes 60 AC, which is pretty good, but at clvl 1 with 18/20 INT, that's only +10 AC. I suppose that's more than a normal Small Metal Shield, but 18/20 is also kinda high.

On 21.11.2010 02:39 chris wrote:
Its up. I can live with the +100 AC as is ... the early game is so short lived anyway that it scarcely matters that Farmer Maggot can't handle you!

Random dungeon quests to DL12 netted me a tasty *thanc, good for some decent early damage. As a breather, I ran the early quests, including the orcs (nothing much there) and DQI (Heavy Pattern and Defender weapons). I'm going with the Pattern Weapon for 38 damage since I only score 21 with the Defender. The Defender has RBase and Poison, so I'm tempted. Dave, you were spot on with your first Duelist's Defender ... Truly awesome!

At this point, I had 3 rods of light, so, in a rather dishonorable fashion, I killed the 400 undead masses allowed by the game. They were only worth 13xp a piece at this point, but it was good for leveling up to CL23.

I'm back to pushing Con every chance I get, after a brief foray into Dex. HP are just so important for this class ...

On 21.11.2010 05:06 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
DEX is huge! 4 points of DEX gives you +8 damage, and +4% to stun, slow, and wound. If you're fighting tough monsters, your stun, slow, and wound chance is probably only 20%, so +4% is pretty significant.

My duelist going from 14 INT to 32 DEX, or +18, had a super-easy time with the Warriors of Dawn (of course, he also had Zantesuken :-P).

On 21.11.2010 05:21 chris wrote:
Yeah, I saw your precious 1 attack for 60 damage ;P Made me jealous. Also, the fact you had nearly 300hp at CL22? Damn, your kicking my butt. If I play properly (i.e., wear that defender) I am only doing 1/3 your damage!

Never fear, hobbits are a resourceful lot. Provided I don't get a sub DL30 freakin' earthquake critical again, I should do alright :D

Classic early game struggle for FA and RBase ... I could have it all with that Defender, and will do so shortly, but it severely biffs my damage output by over 60%. I'm still hopeful that someone will drop armor of resistance, but 4 excellent armor drops have all been crap. And FA, well, I could use Aegis Fang for 55 damage, or there is a *thanc for 44 (?) that plugs up Elec and Conf resistances.

Anyway, last quest was Tom, who is not too bad. I landed in the level next to a pack of DE Warlocks. What to do? Attack without a challenge and they will Mana Bolt respond, since I can't kill them unless I challenge them. There are 20+ of them, and 2 mana bolts kills me. But, if I challenge them, they wake up and take first move, sure to be a dreaded mana bolt! (Standing next to them is safer). Also, no confusion resist, and, well, they do that to.

?Teleport, and I land smack in the middle of Tom's entourage. Adjacent is an out of depth mob of giants, including a Storm Giant (no elec resistance), 2 biclops (kills me in 1 round of melee without a challenge up), a cyclops (maybe I can last 2 rounds of melee?) and 10 other sundry giants. And Tom has quite a few Aklashs to pepper me with poison, which I fail to resist.

So, all of this points to me being waaaaay out of depth for my power. Good thing I had my _Speed, and I could have used a few !Healing too, but made due with my 40 !CCW. Fortunately, all of my 20 or so teleports of desperation stayed clear of the warlocks, who were surely awake by this point, and I manage to kill all the above mentioned foes, but at great risk. One on one, and with a challenge up, I could handle the Biclops with just 2 or 3 runs down to 60hp. Without a challenge up, I just die!

Despite this wake up call, I think I will risk DL30 just for the 1 in a million shot of scoring a stat potion or 2. Oh, and the always small levels option is definitely going off, and staying off! All that previous fun was on a 1x3 level, which was way too tight!

Another wanted troll: Tom this time. And a granite wall generated right next to me. The level is large and Tom was nearby, so I quickly dispatched the guardian, and proceeded to farm granite walls, which is much safer than farming Warriors of the Dawn :D

210 down, and 190 more to go. I can't figure a good macro for doing this, so I'll just grunt thru them manually. Plus, any sort of macro approach would risk killing them all, and we can't have that!

I've gone back to pushing Dex at Dave's advice, and now my ability power is up to 91 (Dex 18/134). Fighting monsters in the mid 30's should prove rather effective.

Holy, Carp! ?*Acquirement* in The Barrow Downs!!! I read it of course, getting crap, crap, and Rohirrim. But that last makes it worthwhile, and I can just squeak in under my weight limit (22.4 lbs). That and Sting add another +4 to Dex (18/174). Monsters, watch out!

Of course, I better put my Nether resistance helm back on until this quest is finished ...

OK, that was a game changing quest. The big takes: Rohirrim, Slayer, !Con, and a couple of Hobbit artifacts, which are fortunately light enough to not disrupt my talents. Oh, and that Ring of Con +6 that I purchased earlier from the BM? Freakin' Huge as it adds 144hp!!! All I really need now is Thranduil :D

Hey chris, after spamming charge for so long, I feel more strongly about removing Blood Rush for the Blood Knight. Or at least reduce the range down to 2 from 5.
