Actually it's a jackdaw, but they didn't get into Angband.
It's in my bedroom for the usual reasons - fell (or was pushed) out of the nest, too young to fly back. After a day you figure it's going to end up as catfood (or road pizza) if it's not taken care of. It's quite tame, and very stupid (tendency to stand in the middle of the road).Currently turning (Angband) Japanese.Comment

Crebain is the plural dagnabbit. The singular is Creban or possibly Craban.

For some reason I thought it was Legolas.
He's still using it as a plural and, having been raised in Rivendell, is allmost certainly fluent in Sindarin. It also looks like a Sindarin plural of the same form as Edain for Adan. If it's in another language we have no idea what the singular is except that it's probably different.One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to bind them.

I think that's the only mention of them in the trilogy. Kind of a waste, really; the crebain have a lot of narrative potential!Comment

Well, according to this Norwegian philologist both ai and a pluralise to ai. Since we don't have a wordlist for third age Sindarin and don't have any candidates for root words in the older writings that are published the Wikipedia consensus really is the best we've got. Borrowing from proto-germanic would certainly be in charachter for Tolkein, but this is usually done for human languages. It may not be elven at all in which case we can't even guess what the singular form is.
We'll just have to hope Christopher Tolkein eventually releases the philological writings and an answer turns up therein.One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to bind them.
