So I just finished cracking the luckiest vault I've ever seen in this game. I'm on DLV 56 and up until now had only found a couple of silly bad randarts. Well within this medium sized treasure vault I found 3 artifacts of use, there are 6 i'm leaving behind, i found 2 potios of Augmentation, oh and my first RoS +8. I just went from struggling and probably soon to die to Superhero soon to defeat all evil! This is also the earliest I've ever seen "Omens of death haunt this place". There were 6 or so OOD uniques I had to teleport away.. This game still surprises me sometimes. I love it

if you browse my equipment/inventory/home you will notice the crazy amount of shit i am still using from that vault! Look towards the bottom of my game history! look at everything from 2800'. I actually found both the arkenstone and the phial too. And I had just found the star a few levels before thatComment

"Damn it, the spoilers said that if I played dead, the Adventurer would leave me at 1 hp and go on about his business! Shenanigans!"
From a darkened corner, a frayed voice whispers, "Tell me about it." Farmer Maggot shuffles into view and sticks out his tongue.Comment

GV Huge Modified - 1st WHOA! and then OH Sh*t!
My clvl 47 hT Mage recalled to level 78, activated palantir, 'L'ooked around: GV, type Huge - Modified! Whoa! Then when he got closer and got look what was inside, it was moment of Oh Sh*t! Khamul, Fagwath, Witch-King, Maeglin, Pazuzu, Cantoras, Carcharoth, Gorthmog! After some though, I started to clear vault opposite end to Maeglin, by the time I had reached middle row, Maeglin had cleared all the walls on the opposite side. I used mana storm and rift to keep Maeglin in distance, teleporting him away few times to get chance to regain mana, and occasionally banishing summoned monsters. Before I finally took out Maeglin I cleared vault, loot was impressive, 13 artifacts, some were left behind. After Maeglin was gone, I though vault was ideal place to kill Carcharoth, limit his summonings. It was, barely. After that I decided not to push my luck and recalled to town.
Here is char dump.
Edited, been playing warrior so much that I wrote warrior instead of mage. So, my hT Mage found GVLast edited by donalde; April 15, 2013, 19:44.Comment

Mana storm is an impressive spell for a warrior to cast
Those modified gv's do seem to be extremely lucrative. I found one on my last rogue, had a similar list of uniques and probably an equal number of artifacts. More of them were trashed than kept, but it was fun nonetheless.Comment

This wouldn't normally constitute a 'moment of whoa', but I shall be whoa-ing when I finally receive a speed bonus.
Have just reached CL39/DL51, and so far I've found a +1 Elven Cloak of Stealth and a +1 randart weapon. My cruising speed is -2 (although I have haste self).
I'm still having to fill up a lantern, too.
I did see one great vault, but it was at around CL25/DL28, was relatively open, and Al-Pharazon amongst others was shouting coo-eee! from the other side of the wall. I waved back and went on my way. Not sure I'd attempt the same vault even now with a maximum speed of +8.
The lack of speed makes for an interesting game, but a frustrating one.Comment

Just had one on my current playthrough where my ranger picked up Holcolleth at lvl 6 from a Green Glutton Ghost. That is by far the earliest I've ever found an artifact, and that extra stealth bonus helped out quite a bit in the early game.
Sure glad I picked High Elf so I was able to see that ghost so early.Last edited by Raajaton; April 24, 2013, 15:16.Comment

Holcolleth's a nice find at that level; as well as the stealth it gives you the ability to carry some sellable items before dropped to a sub zero speed.
I now have BoS+3, so a very muted 'whoa'.
At pretty much the same time I found...
HTML Code:s) the Broad Axe of Tolaquen (5d6) (+9,+24) [+10] Dropped by a Lesser Balrog at 2700 feet (level 54). Slays trolls. *Slays* dragons, demons, undead. Branded with weak lightning. Provides resistance to cold. Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold. Blessed by the gods. Prevents paralysis. Grants the ability to see invisible things. When aimed, it creates a large frost ball with damage 200. Takes 106 to 130 turns to recharge. Your chance of success is 91.2% Combat info: 5.0 blows/round. Average damage/round: 405.5 vs. creatures not resistant to electricity, 501.5 vs. trolls, 694 vs. dragons, 694 vs. demons, 694 vs. undead, and 309 vs. others.

If Scud is playing a Mage and diving quickly (i.e. not maxing stats before continuing beyond 35) then he might be wearing fairly light gear and still be having weight/speed issues. For a while with my current character (High Elf Mage), I was wearing a Ro STR (+5) before I finished stat gain.Comment

Sadly it looks like speed was nerfed off of Holcolleth at some point. I see in the spoilers that the item claims to have 3 speed, however here it is from my character dump :
Code:h) the Cloak 'Holcolleth' [1,+8] <+3, +2> Dropped by a Green glutton ghost at 400 feet (level 8). +3 stealth. +2 intelligence, wisdom. Provides resistance to acid. Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold. When activated, it puts to sleep the monsters around you. Takes 121 turns to recharge at your current speed. Your chance of success is 97.8%

I'm rangering it, with a strength of 18/200. Not sure if I'm overweight when leaving town, but it's certainly close. I've got 48lbs of burnable books for starters.
Ah, I was looking at the 3.1.2 spoiler too. Still, it's a very nice 'starter cloak' for DL6!Comment

Remember, you don't need to be able to cast spells from these books; in the worst case, you can abort a dungeon dive to return to town and restock. I'd say you'd be fine with 3 copies of books 1 and 4 (if you can use Haste Self reliably, less otherwise), 1 of book 2 (who cares if you lose some bad attack spells and a Teleport Self that you can't even cast reliably?), and 2 of book 3 (since losing Identify can be annoying sometimes). That's still 30 pounds, but it's a lot less than 48!
You probably are carrying more ammo than you strictly need to, too. Or something else is taking up a lot of weight...Comment
