Thieve's quest for CL5 and a nice shield. For the record, I don't consider early digging to be scumming, but rather smart play. Get your sling enchanted (or buy a good one, but they almost never stock good slings) and your dagger as well. Your dagger is less important since you are likely to score a better weapon once you do quests at DL6 and 12, kill Wormy, Robin Hood and Smeagol. Finding an excellent sling is extremely rare, so you will be using your initial one probably until CL30 or so.

After 15 minutes of early prep, the game will go quickly for a while. I picked Dex at CL10 level up and rocketed up to 18/48 from 18. So, probably an 18/130 or 120 intrinsic, which on a nimble hobbit rogue means 18/350 or so end game :) Just to emphasize this point, the RNG blessed me with Dex again on CL12 giving 18/76. So, 24 minutes in and I have all 6 attacks!

OK, Boldor is no slouch. Well, it was his stupid Master Yeek companions that proved troublesome. They love to summon out of line of sight, and I was constantly getting surrounded by mobs: "It summons monsters!" was a continuous refrain. In the end, I killed over 250 monsters before I finally completed the level and picked up the loot. Boots of FA are nice!

Now, quests in Angband thru DL12 then its on to the Orc Cave.

Robin Hood dropped a Trump weapon. Now, I already had FA from boots, but I am super paranoid about nexus, especially in Hengband where stat potions are so rare. Plus, the better damage dice means my cruel stabs are more effective, even if I lose an attack due to weapon weight. When I recalled back to town, the BM had a =Damage(+15) for 13k gold. I could afford it, but I had to sell a bunch of loot, including my dagger and my shield of night and day. But, melee damage is now a staggering 165 per round, which should do for quite some time.

Should I take a risk for Sting? Its a good way to die, so perhaps I'll wait a bit and do the Orc Caves as originally planned.

Oh, I forgot, I drew that stupid ghost Q for my DL12 quest. Due to weight restrictions, I left my _DetectInvisible at home. What an annoying quest! I'd much prefer Nar who seems to be my DL12 quest monster most of the time. Fortunately, the 'Detect Unlife' spell can detect the ghost, so it was just a matter of casting over and over again until the ghost got next to me. It took forever!

Azog hits pretty darn hard. Since I've only found 1 !Speed so far, I was +0 speed while he was ... well, fast. 3 rounds of melee and he would kill me! But I got him at last, even if it meant teleporting away and resting a bunch of times. I don't really want the Ice ring (well, actually I do, but not enough to give up +15 damage), so I'll keep it at home.

Next up: Labyrinth for -Recall.

[CL25:Tengu and Death Swords] 02:09
Sidetracked! I recalled back from my Orc conquest only to luck into a pair of _Speed from the BM. Now, while using these in the dungeon is out of the question, they are quite handy for quests, so I ran all the early quests I could (Holding of on DE Lords for the Phial first). Sting was a cakewalk being in the first chamber I looked. Mimic's was tough! Race up the first slot at +10 speed to reach the doors and I'm down to 56hp, poisoned and confused. That was scary. But I had 40+ !CCW and that was plenty.

But check out what was waiting for me in the Tengu and Death Sword quest! Freakin' Anubis! I'll be going back to Sting, of course, but wow!

I also completed the Tower quest, sans abuse, just to remove the temptation! I'll wait for a -TeleportOther than attempt the Killing Fields to train dual wielding ...

Gachapin! Oh, how I hate thee! Your breath is foul, and your friends annoy. A hideous green beast, and a thief to boot.

I took a risk, killed the bastard, and got squat. Well, Forasgil, but that's hardly worth more than a few gp at this point. At least gimme Thranduil or something :-P

Hanging out at "Stat Gain". So far, I have been lucky. 28 minutes and 565 kills netted a !Con. Another 10 minutes and 187 kills netted !Wis (I'm keeping notes!). Usually, one potion per hour is good, though sometimes you can go 4 to 5 hours without seeing any. So this has been above average!

Dual wielding may be out of the question for this guy. Skilled at both Sting and Hagen, I was 5% accurate vs. AC 0. That's right, 5% across the board! I guess a nimble hobbit can't really fight well. With !Heroism and ?Blessing, I was able to get 20% accuracy vs. AC50 with Sting, but still 5% with Hagen.

I'll wait to get my stats up and try again later ...

[CL34:Killing Fields] 04:40
After finding Littlethorn, I decided it was time to sell out on the Killing Fields to train dual wielding. The Weaponmaster told me that I was 10% more accurate with Sting than with Hagen, so I decided to go that route. At (+0) base speed, I would need my 2 precious _Speed as well as all the ?Recharging I could buy! In the end, it only took maybe 24 charges of speed to kill 250 warriors of the dawn and the Maulatour (Thank goodness for reflection!). I'm now skilled at dual wielding! Yay! I did blow 3 !Healing, though >:(

Back to stat gain ...

