It's already the case for 3.4 (Shockbolt tiles are the default).

Unfortunately. Fortunately changing back to ascii isn't too hard.

I think having tiles on by default would definitely make the game more attractive to new players, as well as reduce the flood of "dood how do i turn on teh tilez" posts... well, OK, there's no such flood!

And seriously, isn't being accessible to newbies a far better goal than avoiding making veterans change one lousy option when installing the game?

False dichotomy. The proper way to handle this and other similar problems is to guide the user through setting up the interface the first time they run the game. Let the user make an informed decision instead of making it for them and then forcing them to seek out the appropriate menu option(s) to change it back if they don't like your default.

                I always use tiles ...

... but would love to see Vanilla or a variant to not throw at least one error in the list of tiles in the menu ;-)

I need a large map display so that I don't get surprised by offscreen breath. ASCII takes the least screen space per tile, so it allows the largest map display.
Unless game mechanics change so that the range from which monsters can take action is a lot smaller, the need for ASCII won't change.

I don't know exactly about V, but in my variant, when using the Win32 client and choosing ASCII/small font (5x8 or 6x10)/maximized window, you can get the full dungeon on the screen. This is a huge advantage over using a tileset which will display a very small area around the player...

Screens are pretty big these days and I wouldn't be surprised to fit the whole dungeon in a maximised ASCII window. For me, though, having message log, inventory, monster list/recall, etc. in terms is more important than seeing the whole map. I just need the visual/telepathy range to fit in the main window.

I see the potential for a new variant here... "Tactiband", one might call it... where all the radii of everything are reduced by half (or, equivalently, tiles are 20ft across instead of 10ft)!

I always thought Angband had ridiculously huge dungeon levels compared to other roguelikes - until the level size reduction in recent years, it was actually a challenge just to find the down stairs! (Perhaps that's why diving wasn't so popular until recently? )

This would be nice, but it's a lot of work. Anyone want to do it?

As far as tiles as default, as someone who does not play with tiles, I don't care. The decision is made with regard to new players, not already established players. My personal opinion on this is kind of useless. That being said, I don't know what the right answer is, the new player contingent is very hard to get opinions from!
