    Tendering my resignation

    Dear Angbanders of the world,

I've decided that it's time for me to give up the role of maintainer of Angband. When I took over the game (five years ago!) I had a lot of time, energy, and enthusiasm. My energies have slowly wanted over the years and it's time for me to move on. I leave the responsibility for where and how the game goes wholly in the hands of the community and the development team. I fully expect I'll come back to do some background hacking at some point (refactoring old code can be a bit like doing sodoku, logical and highly addictive). But for now, adieu.

I'd like to say thanks to all the people who've contributed to the game in the past five years, all the people who've put their energy and effort into tweaking - whether it's been arguing over mechanics on the forums or tens or thousands of lines of patches. Special thanks go to all the people who've been part of the development team over the years! It's been inspiring and rewarding to work with you all. Angband is a game that lives and dies with its community, and I'm sure both will be around for many years to come.

Thanks for having me! May you find Ringil soon.

    Yours sincerely,
    Andi Sidwell

Well done, and thanks. Being Angband maintainer is a tough gig, and you've handled it with grace and skill. Now go and have some fun.

You've done a lot of good things, thanks for your time and effort.

Let us all not forget - it's a volunteer gig, and people do it because they want to, not because they're conscripted to.

Angband is greater than any one contributor or maintainer. It's the examplar of a breed of games that no longer exists at this level of detail in the commercial spectrum. It will *always* have a place - even 50 years from now.

Being its maintainer is a responsibility more than a privilege. I think Takaria treated it as such, and I respect what he did over the years.

I think the pool of good candidates for maintainer is larger now than it ever has been in the past.

It appears in fact that it will be a "dev team" rather than a team led by a single maintainer. And that's probably a good thing.

Thanks for all the time and effort you've spent making it possible for the community to be involved. The Angband open source effort was especially important and should be seen as a model for how to get any legacy application licenses up to date. You will be missed.

Thank you for all your contributions over the years. There's a lot to be grateful for, but I'll just mention one thing. If you go back in the angband-dev irc logs you'll come across my first conversation where takkaria is patiently explaining to me through my thick-headedness how to get git up and running. If that conversation never happened, I may have given up on trying to contribute.
