If, on the other hand, you felt like tweaking the generation and seeing what happened, I'd certainly be interested to see alternatives.
Do you have a public repository of some kind? Or do you just prefer patches against the most recent release?

I'm not promising anything, but I'm currently working on generate.c in Vanilla so I've been thinking about it a lot recently. If I have any ideas I'll try to send you a patch.

Now back to my dwarven throwing champion!

There's currently no public repository, although I am working on that. For now, though, I'm very happy to accept patches, if you happen to write one.

Exactly 50%, in fact, and it's been there since at least 0.2.3, and probably 0.2.0. Does no-one go to Nan Dungortheb?

I see your Splinter IV did in 036 - wouldn't you have noticed it if it was crashing 50% of the time?!

It doesn't crash in Linux. I've seen this before; Windows (especially Vista) is much pickier about little things like, erm, overrunning the ends of arrays:

Windows: OMG! You can't do that! I'm crashing!
Linux: You want to do that - fine. Your funeral.

            Both have their drawbacks.

Windows is the better model -- it takes much longer to find the bug in linux, but eventually, you will.

I just installed it onto my laptop... I'm hoping to start playing Angband under valgrind and maybe catch some obscure bugs.

Actually "hope" might not be the right verb.

Yep, that's how I found this one.

The spell from the 2nd magebook sometimes doesn't work on hitting, but for stealing only - at least with a rouge, and in town:
I first stole from a merchant, and was teleported. Then I re-cast and hit several townspeople, but nothing happened. After recalling to wilderness, after hitting a Cloud Giant teleport worked .. ?!
No, I don't have a clue 'bout C, and I'm not starting my own variant.

It does nothing if the monster dies - is that the problem? It seems to be working for me.

That might have been the case with the townspeople ... will try again when I'm back in town & let you know if there's still a problem ...

One other thing I've noticed that I don't love (playing a class with improved throwing) is that even as a warrior well-balanced items pseudo as (average); then when you sell them the shopkeeper has a good laugh and they go on sale for about 40x their "average value."

It would be nice to either know items are well-balanced right away, or to have them pseudo as something else. Once one gets rods of perception it matters less, but in general I don't want to waste charges from a staff IDing everything.

Waaah! Just kidding. (Instant pseudo implemented, and they still complain!)

You really only have to ID spears and daggers, though it would be nice if at least the rogues and assassins, maybe warriors could ID a well-balanced item on sight. Since they usually come in groups, just sell one, then buy it back. What else are you going to do with all that gold.

                                Magic Throw

What the difference between the level 13 mage spell, magic throw, and just throwing an item. I assume that there is a better chance of hitting the target, but does that justify wasting 5 mana. I didn't notice any exceptional results when using it with a well balanced dagger.

PS... well-balanced, branded, daggers sell for way too much!
