However I'm stuck, because confused on how to get my starting spellbook, and I have forgotten which school of magic I picked. Sure there are some prayer and song books in the shop, but I'm not playing a priest or a bard.
Istari can learn any spells from any books. Note that the priest and mage versions of spells are different spells.

Played a little bit more today, and cast my first trap detection spell and got a pleasant surprise. Good job with the way you displays what has been detected and what haven't. Really impressive.

I'm not sure if Un or Heng (?) or whatever was first with this kind of display (the 'x' marks). However, I suppose it's unique to Un that you can specify via options if the 'x's and the warning messages when leaving detected areas correspond to trap or monster detection. (Now that I think about it, I've not tested it well enough after the merge with the new V options code.)

Heng borrowed it from Un... FYI

Hi guys! My 'puter went kablooey, but I'm finally back and playing again. Hiya, Bando, Andrew!

One thing I've noticed - when I'm wielding a staff, the number of charges doesn't show anywhere on it. The only way I can check it is to use up a charge, whereupon it'll tell me how many I have left. I'm using a staff of Cure Mortal Wounds, haven't tried with any others.

There should be a spellbook of Cantrips in one of the shops in the town your character is created in (at least it's always been for me all the times I've played Istari). That's the first one you need, and it's cheap enough that you should be able to purchase it easily with your starting cash.

Its not a problem with the staff name length is it? I suspect we may not be showing enough detail on the equip screen - there's a couple of parameters around what information to show that may need to be tweaked... however I thought charging artifacts would have fallen into the same set of params.

                Hi Guys,

Looking forward to playing some Angband again so I had a look through the various versions out now and stopped on Unangband.

I downloaded the 062-gold2-win version and extracted, everything was fine.

However upon starting as soon as I hit "l" to activate the look command the game crashes. I am using Vista 64 bit, is that the cause of the problem? I don't plan to change operating systems just for Unangband, no matter how nice it's looking.

                Hope you guys can help!

The length could possibly be the problem - the name and bonuses takes up pretty much the entire equipment slot line. The message given when wielding and unwielding does show number of charges (didn't think to check that before, but at least there's that). I'll see if I can get my hands on staffs that have shorter names to check on this for sure. I'll report back when I have a definite answer.

there's a UI flag "show flavor for identified objects" or something like that. Does turning it off improve things?

It does seem to be the name length - tried it with staff of Starlight and the charges showed up fine when wielded.

Good idea about changing that option, Pete. I tried disabling 'show flavors in object description' - the number of charges does show up. The word 'charges' is truncated to 'char', but that's a minor thing, really.

Could you report it at http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?group_id=331 ? I don't have Vista 64 unfortunately, so may not be able to duplicate. Are you running at the standard 80x24 window size or had you resized it?

                        Regards,

                          Hi Andrew,

I usually maximize the window I play in. I actually tried starting the game up and just letting it run without maximizing it and it seems to work. Any reason why when I do make it bigger as soon as I hit "l" to look it shuts down?

Anyway went into Farmer Maggot's area and the rooms were fine, though the actual corridors were just flat x's like the tiles couldn't be read.

Seems like I'm having huge issues with Vista

It's because I've foolishly not done a bounds check somewhere, and as soon as you try looking outside the bounds of the array it crashes.

Oh folks ... I switched from W2K to WXPpro, from GF6600GT to Radeon 3650 this weekend .. and I still get the crashes with the savegame I uploaded here some time ago !!!!

So it's either something with that savefile, or something with the game files . or Windoze sucks? However, maybe I shoud re-download and post a list of MD5 sums if that does not help?

                              Never. Ever.

That's brutal. Anyway, thank you for reporting.

(Un)fortunately I've got no Windows, so I cannot reproduce the crash, but in case someone else could, it would be great if you could download unangband-062-gold2-win-debug.zip again, crash it again and post the exact savefile here again, just to be absolutely sure.
