*Grins* Thanks. This kind of comment helps me keep my development energy up.

Nick seemed to indicate he's open to a Z+ comp after the next release. What kind of character would people want to play?

I try to keep a balance between variants for the comp (ie not just FA all the time...); that said, actually being sent a savefile is a huge bias factor in favour.

Comp 97 is planned to be V3.2, as it should be out by then (and there is a big bias toward V for comps). After that, it's dog eat dog again.

Not sure how well this would work, whether it would be a major change or not... but how about instead of having a Weapon and Shield slots, have main-hand and off-hand. Characters could wear a shield, use a secondary weapon, or use both hand slots for a two-hander.

Hengband works that way. Hengband also makes you practice (i.e. use) a particular weapon (i.e. long sword, broad sword, latajang, the individual weapon type, not "swords" or "polearms") so it's hard to get started unless you practice single-handing your dual wield weapon type beforehand to get over the initial minuses to hit.

Sang's method of balancing dual-wield works nicely too: instead of getting full blows with each weapon, you get full blows with the primary and get a second chance at each missed blow using the secondary, naturally at the usual cost of abandoning shields/twohanders, but at no other cost. It's very handy in some specific situations (monsters that cause a lot of misses or the [S]-specific thing of "resisted" blows) yet not overpowered.

                  Hiya!

Trying out Z+ for the comp again, and having my first encounter with melee. Getting precise information on damage and enemy HP with every blow is strange, but it's a design decision and I can see this either way... but it does get a bit tiresome after a bit; am I overlooking a way to turn it off?

To add a little something actually on-topic (couldn't find a general Z+ thread, but didn't look very hard...): could the interface be tweaked to allow move-to-alter to work when running? It's a little inconveniencing to have to stop running to open doors.

/me runs screaming around his house opening doors by bashing into them, wheeee

I play as a Chaos Warrior, always, partly because I like the play style (mix of combat and magic) but mainly because leveling up is so interesting. Whenever I try to play something else I always get bored when I level up and...nothing happens.

Why not have the other classes get an event of some kind when they level up? I'm not sure exactly what might happen; it could be class-themed. For example, chaos warriors can get some ridiculously good upgrades early in the game, but they can also get hit with permanent, irreversible stat decreases, with being cursed, paralyzed and surround by monsters or even just straight up killed (though I avoid chaos patrons who do that). The high-risk, high-reward thing seems characteristic of chaos, but maybe other classes could have other types of events on level-up.

Also, there are like 16 different Chaos patrons but none of them are really that different from each other; but I always go with Balaan or Hionhurn because they are likely to give the upgrades I want and they never straight up kill you. Why not tweak the list of patrons to cut it down to several very distinct ones instead of 16 that are basically the same, and give the player the ability to choose which they have instead of just being randomly assigned one?

Someone forgot to eat his Chaos-O's. You do realize the irony of a Chaos Warrior objecting to random, haphazard, chaotic patron selection?

Damage/HP: That is a special ability that only Humans get in Z+. I didn't include a way to turn it off.

Move-to-alter -- I don't think so. We already run through open doors, opening closed doors could lead to instant death; the player should be the one in charge of that. It could always be an option but it seems like a tiny payoff.

If that's important to you, why not play a Beastman? They have a chance of mutating when they level up, no matter what class they are.

And actually there are objects that give you a chaos patron - any chaotic weapon, for instance. Sure, no huge boon at the very beginning of the game, but it can come up later.

But in response to choosing your chaos patron: in the new version you'll have an option, when you die, to "rebirth" your character when you load the save file left over after death. This will give you the exact same starting character, but in a new world. So .. it's not the same as choosing your chaos patron, but once you get one you like you can keep it.

How about a turn count in the character dump for 3.3?
You can't have competition mode and no turn count.

                                Already in there.

EDIT: In 0.3.3, I mean. Not already in there now.
