    Mining Weapons

Does anyone ever use any of the better picks, mattocks, etc. for combat? I even found the Pick (?) of Erebor in my current run, and while it was pretty impressive, wasn't enough for me to use it.

I have sometimes used Erebor as a swap when its acid damage outweighed my principal weapon's damage against a specific foe and also for digging into vaults.

Randarts can sometimes roll a superior mining weapon. I once had one which was better than any normal weapon: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=13602

http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=16632 here is another example (might get invalid if updated).

Can't let this thread go by without mentioning Ditchdigger again.

           Heavily cursed.
           -3 tunneling.
           Slays demons.
           Branded with acid.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
           Drains experience. Induces random teleportation

Love the idea of a mattock with -3 tunnelling. It actually makes you WORSE at digging! Trying to role play that in my head...

Sadly that won't be an issue.

I have a priest winner that used the Pick of Erebor because he never found anything better. Very satisfying!

                      That's awesome!

I suppose if you go negative blows, every time you try to attack the opponent should get a free hit.

One of my more memorable wins beat up Morgoth with a pick. I didn't really feel like playing out the full endgame so when I reached the final levels I just went for it. I think I was only level 47 when I struck the killing blow.

                        Code:
                        a) the Pick of Arrama (1d3) (+14,+30) <+3> {immltng}
Dropped by a Bile Demon at 3300 feet (level 66).

                             +3 wisdom, constitution, tunneling, speed.
                             Slays orcs, trolls, giants.
                             *Slays* dragons, demons, undead.
                             Branded with weak venom.
                             Provides immunity to lightning.
                             Provides resistance to dark.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
                             Prevents paralysis.

When aimed, it drains up to 250 hit points of life from a target
                             creature.
Takes 401 to 492 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 93.3%

                             Combat info:
                             5.0 blows/round.
Average damage/round: 311.5 vs. creatures not resistant to poison,
322.5 vs. orcs, 322.5 vs. trolls, 322.5 vs. giants, 345 vs.
dragons, 345 vs. demons, 345 vs. undead, and 300.5 vs. others.
All those slays on a 1d3 weapon. I did have another weapon available that did a little more damage but was otherwise much less useful. I didn't bother checking to see what this randart was based on.

Hey, +30 damage is nothing to sneeze at. And yeah, you got all those slays precisely because they were pretty useless -- the game calculated a low power value for them and thus was happy to jam more on there when deciding what abilities to add.
