Yes ofcourse, but he wasn't. We where both at 0 speed.

But Black Knights move quickly - which basically means at twice the speed of the player at speed 0. A monster's speed is one of the most important things to read from their description.

        doh.

        of course.

Anyway, it was a stupid death. I had numerous escape methods, and was cocky because I dealt a lot of damage compared to the monsters I met.

Well I feel that the subwindows should update before you hit space to clear the more.

          Example:

read a ?Treasure Detection, any termwindow that has list items, doesnt get updated before you hit space, even though you see all items appearing.

I think that hit messages should show the exact damage. That suggestion has been refused, or at least ignored, in the past. There were multiple design decisions to hide info from the player that I never understood. I recall when my suggestion that you should notice when your weapon burns your foe was considered radical, and I was surprised by the number of people who argued against it.

Attitudes have changed. ID-by-use seems pretty popular. Perhaps not updating the hp counter with each hit message is a bug now.
ID-by-use is a different issue: the changes to the ID minigame have been welcomed, yes - but that's not the same as giving people more tactical information. There have been many debates (often spearheaded by Timo) about providing *less* information and returning to a darker, scarier feel a la frog-knows/Moria. IMO the revelation of exact monster damage falls into this category: it's the opposite direction from the one the game is heading in.

If people want to know exact monster damage, they have two choices: play in wizard mode (which shows you exact damage every hit), or turn on full monster knowledge (which shows every monster's damage in monster recall). Or both.

I would prefer to see this information also, although its absence doesn't get me angry.

I might create a branch with an option called "show_hidden_numbers" or something, although I'm not sure it'd ever make it into V. I wonder how much it would change my game play.

You don't need to - the functionality is already in wizard mode. We already have a ticket to merge what are currently called "cheat options" into what is currently called "debug mode" - all we have to do is rename the result "info mode" or something non-pejorative and everybody will be happy (EDIT: we should merge both with "wizard" mode too). You can play in dark spooky mode or in info mode, and nobody minds a whit.

Wizard mode only seems to display my damage to the monster. Not his damage to me. Or did I miss an additional option again?

No, I just described it wrongly. Sorry. We'll need to add that to info mode when it gets sorted out. Maybe Jens will do it for 3.4 ;-)

Will info mode have individual toggles for each set of info? I like accumulating monster recall data myself, but information that is available with basic arithmetic like how much damage I just took I would like to explicitly see.

I've no idea, since I won't be coding it. Once someone steps up and says they're doing it, we get to lobby them to include what we want. I guess toggling stuff on and off means a whole set of "info mode options", but it's not impossible. Not sure if takkaria will welcome that much complexity though.
