A Few Questions/Observations From an Old Player

    Hobbit paladin.

    Looking at the code, it will try to place the staircase on an adjacent space that does not contain an artifact or permanent wall. Any other objects will be destroyed.

      We could just invoke "push_item" on that square and move all the items to another square.

        Hobbit Paladin? I take it the race/class restrictions aren't actually enforced by the game? Might be entertaining to play a H-T Mage.

        On the Dunadan, when it says that constitution can't be reduced does that mean that the +1/-1 potions also won't reduce CON?

        Why not just tell the game to create the stairs on the nearest space that doesn't have items on in it? For example, you could even turn a rock wall into stairs (although this would have the side effect of possibly ruining an anti-summoning tunnel or letting a bunch of monsters through a wall).

        Going back to the H-T Warrior for a sec, IIRC once I maxed out my STR, DEX, and Level, I still couldn't get the full 6 attacks/round with a Mace of Disruption. Somewhat disappointing.

          Race/class restrictions were a stupid idea anyway; they've been gone for years. And yes, that means you can play a half-troll mage. Rather terrible at spellcasting until you hit stat gain of course, but on the flipside they have comparatively great survivability, and regeneration oddly enough means that they recover mana very quickly.

          I'm pretty sure that the +1/-1 potions bypass stat sustains.

            Oh, they do, I was just wondering if the "cannot be reduced" language was coded the same as "sustains" language. Trust me, I tried sustaining all my stats except for the one I was going to raise and I still lost a point.

              All that text means is that Dunadan have innate sustain-CON.

                It irks me too, because mages have no issue getting their 4 attacks with considerably lower dex too. If mages maxed out at 3,8 with that HEAVY weapon too, and needed same dex as warriors for their 5,8 attacks, Id be fine.

                  Back when we were discussing new blow calculations for fractional blows, the one I liked the best was one where every class used the same 4 blow formula and certain classes got level dependent extra blows. Rangers, rogues and paladins would get 0.1 extra blows every 5 levels and warriors would get 0.2 extra blows every 5 levels.

                    Speaking of Rogues (who are up next after the Dunadan Paladin who just found Taratol on L6 of the dungeon), I don't suppose they get a backstab bonus for first attacks on sleeping monsters?

                      Nope. But they're significantly stealthier than other classes (+5 base; closest after that is the ranger at +2, and every +3 is twice as stealthy), so they can do things like kill an entire group of orcs one at a time, which other classes generally can't manage. They're also about as good at melee as paladins, and third-best archers after rangers and warriors.

                        I don't recall, does RChaos provide PConf or PHallucination in 3.3.2?

                          No, it doesn't. However, if you have it, then chaos attacks will not cause confusion or hallucination. Similarly, if you have sound resistance then sound attacks won't stun you, but you can still be stunned from other sources.

                              Magic Mushroom Patch, Chaos Vortex (has chaos attack too), Silent Watcher, Will o' the Wisp.
