I'm testing out recent monk changes, and new monster pack AI to boot.
I blew 20k of early gold on a nice AC elven cloak of stealth, and then realized I forgot to pick up my Orc Quest reward. No matter, it'll never beat that elven cloak of stealth! Except it did, being Thievery +3 ... Also, I jumped in DQI forgetting to wait for See Invisible. No matter, the quest is still doable, if mildly annoying.
Earlier Lady Zhurong kicked my butt ... I'm guessing my 70 AC at the time was just too low for early game :) Wearing armor really isn't an option at the moment, as I need all the AC I can get. Monks always started off rather weak, but now it is more so ...
On 10.12.2010 18:02 dzhang wrote: Hah! My Golem Angel Pact Warlock dished out something like 30k buying a Shield of Resistance... only to find Celegorm in the very next Angbad quest. That's the RNG for you.

AC up to 126 ... 144 if I wear my dragon gloves, which I would prefer to do. Except I need that +1 dex from Pippin for my 5th attack.
I got Flamecoat early on, supplanting even my +3 speed Thievery cloak. Actually, it was probably 5 minutes after the Thievery cloak, so even that didn't last. But +3 str, confusion, and (+3, +6) slays are too good to pass up.
Monk power start slow, but once it gets revving ... Oh, and Wilhelm Tell in the Barrow Downs is much appreciated, and for more than just See Invisible!
So, are the 1 in 9 quest reward odds too steep? Please let me know before I do the Cloning Pits :D
On 10.12.2010 19:56 chris wrote: [CL31:DL30] 02:06
OK, Body Building cleaned my clock, and dropped nothing that survived the auto-destroyer. Stunning, even after massive biffing, still saved my butt, but I took close to 600hp damage from the guy, which is a lot when you have less than 300hp total. Probably, I should have been carrying _Speed?
Anyway, next level gave some Orc Captain or other who dropped a totally stunning set of gloves:
The Set of Gauntlets 'Life of Leaf' [2,+9] (+3 to searching) {StInDxCnChSr;PoSh;Lv~T(StInCn}
All I can say is "Wow!"
On 11.12.2010 00:22 Antiguard@gawab.com wrote: Imo 1/4 or 1/5 max. I would guess most chars die before castle so it doesnt get done that often.
Most of the "better" rewards even are not THAT OP. Monk is one of those cases where reward is very good but even so those "better" odds would still be low.
You should also remove the Wall of stone spell and nerf herbal healing to heal 200-300 max. Nature spell school is OP .. WAY OP. Proof is that all your monks are nature :). And that lame Ranger sky drake farm. Even with those nerfs Nature is still VERY good. And then there is ofc the fact that Nature guys are easy mode for Arena kills too.
I guess you begin to see my point about low level problems with AC. Of course this can be compensated with AC rings tho. For monk though resistances are SUCH a bitch that ...
On 11.12.2010 03:11 chris wrote: Actually, I prefer Craft and even Life to Nature. I have been doing more Nature recently out of laziness for the early detection. Take Life for example. By CL35, you have a 3% fail 300 hp healing spell. Nature has Herbal Healing, but it is only castable at CL50 with 18/*** Wis and a Neutral alignment. I think I worked out that the life spell had 65% lower fail rates some time ... and if you are in a position where you need 500hp healing in preference to 300hp healing, then you are playing incorrectly :) Wall of Stone, I never use as a monk ... it simply fails too high. Its only good for Ranger/Mage/High Mage. Actually, Forest Creation is way more useful for the Monk.
I have probably done 10x more Craft Monks then Nature Monks, perhaps even more than that :D Craft Monks are by far the easiest combo to win Hengband ...
I could be talked into 1 in 5 reward odds I guess ...
On 11.12.2010 04:01 Antiguard@gawab.com wrote: Yeah i know they have forest creation but mobs can atleast move through it or blast it away. And yes if you are playing right 300 is enough and thats why it should only be 300 :).
Nature has half the abilities which craft has anyways and saves a bunch of inventory slots (light, food, resistance, detection, stonetomud,*identify* all basically save you +1 inventory slot which is huge) and you get good AOE + earthquake).
As you said 300 is enough and since you mostly use forest creation then its np removing wall of stone.
By the way: Your pack monster flee when you kill "boss" in this case the mob who summoned them? Rather annoying tbh have mobs spread in every direction and still spam you with ranged spells. Way more deadly than having them come at you and try kill you.
On 11.12.2010 04:37 chris wrote: I think hounds in fear are the worst! Or maybe DE Warlocks ...
On 11.12.2010 16:28 dzhang wrote: I think herbal should stay at 500. It has a high fail rate, so usually you use it after teleporting to top up on hp. 500/60 is roughly 8 hp/sp ratio, but with 33% fail, it's only 6:1. Dropping it to 4:1 is a bit much, unless you also drop spell cost by 40%.
On 11.12.2010 16:47 chris wrote: I'm actually OK with Herbal Healing as is ... Its a CL50 spell and while I personally never use it as a 500hp healing, that only means that biffing it to 300hp isn't really a biff (for me at least :). Dropping it to 300hp and making cheaper/easier to cast would actually improve the power of Nature, and I don't think that was what antiguard had in mind.
