I started playing a bit this morning and I got the post-quit-"crash" mentioned above using your windows-build on Vista (but only once).

I also noticed that shops accept to buy stuff pseudo-ed as dubious, is that intended?

I'm trying out a mage and at least for the start (I'm just on level 10) the activation on the mage-staff is making it very easy but I guess that will change when I'm not restoring all mana with each activation. The activation also basically gives you endless fire bolt (or whatever the first spell is, I don't remember yet) but that will also only be useful as long as the monsters actually die from a few fire-bolts. I'm excited to see what you did to the mage spells later on...

Hurrah - well done, Nick: looking forward to seeing the new ideas. Can I second the 'FAA Mage for C74' idea?

PS Well done on the 4th Test, *grumble*, *whinge*. That I'm from near Headlingley originally just adds insult to innings defeat injury...

Hmm. I'll have to try and track that one down at some point.

Yes. Dubious means they have some negative qualities - but they may have positive ones that outweigh the negative. If you are playing a full caster, you really want to ID stuff before selling it - very nice gear can be dubious under weak pseudo.

Yes, that was what was intended from the activation - it should become irrelevant later. I certainly had fun designing the later spells

Well, I guess I can give way under the weight of popular opinion...

          Pardon?

          The Oval should be fun

Heh, I was trying to find a smaller font than 'size 1', y'know.
The Oval will be horrible - we're talking about bringing Mark Ramprekash back, which would be along the lines of Oz recalling Michael Slater...

Actually, I'm half-tempted to write an edit file to turn FAA into AshesBand - although it would have to be customisable to have either Ponting or Strauss as the big P (with Geoffrey Boycott/ Chappelli as the Complainer, Graeme Swann as Pongo the Devious...)... I wonder if Billy Birmingham ever 'banded?

Just a quick question, what does "dam 5 + 13" on the frost beam spell for the mage means (I assume it doesn't mean damage 18)?

Oh, and another one, is the curse on ring of teleportation, "random" now or is it still just a sticky curse?

And, last but not least, an old and improved bug. When I try to fire things out of my quiver (playing on a lap-top) I can't use f0 but instead I have to use f*0, before this was only try for position 2, 4, 6.

I believe it does actually. I think it is giving you a clue as to how the damage is derived, which I believe is: 5 + CL

Just one game-play issue so far: f an early-mid level Mage (up to CL20, at least) is going to be very stuck against any monster that has RBase plus RPois. In previous versions, there was at least the Sisyphean approach of using MM on golems, etc, but there doesn't seem to be a non-elemental attack in the first three books. Which isn't inherently a Bad Thing but definitely stops Mages from being able to dive with the ease of other casters (e.g. Druids have Gravity Bolt, Priests have OoD, Necros have Dark Bolt, etc)...

Apart from that, it looks good - I like the flavour of some of the new egos and the racially-profiled mobs...

Correct. It is a (small) bug - it should just say 18.

This is deliberate. Mages get the best detection, device use and teleportation - the tradeoff is in less early spell damage. At CL20, though, you get the Best Spell Ever.

Yes, I had quite a lot of fun with egos. And instead of "Easterling Novice Mage" I should have had "Novice Mage of Easterling Appearance"

                            Character dumps fail

Psi has found that character dumps fail in WinCE, and I've tested and they fail in linux as well. So it looks like no dumps for now; I'll be getting this fixed and out as soon as possible.

You might think that, but my HE mage is CL29, has Mim down and is now at DL62 of Angband after 73k turns. I'd stick up a dump if it wasn't broken

Just avoid (or TA if you can) anything you can't kill and make the most of frost beam, thrust away, teleport other, telekenesis and stone to mud.

Well, it turns out the dumps are NOT broken - they just require an inversion of logic. When asked if you want to replace the existing file, answer no. It wiil then happily replace the file. If, on the other hand, you answer yes, you will be told "Character dump failed!". So there will be a bugfix out soon, but it's not quite as urgent as I thought.

                                Words fail me.