I don't want to corrupt you! Basically, you can leave the quest without failing it. So, early on, it is a good safe place to level up. The real abuses come from farming certain breeding monsters. In quests, new monsters don't spawn, so that once you are alone with the critter you wish to farm, you may do so safely and endlessly (or until you run out of food)! There are at least 3 very profitable monsters to farm ...

[CL36:Cloning Pits] 06:26
About 4 hours behind my normal schedule, I have the boots at last. The real breaks that allowed me to consider the Cloning Pits were:

[1] Finding 10 freakin' stat potions! Way more than I normally get ... though I must say its been a while since I've played the early game. _ObjectDetection really helped.

[2] Fiona! Super sweet. I was dual wielding Fiona and Littlethorn until one of the Gachapins dropped Thorin.

[3] Buckland! That's my Old Castle reward, so I guess I can hold off on that quest for a looooong time :) This gave me +5 base speed with good resistance coverage (No Chaos, though). Plus, I could suddenly shoot for 300hp/round (Funny that I didn't shoot once in the quest, though ...)

So, I was getting poison from my boots of levitation. Given my low Int, I almost couldn't cast Poison Branding (127sp). It took "Intelligence and Littlethorn to boost me up to 131sp so I could enchant a blade of chaos. It really pains me to (a) give up dual wielding and (b) stop using Fiona. Maybe later ...

[CL38:DL44] 07:30
DL38 is when things start getting tough. Fast uniques, fast dragons. No detection other than detect evil. No haste self. No double resistance. Heck, you can run into a pack of wide awake drolems at that point and easily die. So, I decided the monsters at DL44 wouldn't be that much more difficult. Oh, some are, but I don't mind running away in fear! Eihort was a bit tougher than I would have thought given my *Ac, but none of his attacks are acid based (what kind of jelly is that?!), unlike the 4 shoggoths that were keeping him company. Cost me a !Healing and netted me some nifty cesti of free action. Wowzers!! I was kind of hoping for something decent to replace freakin' Thengel ... Oh well.

Blade of Chaos of Venom is 2.5 * 6d5. That's pretty good. But if I land my sneak attack (and Legendary[5] stealth helps me sneak!) than that is actually 5 * 2.5 * 6d5 or 225 damaged just on damaged dice! Its pretty nice, but I still miss pretty often ...

[CL40:DL45] 08:28
OK, if I thought CL38 was hard, CL45 is significantly more difficult. How could I possibly handle Garm without nether resistance or double cold resistance and only +7 speed? Well, I could if I carried my _Speed and plenty of healing, but I'm being quite frugal with resources, killing what I can, and hoping to improve my equipment.

CL40 gives a choice of stats to boost and I picked Int. No random boosts have gone to Int, and I've only found one potion in the dungeon. I also bought one in the BM, which has been accommodative to me despite my lack of scumming.

Gold is ceasing to be a concern thanks to numerous spellbooks. I still can't really cast spells, though maybe I'll start lugging around Black Channels for the Berserk spell.

OK, I recalled back to town and rechecked my fail rates. It is time to start using Battle Frenzy. Between swapping out for "Intelligence, leveling up to CL40, and finally getting my boosted over 18, my fail rate is down to 41%. That still sucks (11% fail at CL50?!) but if I'm not carrying any speed boost, I think I have to live with it! +17 speed is soooo much better than +7!

On 14.5.2010 01:23 chris wrote:
[CL40:DL45] 08:43
!Int and Holhenneth (finally something better than Thengel!) mean I am at a whopping 29% fail now! I'd consider that useable. I stocked up on !CLW to remove the berserk as needed, rather than wasting somewhat precious !CCW. I just annihilated Smaug!! (Though I ran away in fear crying for mommy when I saw Rinaldo ...)

On 14.5.2010 02:30 chris wrote:
[CL41:DL47] 09:42
OK, its coming together now. !Augmentation. Thranduil. Balli Stonehand. Caspanion. Legendary[12] stealth (when not 'zerking) and all resistances save nether. Good hitpoints and a now staggeringly reliable means of haste (14% fail).

Now, just gimme Necronomicon and another +6 Int and I will be satisfied.

Gosh, Darn It!! Lems is one tough cyborg. I tried to kill him without using !Healing, but that was a pipe dream. 50 !CCW and 3 !Healing. But thank goodness for Hit and away, giving me a nice mid range teleport and time to chug my potions.

I'm really getting spanked by uniques at this depth. Probably, I need to start carrying !Healing?

I've managed to kill a couple Storm Wyrms, a Bloodthirster (barely!) and Ancalagon (*Ac). I just found a !Polymorph and picked up the double resistance mutation. Sweet! That is part of my troubles ... but I shudder to think what the moron mutation will do to my chances at Wraithform.

=Speed(+8) laying on the ground. My first one, and that solves another one of my problems (Running around DL60 with +5 base speed is tough!). I'm now giving up LiDkNt, and I'd like to cover Dk if only to kill Jack of Shadows. However, the first time I tried, he total owned me. My AC is way too low, and his speed is way to high. I couldn't get more than 1 star off the bugger ...
