To Calris or not to Calris...

So, I just got Calris for the first time. Thing is, I also happen to have Belthronding. Is Belthronding late-game quality, or am I going to have to rely on Calris for my disenchant resist at some point?

Of course, I could still drag it around for the wyrms, but, you know, I don't really find it that impressive, compared with the other awesome weps out there (used Ringil back in the day, hoping to find it again). I have recently come into the knowledge that a lot of folks think Calris is an important weapon, but other than resDis, I just don't see it. Any input?

I don't understand what your question is. The real question is: is Cal enough to kill Sauron and M, and the answer is yes, easily. Therefore is it endgame-quality. Yes, Ringil is nice, but it's not worth spinning your wheels for. Take Calris as a swap if you don't want to aggravate, clear some dragon pits for supplies like !Heal and ?Banishment, and go kill the bosses. Belthronding is the same deal. Is it the best? No, but it's enough to kill the bosses. Focusing on what gear you _want_ is a good way to get killed. Focus on what you need.

Don't underestimate the value of +5 con from your weapon slot. That's far more important for the endgame than rDis.

By that logic a shovel is endgame-quality as well

Only the Pick of Erebor, and only vs Sauron. I did say _easily_. Heck, it's not that hard to kill Morgoth with Sting. I did it once, and was about to do it a second time, except that I found Calris at the last moment. In any case, the point is: don't spend too much effort on "perfecting" your equipment once you are already fairly confident you can take down the final bosses. It's a good way to die to boredom, stupidity, or simple bad luck.

Calris is one hell of a badass weapon. You don't have to care about the rDis; +5 constitution and sheer damage are really, really good. Of course you have to worry about aggravation; depending on your character, this may be a hassle.

When I first found Calris I was a bit underwhelmed but then I actually tried it out and kept using it right up until I found Ringil. And if I hadn't found Ringil then I think I would have used it for the whole game.

Hmm, alright then. Right now I'm swinging a 3d8 lochaber axe of extra attacks (+1), and I'm getting 5 out of it, as opposed to Calris, which would be 4 5d4 hits. The +5 con is nice, I admit.

Maybe I didn't explain myself completely, though. Belthronding is a pretty awesome bow with rDis and +1 to speed, etc., and I was worried that the reason everybody thought Calris was so awesome was the rDis, which I don't think I need, due to the bow.

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but the topic applies to my current character. I have calris, (broken curse) and angrist. which is better? the benefits of +5 constitution or +4 speed?

I get two extra hits with angrist as well.

Calris is end-game quality, which also, in Calris' case means it is better in end-game than mid/early game. The Angrist is most likely better for you at the moment without knowing spesifics of your char, but based on that you get two extra hits with it. But don't throw Calris away ... once you have the str/dex and +speed for it, and finally if you get some other aggravate items, bingo.

Namely Palantir, Haradrim, Hammerhand and Umbar.

There are better weapons than Calris, but they are relatively rare and once you have a endgame-quality gear you don't throw it away. That +5 to CON and resist disenchantment can also be very useful as swap at some point of the game. For example Calris can be used to kill Ibun, Khim and Mim (...Saruman, Gorlim etc...) without fear of getting stuff disenchanted, even that your other weapon could do more damage.

More to the point, you can clear dragon pits with Calris and a Ring of Power, well before maxing your stats.

For fast divers, it's one of the weapons of choice for offing Morgoth.

This is the first time I have found calris without already owning ringil. so new stuff for me.

I'm currently in the process of enchanting the "to hit" stat for calris to usable levels.

Sound like RNG is playing tricks on you like it did to me when I started to play angband. I wondered that why everybody claims that Ringil is rare when I find it in every game, but after few thousand games it was pretty clear that I was just being lucky. Ringil is rather rare weapon. Calris not so rare weapon.

yes. ringil's unnatural abundance spoilt me in the very early days, back in 1992/3 but i stopped playing angband back then played again in roughly 2000. and picked it back up about a week ago. need to relearn a few things.

which reminds me: is there a thread with a bunch of regularly used acronyms and new words the uninitiated may need to know? eg "squelch" it;s been a long time and i've never seen that word before. also searched the faq and found no q's at all.
