Why no artifacts? Partly, I kind of think artifacts (standard or random) eventually wind up being too powerful. Don't get me wrong -- I think artifacts are an important part of the game. As a newcomer, it was a world-shaking thrill to get Anduril -- the very same sword that Aragorn uses. But by the time you get rings of power, Cubragol, Doomcaller... your stats are maxed, your resistances are double-covered, and it's time to whack Morgoth and claim victory.

My other thought is that the game is totally winnable without artifacts. In fact, there are some pretty cool items that don't get used much, only because they are usually made obsolete by artifacts: weapons of Gondolin/Fury, gloves of Thievery, and pretty much all of the dragon mail. With careful choice, I should be able to cover all my needs and still have a powerful rogue.

Why a human rogue? Well, I've won as a half-elf priest. I almost won with a half-orc warrior. I want something new. Something with stealth. And something with no race advantages.

This is not my first try, but it's my first post to the ladder. I've finally figured out how to get a rogue past the opening phase (hint: it's like a warrior but weaker). My last good character did the time warp with some hounds...
