Ok ... redownloaded ... copied the savefile over - and only the save file, and loaded it without doing any pref setup etc. ... and
    no crashes no more !

ok, now I only have to hunt down which one of these files crashes the game, and what settings are the actual cause ... Normally I play with 6 term windows set up .. any now it was the main window only (turning off those windows alone didn't help, so it must be something else ...).

Guess I won't get that done before the weekend, though.
No, I don't have a clue 'bout C, and I'm not starting my own variant.
    Never. Ever.

That would be most appreciated. That would also explain why we failed in reproducing the bugs.

No hurry. There is as yet no deadline for gold3.

Ok, this took a little bit more time then I had anticipated (especially, as I got bored, fed up and distracted in between .. http://www.taleworlds.com/ ) .. and now it's driving me insane:

I fiddled with different combination of *charname*.prf, startup.prf, my.prf and .INI .. and each time I thought I found the culprit because [Un] did not crash any more, it did instantly. Unless it was able to fool me more by crashing 5 breaths later. (There are no green dragon bats in reality, right? At least, there won't, if I ever will hear they've found some somewhere *stomp* *shoot* *smash* )

Finally, I deleted all .prf files from the /user/ folder, deleted the INI file, copied the savegame over (again), started the game:

I noticed the following: only the main window came up in ~80x25 size, and No Crashes !

I enabled Term-1 to -6. I noticed: while there was no .prf and .INI file to draw from, Term-1 still showed equipment, -2 inventory, -3 monsters, -4 messages, -5 monster recall, -6 player(extra) ... what isn't the default settings IIRC ??!?! (font sizes where back to default 8x13 though)

I kicked one bat, quaffed a !CLW and !CSW and ran around in front of the 2nd .. and had to notice:
        - the bat breath does not start next to the bat, but upon the same square, replacing the bat
        - the char stopped getting poisoned at some point ! After the poison wore off, he just regenerates HP as normal, no "you're poisoned" message appears any more, nor does the main window show a "poisoned" status below the main map.

.. now I wonder if the crashes are not actually related to the "graphic effects" of the poison breath, but the poison damage calculation .. getting breathed at 2x a turn, running aroud with "fast -more", using the number block keys to either move or block (5) in relativly rapid succession .. all while already being poisoned .. maybe makes the game itself choke

Not getting poisoned any more might be the same, or another bug.
Or is this a feature .. becoming immune to some species poison if you inhale enough of it over a prolonged period of time ?
No, I don't have a clue 'bout C, and I'm not starting my own variant.
        Never. Ever.

Ha, that was quite a heroic struggle. So, at last we know that removing all pref files cures the crashes (so far).

I've filed this as a bug. Thank you. It would be much easier if the bug was related to poisoning rather than to Windows port hacks. To be investigated.

The downloads from Berlios seem broken--I'm not able to download the release.

The SVN does seem to work. I did check out HEAD, but the version that I built had some bugs. I think I may have built it wrong. Anyway, it'd be great to download an official release.

Looks like Berlios' hosting is up to its usual tricks.

                Head is the development branch.

A subdirectory of Head, unangband, contains the stable branch.

                Does that make it clear?

Confirmed for current gold SVN (unangband/unangband). It seems to be so also for cone breaths issued by ancient dragons, but not for Cone of Cold cast by player. Also, no such effect for none-cone attacks. Anywa, to be fixed, since it breaks the LOS reachability expectations, for example. Might also corrupt some data...

Confirmed, but only when the bat is far off (5 squares?) or when its HP is too low to make the damage positive. Probably then the damage done is 0, so no poisoning effect occurs. Still, I'd rather keep the damage that diminishes with distance or HP at 1 point as the minimum. Even then it's worth checking than 0 damage does not cause corruption in the harming player routines, just in case

Well spotted, Arralen, thanks! Any volunteers for some code-diving?

This is actually how the projection algorithm for cones works. It's safe from a coding point of view, but you're right - these projections should usually not affect the source grid. Traps would be the obvious exception.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but is there any easy way to figure out what cures a specific disease? Things like a potion of cure blindness curing black eyes makes a but of sense I suppose, but hard to simply guess. Instead of saying "It must be treated by the appropriate remedy", would it be too spoilery to list the exact cure?

That's some good for nothing information. Roughly the PC equivalent of "Yes, a cure exists. No, I'm not going to tell you what it is." or "Figure it out for yourself!".

What buzzkill says. A tiny bit of Nethack in Unangband. At least you know a special remedy exists and at least there are general remedies with absolutely self-explanatory names (but expensive).

                                Bad news, or not ?

Un crashed again - with new char, pref files etc.
What is maybe good 'bout it?
That is was a Rotten Icky Thing that exploded in front of my char on Maggots Farm on Lvl3: The explosion cloud seems to have the same pink colour as the bat breaths .. so it's either the colour causing the problem - or does the explosion from the rotten icky thing does poison damage too?

Sadly, no really a savegame available, because the save is from earlier on that level, and the thing seems to have been generated later ...