Nature is just a very useful realm, but it doesn't stand alone. You need powerful melee or another offensive realm to make it work. Its a good combo for monks, but I do think Life and Craft are better choices, provided you can endure the supreme annoyance of a detection-less early game.
On a tweak note, how do people feel about Trump Monks? I mean, Mystics are always summoning hounds and spiders, so this seems like a reasonable option ...
[CL33:DL32] 03:24
I'm playing with 25 quests, so I don't really know where the quest levels are. How often do quests kill newbies? I mean, your chugging along and then the game says you have to kill Body Building on DL28, or M. Bison on DL32, both of which are rather tough if you don't know what you are doing. Didn't someone recently get Malekith at DL30? And don't forget Jack ... Any of these could kill you before you realized the difficulty.
Well, I'm stubborn, and thought I could take M. Bison despite his mana bolts and superior speed. It worked, but could have gone the other way (Checking the bestiary, I see he only spells 1 in 8). He dropped Thranduil and a Ring of Speed +6, so it was worth the risk :)
I'm still waiting for usable resistance. Finding Arvedui for artifact #10 doesn't count as it weighs too much for a monk to use. I can't even put on my lightning resistance armor without disrupting my balance, so I'm relying on keeping up my resistance spell. And Nexus resistance is an absolute must at this stage of the game, far more important than any other resistance. So I didn't even bother to purchase a ring of lightning. No, I'll hold out for light armor of resistance ...
On 11.12.2010 17:33 Antiguard@gawab.com wrote: I dont think anyone plays trump. Pets are annoying except for riding.
I think Nature is just too sugar coated atm it has too much utility protection and heals and offensive for one magic school. Tbh you should remove heal from the whole school but i know you wouldnt go for that.
And it cant stand alone is no argument. No other school can stand even what nature can alone. Well maybe Life can but its just due to massive durability.
Sure craft is nice but it has no detection or other utility than protection. Most schools have "weaknesses" but nature has none. Well maybe the casting difficulty.
Maybe you should put the how much out of depth limit on quest mobs a bit lower on pre DL30 quests. If you take 49 its quest on every other level. I think Dave's suggestion was ok tho that you wouldnt fail quest if you recall. Instead just put stairs on the ground every level and if you go deeper then you fail? Some mobs are pretty impossible if you dont come prepared (for many classes). Also just bad luck on level creation can make some quests very hard. Ie like that level i had with a vault full of disintegration vortices or just too many uniques/summoners on level.
On 11.12.2010 18:28 dzhang wrote: Actually the one spell I would move from nature is cyclone... It doesn't really fit and is quite strong for melees.
On 11.12.2010 19:23 antiguard@gawab.com wrote: That would be another way to go.
This flee effect is getting more and more annoying tbh. Mobs just flee all around the map. Atleast reduce the duration .. a lot.
When it comes to packs i got a human pack with mixed evil and good mobs which was a bit annoying since it turned into a summonfest.
I assume all these temporal dudes hit for time? Wearing eternity so cant tell. Quite a stat drain fest with so many of them around.
On 11.12.2010 22:05 chris wrote: [CL36:Cloning Pits] 06:20
Weird bug ... I found Arverdui for a second time in the dungeon a while back. In the debugger, I could see that a_info[24].cur_num was 0 even when my second copy of Arverdui was sitting in my inventory! I think I might have fixed it, though. There is a routine called clear_cave() with some code duplicated from wipe_o_list() and wipe_m_list(). I had replaced the code duplication with calls to the proper functions ... perhaps this caused the bug? Anyway, I just found my third copy of Arvedui in the Cloning Pits, and I can tell it is OK now since my artifact list shows it. This all got changed with the recent pack ai changes since I needed to modify the behavior of wipe_m_list and found the code duplication repugnant.
Anyway, Celegorm and a copy of Nature's Gifts in the quest so far, bumping my AC from 97 to 213, which is slightly noticeable :) Still 3 Gachapins and a bazillion fire ants. Also, I'm playing with the 1 in 9 quest odds ... I'll bump it down to 1 in 5 after this character, just in the spirit of fairness!
On 12.12.2010 14:03 chris wrote: [CL36:Old Castle] 06:20
Embarrassing! I went into the Old Castle with Himring to swap in for Nether resistance vs. the Dracolich and the Raals. I killed the Dracolich, but man did it take a long time. I even had to heal for some reason. Weird. Finish the quest, leaving the Raal's for last, swap back in Himring and assume the posture of the Black Tortoise. Again, I can't remember Raal's being so tough to kill. Then I realized my balance was disrupted with Himring ... Doh! And this after killing a Dracolich and 2 Raals! Swap out the armor, lose the posture, and gain 6x the effectiveness. Sigh ...
Frodo and the Palantir. I actually prefer that monks don't receive their end game gear so early, but I will now relent somewhat with the quest odds. 1 in 5 probably won't happen that often anyway.
