Just trekked from Sirion Vale 28 to Amon Rudh after gearing up in SV28. The gear found around SV28 includes: The Lamp of Gwindor, Chain Mail of the Mormegil (nice!), Holhenneth (first artifact no less; 0% fail escapes with scrolls!), Cambeleg, Cammithrim and a couple of very nice randart missile launchers.

Unfortunately both the missile launchers were cursed; uncursing the first (a x-bow) destroyed it, but the good news is that the second (bow x4 in the home) did survive the uncursing process. Unfortunately it's currently at (-19,-13), so it'll take a while to bring up to a usable state.

Also found a (Blessed) weapon with Telepathy on the trek towards Amon Rudh, so using that while walking around the dungeon.

Anyways, with the nice set of resists and decent HP I think I can probably take out Mim with enough ?oPhaseDoor.

Picked a "Boring..." level, cleared most of it before finding Mîm, and fought him in a corridor. Buffed with a !oHeroism and !oSpeed, flung a few bolts (+2,+2) at him (took off two or three stars) while he approached me in the corridor.

I just wanted to experiment a little with Mana Burn, so I tried meleeing him in the corridor rather than phasing out. Turns out Mana Burn works beautifully against him (even with a relatively heavy weapon), so I was able to kill him a few rounds with pure melee. He tried to flee, but I sniped him in back as he fled. (Muhaha.)

Immediately picked Armsman for greater likelihood of Mana Burn :).

So... any good places to level and gather more loot? (I seem to remember Anfauglith as a good place to level and to gather loot, but that was in the 0.x days.)

Maybe I should just around Amon Rudh 29/30 for a little while with "Autoscum" on?

It's a bit of a shame since there was an unidentified ring flavor (or randart) in the middle + the glalive of pain (probably) + some Hard Leather Boots...

Another milestone passed: Wiruin the Bastard is dead. He's been the bane of 2 or 3 three of my previous characters.

I saw him in YAGCV, and with 79% cold resist and 64% sound resist decided to take him on. Had to spend a !o*Healing* (just to be safe), but it was worth it to see that annoying vortex hit die.

Now, I just have to avoid doing anything stupid... easier said than done.

Suddenly Veldrin can slice through most things like butter. The next dangerous foe in the vault was Cantoras (I think I've had characters die to him before). There was a close call with a Death Ray (150ish HP), but a !oHealing took care of that and Veldrin pounded Cantoras into the ground.

I think I'd better stop for the evening soon... this is liable to induce cockiness. Just gotta clear *this* vault...

Well, that was... boring. I think Nan Dungortheb is the single most annoying dungeon in any roguelike I ever played. With the possible exception the The Void in ToME (but at least you're pretty much always constantly running away from danger there, so that usually keeps you on your toes and on the lookout.). Maybe my opinion would be different if there were any actual danger -- Hum, maybe the real problem is Superstealth...

Anyway, killed Ungoliant without any trouble. (Using the Trident of Wrath for rDark.)

Finally decided to hang around a little deeper; now hanging around level 85 of Angband.

Just wondering... is it necessary to kill Sauron before Morgoth? I don't particularly feel like a trek through yet another extremely annoying dungeon :).

Btw, it also seems very odd that WDoStorms are encountered before WDoChaos, but seemingly are much more dangerous. (WDoChaos damage is capped at 600, if I'm reading the source correctly.). Yes, they can summon, but I think I saw that once or twice during the entire game.

Maybe I'm just P-O'd, but it this does seem wrong.

I think the "extra damage if standing in water" is a bit "too much realism" and not something you can really keep track of during the game. Should I keep looking at my own floor time while fighting? Maybe remove that?

That's not unpredicable danger and sometimes you can even take a calculated risk (if you know that the foe is twice as fast, but has very low odds of doing the exact type of double-move that'll kill you outright). If standing in water also slows you down, I've never noticed it -- it certainly wasn't enough to reduce my speed to below +25 (I forget the exact number). It would have been obvious if it did (speed indicator is always shown).

3) I don't know how you do it, but not everyone is capable of winning with Ironman characters, as you are. I just don't think it should take that level of skill/patience/whatever to win the game in "normal mode". From my perspective I just got randomly killed because I didn't know the rather arbitrary rule about standing in water.
