How about making lava a "battlement" - doesn't obscure LOS, allows to shoot over it, but @ can't move into it (maybe fire immune @ can).
As for other things, I would prefer:
water - looks pretty, does nothing (it's just floor)
tree - looks pretty, does nothing (also floor (edit: or perhaps blocks LOS))
    glass - transparent wall

Previously, the lava would show up commensurate with what would be expected as a solid wall type symbol for lava.
Well, it was a solid wall so it looked like a solid wall, but now it's neither solid nor a wall

Any chance we'll get a target-able blink/phase door spell to take advantage of all this new variation in terrain?
That's already in the game, press Ctrl-A, then b

You know this is the most broken ability that's ever been implemented as a serious power in an Angband variant, right?

This misses the difference between hybrid view and solid view. Compare FAAngband where it works as expected and can be walked on (with fire damage unless immue). In hybrid view walls are "#" symbol, so lava looks same as wall, but red in hybrid view. It should look same as a wall in solid view, but red. Mixing the two views is incongruous.

          - 1 for me. I quite like the new terrain, ala FAAngband.

i'd also like to see webs.

            And your point?

My only win is a ToME 2 thaumaturgist who could spam an unresistable inertia spell and slow every monster in LOS to -50 speed. Overpowered isn't always a bad thing to everybody. But I'm not holding my breath for targeted tele.

That is way too powerful, especially in concert with asymmetric LOS, but even without it, a short range guaranteed escape totally breaks all game balance.

There won't be lakes of it all over the place, but rather small amounts in tactically interesting places. As for the making sense - I tend to think of it mostly as molten stuff from forges rather than volcanic lava.

I'm currently planning to take it fairly slowly with introducing any new terrain. I'm reasonably happy with passable rubble and lava as they currently are (although I'm interested to hear how other people find them playing). From FAangband experience I have a fair idea of how trees and water would go, but I do understand the "trees don't grow underground" point of view. So we'll see.

Wait, is Dimension Door not a thing any more? When did that happen? Can we nerf Priests next (take away Clairvoyance or Banish Evil or something, that stuff is ridiculous)?

Also, terrain, as a thing that the player is better at handling than the AI, makes the game easier. Either make it decorative, or make it screw players rather than monsters.

Nobody in Vanilla has ever had a targeted teleport spell. It's been strictly the domain of variants with, IIRC, ZAngband's Mindcrafters having the first and most broken version.

Hm, Oangband having it (for Mages and anyone who finds the Rod of Portals) must have gotten me confused. It doesn't break the game there, probably mostly because Oangband is a pretty evil game.

Only if we can make the Balrog of Moria always walk on a bridge surrounded by chasms.

IMO that should be an Ironman unique encounter required to generate an staircase at DL50.

You die, only to be reborn as an XL1 character who can perhaps defeat the balrog.
