Take a look at the following dump:

As inspiration, the rules of the game are: Ironman Downward option. This means no recall and no up stairs. So, once you enter the Pits of Angband, you cannot leave!

[CL19:Tower] 00:31
Very tough going early on. No detection. No resistance. No Free Action. No See Invisible. 1 attack. So, I could do the Thieve's Quest and rocket up to CL4, but then, my only hope was to skip ahead to the Tower and play carefully. Lack of FA hasn't killed me yet, and if I can just last to CL25 somehow, I think I can gain traction.

I picked Life for infinite Healing and Restoration resources as well as Clairvoyance, and Holy Vision. Though, lack of detection early on was annoying. Fortunately, this mighty ring of *Detect* Monster was bought for 4k from the BM after Farmer dropped a 9k whip of extra attacks. Very useful ...

Hi Chris,

What about the Dragon Lair? Does this mean you cannot leave once you enter, so you can ONLY enter Angband?

Hm. My gut feeling is that it shouldn't be so bad. You'll have inventory management issues, but if you carry 297 !oHealing and 99 !o*Healing*, I'm guessing you'll be pretty fine. A race/class that can create food is probably quite important.

Early start shouldn't be *that* bad, right? I mean, you can still kill things in the Wilderness for XP...

On 2.6.2010 06:26 chris wrote:
[CL35:Telmora] 03:50

No Dragon's Lair. The entrance to all dungeons save Angband are "closed". I skipped the wilderness due to xp biff ... but you are right. Actually, a character with distance attack can level up a ways vs. Sea Trolls and such. I'm not sure I will carry !Healing at all, as I might just rely on my spell. We'll see ...

Bad new though. I failed the Cloning Pits. Stupid spawning jellies took over the level before I noticed them, and they are so fast, I killed them for an hour with diminishing their numbers at all. I could have killed trillions of them, to no avail. Gosh, if monsters are going to breed so fast, at least you should get xp for killing them. I'd be CL50 right now if that were the case ... Old Castle was a walk in the park by comparison.

So, lack of boots means I have dex issues ... And speed issues ...

On 2.6.2010 06:41 chris wrote:
Ha! Drank my sole remaining !New Life and my hp went from 762 to 889 despite losing 2 points of Con. So a net gain of 162hp or so at CL35! Yup, life rating went from 89% to 119%! 30% gain of expected 11hp per level is 3.3 hp per level! Wow! I did it to improve my Dex (18/80 -> 18/100). Lost 4 points of Strength, 2 points of Con, and 1 point of Wis though.

So 5 !New Lives consumed, and only the last one had an above average life rating. I was going to stick with my previous life since I liked the stats, but the lack of boots really forced my hand ...

On 2.6.2010 08:15 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
What? No !oHealing? That's just crazy talk! Even if you have 0% Fail healing from the spell, you're not of a race that's resistant to stunning, and you're not immune to monsters that siphon away SP (like Shadow Demons). The only race/class combo I'd even consider not having !oHealing for is Golem Magic-Eater...

(Though, I guess you did it once before with your potion-less, scroll-less monk.)

Hey,

I always follow your chars (also those of Dzhang). So i also noticed the goldgaining and shopping chars. Great way to skip boring parts if i wouldnt have a problem with the shopscrumming. I can only rest at night so. What do you have to do to use the rooms at day too?

Thx for all the info and ways to reduce the amount of dieing.

In Heng 1.70, they added the ability to use the Inn during the day. Honestly, I'm not sure why they made that change ... Perhaps for the benefit of undead races like Vampires? I do recall back in Heng 1.62 that shop scumming was not nearly so easy :)

In!!! OK, Dave, I decided to carry some !Healing after all since I got nowhere near 99 !*Healing*. But weight issues are tremendous. With all I wanted to carry, I had a -5 speed encumbrance. I finally worked it down to just -1 ...

Long bow activates for teleportation. 2lb boots of levitation disrupt my balance.

Go!

[CL38:DL44] 05:21
Well, I just ran into my first near death experiences (yes, plural!). CL44 quest was for Fafner, who spawned next to a pit of 95 neutral D's. 40+ Ethereal, the rest were Gold and Bronze. The Ethereal's, whose detection range exceeds my telepathy were prone to mob. Always, I fought 5 or so at a time, with at least 3 in LoS! And me without darkness resistance. Down to 200 or so hp at least 3 times, and 300 or so hp a half dozen more. Any of those hp levels left me exposed to death from darkness, and even with reliable 300hp healing, I couldn't keep up. So I burned a bunch of ?Teleport to stay alive.

I got a 2nd Blessings of the Grail for my efforts. Geez, I waited forever to pick up a copy in the BM. If I had only known ... :D

[CL40:DL64] 05:57
Hmm ... weaker than I would like. Oh well. I decided I would probably need to wear 2 rings of speed in the end game anyway, so I ditched my +2 attack ring. That made it easier to handle Biketal, to be sure. And I'm starting to regret the lack of *id* ... One of these shooters could have disenchantment resistance, no?

Well, I'll probably have to make a stash of goodies some place that I can return to. I'll just need to figure out a system for marking the stairs to use.

Miscalculated! I figured if I drew the Destroyer, I could just fail the quest, forgetting that the level would be generated with no stairs. Once my speed ran out, I was in trouble. Finally, he was on 1 star, I was at 580hp or so and out of sp. So quaff !RestoreMana but he responded with 650hp of melee damage! Damn, my AC was too low. I burned 4 !Life and 14 !*Healing* together with 5 runs thru my sp casting Healing!

Damn! :D
