That reminds me - I think I've asked for permission to use your tiles in FAangband (and Beleriand) before, but could you confirm that? I'm planning to try to add them soon - and I think I have 64x64 support.

Please send future requests to my e-mail or PM me here in the forum, we are possibly provoking the anti-tile people when doing it in this thread, and I don't want to do that..

@NPP, Shockbolt's tiles are drawn as PNGs and have quite a bit of semi-transparent shading if I'm not mistaken. To convert them to BMP would require a moderate amount of clean up in addition to resizing. FYI, there is exactly one Shockbolt tile already in UT32.

For the poll to even be realistic, you need more than 17 people voting, how many thousand Angband players are there out there?

I think people who prefer ascii are more likely to look for an option for it.

What if you have no preferences when you find Angband? I believe whichever you use in your first few games tends to stick. I don't like to play Larn or Omega without Amiga version tiles. I first played Moria with a non-graphical monitor, so in Angband it will be ascii forever for me.

I think the demographics of this forum are screwed. Most posters are *band developers. A poll at some retrogaming site (for example) might be more meaningful.

                    This.

If it's a choice for removing ASCII, I'd vote 'pry my ASCII from my cold dead hands', but I completely agree with making tiles default, for ASCII players it's a minor effort to locate the option, and permanently turn tiles off.

I agree with you, I would never opt for removing ascii even though I never use ascii myself. It's already there, it doesn't hurt anyone and people enjoy playing in ascii mode.

The poll and discussion was started as an attempt to change default back from tiles, to ascii I think.

For me who's used to play my realtime variant, I always switch from tile mode to ASCII mode really frequently. So I really don't care about what is the default. Usually I play with 64x64 tiles when at home with my 24" monitor, 32x32 tiles when using a smaller monitor, and ASCII mode when doing something that requires a lot of concentration, like killing Morgoth. In that case, I want to know in the blink of an eye if he summoned a grave wight, a lich, a vrock and an ancient red dragon instead of a nightwalker, a black reaver, a pit fiend and a great hell wyrm...

Yes, I can see it would be a far more complicatd project than I initially thought. Fortunately, I now know I can just wait and see what Nick does and copy his work.

But back to the subject, I find tiles to be a more enjoyable playing experience. They just have the one serious drawback that you can't see as much of the dungeon, which can get a character killed in many situation.

I don't think I've ever even SEEN tiles.. always been an ASCII player.

Kind of a necessity if you want to sneak in some Angband at work. To the uninitiated, it doesn't immediately identify as a game....
