That makes randart games in that sense a lot easier. Can't predict, so can't plan ahead either. Use whatever just feels right. Much easier.

Game is easy enough even without artifacts, so I don't actually need to plan ahead, but obsessive compulsive part of me does that anyway. I just can't settle on "good enough", it must be as perfect as it can possibly get. If it is worth doing, it is worth overdoing.

That is also reason why I don't participate on comps. I can't bear trimming my turns as much I know I could, it gets boring really fast. I could probably win in way below 500k turns if I really tried, but it would make really boring game.

Guess we obsess in different ways if you can say that so casually .

How often do you play with randarts?

Exactly, but I apply this to randart games too. (Can't help myself.) Obviously, I have no trouble tossing randarts which a subsets of others (or which just aren't very good at all, but once I get to the end game, I always end up spending way too much time optimizing gear.) I find that if I can choose it as a birth option, then I can live with the consequences of that choice, but if I can choose which way to play, then I often need to apply a lot of willpower to avoid tedious, but slightly more (locally) "optimal" play. Thing is, I've learned that "sub-optimal" play can actually be a lot more fun -- it's just that I cannot force myself to do it (unless it's a birth option). Example: no_selling. I guess I should probably try ironman. (That has the added advantage of being a lot more difficult as well.)
